“To my LGBTQ child, I am so sorry.” – Dad

burdenI am so sorry. And I am so thankful.

First, please let me say that it is an honor and a privilege to be your parent. I could not have asked for a better child.

I am so sorry for what I did and said that made you wonder if I love you, and I am sorry for what I failed to do and say to let you know how much I love you.

I am also sorry for the hurt and rejection and condemnation you have felt from some of our family members, those you considered to be friends, and from the church. Many tears have been shed as I thought about how much they hurt you.

I am thankful that through this journey you have come to understand so much more about unconditional love, and about God, Jesus and the very heart of his message. You have become more spiritual, more loving, more able to receive love, and you have deepened your relationship with God.

I am thankful that you have discovered that the truth of Jesus is very different from the teaching and message of much of today’s Christian church.

I am thankful that you have come to know the truth about God’s heart and love for you.

I am thankful for the love that many of your family, and your true friends – old and new – have shown you.

In the face of indefensible hate, rejection, shaming and condemnation, you stayed true to yourself and you allowed your heart to be set free!

Most of all, I am thankful for you. You are an amazing child. I would not change anything about you.

There is nothing you can ever do to disappoint me.

Ever.

I will always love you. I will always be your advocate and celebrate your life.

I will always be your biggest fan.

– Dad
