When we think of our advanced information technology, we immediately marvel at how advanced our science and engineering have become and how far we have progressed. But Marshall McLuhan argued that it really makes us more primitive. Some say this is a good thing. Read more

Prospects for War

What do you think are the prospects for war?  Not a limited "police action" in which the U.S. gets bogged down in a conflict with a lesser power, but a world war scale conflagration in which the U.S. is fighting for its very existence? Many European and Asian nations think one is coming. Read more

The Center of the Universe

Last updated on: December 3, 2025 at 8:31 am   By Gene Veith

According to today's cosmologists, one can say that the universe has no center, so that existence has no meaning; or, with equal validity, that every point is equally the center, so that existence is charged with meaning! What Dante and C. S. Lewis do with this paradox. Read more

Advent, Waiting, and the Virtue of Patience

Last updated on: November 23, 2025 at 8:53 pm   By Gene Veith

Advent is a season built around waiting. Today our culture demands immediacy and instant gratification. But human beings need to learn how to wait. This requires cultivating the virtue of patience. The liturgical year can help with that, as Advent teaches us to wait for the coming of Christ. Read more

Thanksgiving, Entitlement, & Grace

Last updated on: November 23, 2025 at 5:31 pm   By Gene Veith

The opposite of gratitude is entitlement. But thanksgiving involves a sense of grace. That connection is made explicit in the very language of the Bible.  The Greek word for thanksgiving is "eucharistia.".  This, in turn, comes from "eu," the word for "good," plus "charis," the word for "grace."  To be thankful is a response to a "good grace." Read more
