The ELCA Drops “And the Son” from the Nicene Creed

Last updated on: August 15, 2025 at 8:47 am   By Gene Veith

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has agreed to drop the "filioque" from the Nicene Creed in deference to Eastern Orthodoxy. Why not also agree with the Orthodox on women's ordination, homosexuality, abortion, and the rejection of liberal theology? [TO BE CLEAR: The ELCA did not drop the ARTICLE about the Son ("And in one Lord Jesus Christ. . . ."), but the phrase in the article on the Holy Spirit "who proceeds from the Father AND THE SON."] Read more

Re-enchantment or More Disenchantment?

Last updated on: August 6, 2025 at 10:21 am   By Gene Veith

With the rise of science over religion, "disenchantment" has become a hallmark of modernity.  People have become disenchanted with the family, with sexual morality, with the church, with life itself. But we are now getting disenchanted not with religion but with what we tried to replace it with.  That is a necessary stage of re-enchanting the world. Read more
