Advent is Here–All Things are Become New

Last updated on: November 29, 2025 at 11:04 am   By Vance Morgan

I have said many times that Advent is my favorite liturgical season–this year it promises to be even more meaningful than usual. My new book, A Year of Faith and Philosophy, is themed to the liturgical year–althogh it was ready for publication last spring, the publisher chose to delay its release so that it would be available just before the new liturgical season begins–which is today! Groups of people in at least two local churches, Trinity Episcopal in Pawtuxet, RI... Read more

Celebrating Christmas Like a Real American

Last updated on: November 26, 2025 at 4:06 pm   By Vance Morgan

Today is Black Friday, the unfortunate beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Apparently in service to the holiday spirit of capitalism, some stores opened in yesterday’s evening hours, forcing their employees to interrupt their Thanksgivings in pursuit of increased sales. It is also the beginning of this year’s skirmish in the much-hyped “War on Christmas.” This is a “war” allegedly being waged by all sorts of non-Christians in this country, a war whose continuing battlefields include the apparent prohibition against... Read more

In Anticipation of Advent

Last updated on: November 20, 2025 at 10:40 am   By Vance Morgan

Today is The Reign of Christ Sunday (or Christ the King Sunday), the final Sunday of Ordinary Time. Advent begins a week from today. Since Advent is my favorite of all the liturgical seasons, here are some anticipatory reflections. In Philosophical Fragments, Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard tells a lovely story about a powerful king who falls in love with a lowly maiden. The maiden is unaware of the king’s love, and the king is worried. Knowing that love is built on... Read more

Are You a King?

Last updated on: November 20, 2025 at 10:59 am   By Vance Morgan

This coming Sunday is “Reign of Christ” Sunday, the final Sunday of Ordinary Time. The gospel options vary considerably, including the sheep and goats passage in Matthew 25, Jesus’s trial before Pilate in John 18, and the crucifixion in Luke 23. Taken together, they provide a range of responses to Pilate’s question, “Are you a king?” Perhaps the greatest confusion among those who heard and followed Jesus during his time on earth was directly related to Pilate’s question. For the... Read more

Ecclesiastes 3 begins by telling us that “for everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.” Those of a certain age remember the Byrds’ 1965 masterpiece “Turn! Turn! Turn!” that is a setting of Ecclesiastes 3:1-9, which tells us that there is a time for everything from “A time to be born, a time to die” to “a time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together”–as well as the Byrds’ addition: “a... Read more

The Wells of Salvation

Last updated on: November 12, 2025 at 3:10 pm   By Vance Morgan

Therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. Isaiah 12 The above passage from Isaiah is part of one of the lectionary options for this coming Sunday. In his collection of essays Breakfast at the Victory, James Carse writes about the spiritual lessons he learned when the water at his family’s rural New England cabin started tasting funny one summer. It turned out that the wooden cover over the cabin’s well had collapsed under the weight of a... Read more

One Wife for Seven Brothers

Last updated on: November 8, 2025 at 10:46 am   By Vance Morgan

It’s football season! Here’s a conversation overheard as a bunch of guys at a sports bar wait for the big game to begin: “Dude, I’ve got one for you. There are these seven brothers named Aaron, Bill, Carl, Dave, Eric, Fred and George. Aaron’s the oldest one and he marries his high school girlfriend Paula. But he dies and Bill marries Paula because he thinks it’s the right thing to do.” “That’s kind of weird. Is Paula hot?” “What does... Read more

Lift Up Your Hearts

At my book launch on campus last week, when responding to a question during Q and A, I used a visual that I have frequently used when describing my current way of thinking about Christianity conceived broadly. Imagine a large tent. Make it a three-ring circus tent, since inside the tent I am imagining things both entertaining and silly happen regularly. This gigantic tent is not for the entertainment of spectators, though; rather, it is a place for groups of... Read more

Warthogs and Saints: An All Saints Sunday Reflection

Last updated on: November 2, 2025 at 7:57 am   By Vance Morgan

Today is All Saints Sunday–the official All Saints Day was yesterday. What does it take to be a saint? In Wholehearted Faith, Rachel Held Evans’ final book that was published after her untimely death in 2019, this question and others such as Who is in and who is out? take center stage. Evans’ work resonates with me because her story is somewhat similar to mine, an emergence from Protestant fundamentalism toward what one of my students once described as “a... Read more

God is Non-Binary

I feel like being controversial today . . . Here’s a repeat from not long ago. My baseline criterion for whether a particular class has gone well is to answer the question “Did I learn something new today?” in the affirmative. By that standard I had a number of excellent classes in my Montaigne honors colloquium last semester. Michel de Montaigne frequently writes about how much hubris and pride it requires for mere human beings to claim anything with certainty... Read more
