Authoritarian envy?
Last updated on: April 15, 2015 at 7:28 pm By Gene Veith
The dictator of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew, died recently, to nearly universal praise in the West for the way he built his country into an economic powerhouse. Columnist Richard Cohen thinks that we have “authoritarian envy” because “too much democracy” keeps government from being able to do what it needs to do. Mr. Cohen, a liberal, decries Lee’s harsh rule and his running roughshod over any kind of human rights, but he seems to share that envy, expressing frustration over... Read more

Language as “Darwin’s problem”
Last updated on: April 15, 2015 at 7:23 pm By Gene Veith
Noam Chomsky is not a conservative Christian but is rather a leftwing radical. But in his day job, he is a pioneering linguist, having shown how all languages depend on “deep structures”–complex grammatical processes that are built into the human mind–that all languages have in common and that children can master almost without effort. He has teamed with a famous anthropologist, Ian Tattersall, and other scholars (Johan J. Bolhuis and Robert C. Berwick) to pose the question How Could Language... Read more

Why Marco Rubio goes to two churches
Last updated on: April 14, 2015 at 6:27 pm By Gene Veith
A piece on the religious beliefs of presidential candidate Marco Rubio says that he attends both a Baptist church with his family and also attends mass at the Roman Catholic church of his childhood. This is because he appreciates gospel preaching and also “craves” Holy Communion. He says, “I wondered why there couldn’t be a church that offered both a powerful, contemporary gospel message and the actual body and blood of Jesus.” There is such a thing, Marco Rubio! It’s... Readiness for 1st grade then and now
Last updated on: April 14, 2015 at 6:28 pm By Gene Veith
In a column on the cops busting the parents for letting their 10 and 6 year olds walk home from the park by themselves, columnist Petula Dvorak has a felicitous sentence: “Our rapid march toward police-state parenting has got to end.” But then she compares the checklists to see if your child is ready for 1st grade from today as compared to 1979. Death of a funny guy
Last updated on: April 14, 2015 at 6:30 pm By Gene Veith
Humorist Stan Freberg died last week at the age of 88. He pioneered the satire of pop culture, as well as the use of music, radio, television, and recordings to do so. He is also considered the father of funny advertising. He was the son and grandson of Baptist ministers. After the jump, excerpts from his obituary, including accounts of some of his funny bits. Why the percentage of the non-religious is declining
Last updated on: April 13, 2015 at 8:38 pm By Gene Veith
We blogged about the Pew study of global religious affiliation, which included the rather surprising fact that the percentage of “nones,” or people with no religion, is declining world-wide. An article at the Pew website explains why. (more…) Read more

“Free range” kids temporarily taken away from parents
Last updated on: April 14, 2015 at 8:46 am By Gene Veith
We blogged about the parents in Maryland who got in trouble for letting their six and ten year old children walk home by themselves. (See this and this.) It happened again, and this time the Child Protective Services took their kids, if only temporarily. CPS had found the parents guilty of child neglect, so this second offence could have serious consequences for the family. UPDATE: It’s even worse when we learn what the cops and the CPS put the... Now Marco Rubio enters the race
Last updated on: April 13, 2015 at 7:31 pm By Gene Veith
Marco Rubio announced his candidacy for president. That makes two Cuban-Americans (with Ted Cruz) and two Floridians (assuming Jeb Bush runs). He claims that he can attract Hispanics and other minorities, young people, and the less well off, bringing these important demographics into the Republican fold. Do you think he can? Do you think he would be a good president? How do you think he stacks up with the other candidates? (more…) Read more

The fastest growing religion
Last updated on: April 12, 2015 at 1:50 pm By Gene Veith
A new Pew study of trends in world religions says that Islam is the world’s fastest growing religion. Though Islam will come close, Christianity will still have the greatest numbers, with 40% living in sub-Saharan Africa. The number of atheists, agnostics, and the unaffiliated–though increasing in the United States–will dwindle worldwide. Details and more findings after the jump. (more…) Read more
