My Philosophy of Money

Last updated on: August 22, 2026 at 7:44 am   By Frank Viola

In Insurgence: Reclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom, I wrote a lot about money. In fact, some of what I said about money and possessions were among the most controversial statements in the book. Money tells a particular story, and there’s a spirit behind it. This is all unfolded in the book. The volume also provides practical experiments on how we can free ourselves from the spirit of Mammon. Jesus had a ton to say about money and wealth, most of... Read more

Needed: A Ministry Team

Last updated on: August 22, 2026 at 7:40 am   By Frank Viola

Over the years, I’ve shared my vision of a ministry dream team for the Insurgence. Led Zeppelin serves as an apt metaphor when it comes to the gifting and synergy of such a team. (Obviously, I don’t endorse Zep’s beliefs or lifestyle. I’m using them as an analogy.) In 2018, Rolling Stone Magazine detailed the history of how Zeppelin formed. Their first ever concert together was on September 7, 1968 – fifty years from the time of the article. The article... Read more

Straining at Gnats

“You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.” ~ Jesus in Matthew 23:24 Six months ago, a group of Christians from a certain denomination featured an article of mine to their readers. The article was 7 pages long, 2,862 words to be exact (but who’s counting?). The article was about being delivered from the world system and the incredible power of water baptism as understood by the first followers of Jesus. THAT was the topic. In... Read more

A Farewell to Prayer

Last updated on: August 10, 2026 at 7:36 am   By Frank Viola

Not too long ago, I read a book that argued that prayers of petition, supplication, and intercession are nothing more than “begging God to be good.” The author asserted that such prayers are a waste of time and energy because they assume God isn’t good unless we beg Him to do something nice in our lives or in the lives of others. (In other words, unless we pray.) The logic goes like this: God already knows what you, your friends, and... Read more

Will the Revolution Be Televised?

Welcome to another Thursday UNFILTERED blog post, the only blog that’s never jealous when you read other people’s lame blogs. The book (shown above) is one for our times. Sadly, scores of Christians are trying to weather a health crisis, a relational crisis, and/or a financial crisis. Hang On, Let Go is a practical field guide for how to survive the worst that life can throw at you, and even thrive through it. Now on to the subject at hand.... Read more

Another Relationship Killer – Judging Motives

Last updated on: August 7, 2026 at 5:43 pm   By Frank Viola

I have recently written on three relationship destroyers (of ANY relationship — romantic, friendship, familial, work-related, social media, etc.) The first is outcome dependence. (This one also applies to people who have lost their marbles because of an election outcome.) The second is offering unsolicited advice. The third is the dark side of being vulnerable. Today I want to talk about a fourth relationship killer. It’s also a sin that few Christians – including pastors and teachers – ever address. That sin is trying... Read more

Everybody’s an Expert Today and So Are You

Social media, in all of its brilliance, glory, fakery, and viciousness, has turned everyone into an expert. I never knew that Joe the carpenter is a high-level specialist in infectious diseases. Did you? Just look at his Facebook page. There’s no question that he’s an expert (at least in his own mind). Pamela the church secretary is an epidemiologist. Who knew? Just look at her Facebook live videos. She’s an expert on epidemics – or so she thinks. I was also surprised to find out that... Read more

The Two Species Of Lead Pastor (and Other Spiritual Leaders)

Last updated on: July 17, 2026 at 1:42 pm   By Frank Viola

***Surgeon General’s Warning: potentially offensive but true*** I spend a lot of my time training leaders: lead pastors, assistant pastors, youth pastors, Bible teachers, church planters, missionaries, the whole spiritual entrepreneur starter pack. And after years of doing this, I’ve noticed there are basically two species of Christian leader roaming the earth. *Species #1: The Majority*. These folks are chasing fame, platform, and a bigger offering plate (in that order). They’ll invest in anything that gets them closer to those... Read more

The Truth (and Lie) About Being Vulnerable

Last updated on: July 11, 2026 at 8:25 am   By Frank Viola

We live in a day where there’s a lot of high talk about the glories of being vulnerable. So much so that some people even boast about it. “Look at how awesome I am. I just got vulnerable. (Applause please. Back pats warranted too.) Of course, no one verbalizes that. But this prideful mindset is behind much of so-called “vulnerability” today. Vulnerability is a two-edged sword. It has a dark side that few talk about. Let me ‘splain. Being vulnerable... Read more

Spurgeon and the Church: New Bible

Last updated on: July 15, 2026 at 8:33 am   By Frank Viola

The NKJV Spurgeon and the Church: Acts through Revelation is a beautifully conceived devotional Bible that pairs the clarity of the New King James Version with the rich, time-tested pastoral wisdom of Charles Spurgeon. It is especially well-suited for believers who want their regular Scripture reading in Acts through Revelation to be accompanied by trustworthy, doctrinally sound reflection from one of church history’s most beloved preachers. This edition focuses on Acts, the Epistles, and Revelation, tracing the life and witness... Read more
