Tony and Lauren Dungy Reveal How to Have an “Uncommon Marriage” [BOOK GIVEAWAY] 2014-02-26T00:49:03-05:00 Nancy French

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

They’ve been married 31 years, and have seven kids.  Yes, seven.   After books about football and leadership, Tony Dungy is (finally!) revealing the secrets to a happy marriage.  (Oh and his wife Lauren has a say in it, too.)

The former Colts coach and his wife have co-authored a book with (my pal!) Nathan Whitaker about how to have an “Uncommon Marriage.”

On Tony’s blog, he was asked what got their marriage off to a good start.  He responded:

“If I had to name the number one thing that got our marriage off to a great start, it was finding the right church home. It provided a really solid foundation for us as a newlywed couple. At Bethany, we established the habit of spending time talking about God – and to God – together.

Wednesday night was Bible study night, and Pastor Farmer would have us read different Scripture passages and pray in small groups. It was great for us to see so many couples, like the Cephases, praying together. Through their example, we learned how a marriage becomes stronger when couples make praying and spiritual conversations a priority.”

A description of Uncommon Marriage from publisher Tyndale is below, followed by a Q&A with the Dungys.

What does it take to build a marriage that will last? Tony and Lauren Dungy have together known the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. They fell in love, built a family, and made sports history when Tony became the first African American head coach to win the Super Bowl. Yet they’ve also gone through difficult, relationship-testing setbacks, including job loss and devastating personal tragedy.

In a culture where it seems harder and harder to make marriage last, what has kept the Dungys strong through it all? In Uncommon Marriage, Tony and Lauren share the secrets that hold them together, revealing what they’ve learned so far about being a good husband or wife; getting through times of loss, grief, or change; staying connected despite busy schedules; supporting each other’s dreams and goals; and helping each other grow spiritually.
