Finding God in the Bible

Film director Darren Wilson has just released a new book called Finding God in the Bible: What Crazy Prophets, Fickle Followers and Dangerous Outlaws Reveal about Friendship with God.

There is a surprising fact that most readers of the Bible don’t think about. That fact is this: Most of the people whom God used mightily in both Old and New Testaments did some pretty bad things in their lives.

David was a murder and an adulterer.

Moses was a killer.

Paul was a murderer.

Jacob was a swindler and manipulator.

Rahab was a harlot.

Peter committed hypocrisy and did the unthinkable. He betrayed his Lord three times in Jesus’ darkest hour.

Yet God chose to use all of these people — and others like them — to do amazing exploits for Him and advance His kingdom on earth.

In Darren’s Wilson’s new book, he takes us on a journey through the Bible with an eye to its various characters and highlights how imperfect — and sometimes weird — they were.

And yet he makes the point that God was their friend and He did wonderful things in and through their lives. This despite their mistakes, shortcomings, eccentricities and screw ups.

As far as the writing style goes, this is a very easy-to-read book. Darren uses hipster language and street verbiage. Young readers will especially enjoy it.

For instance, I think this is the first book where Moses is described as a “stud.”

So if you like ultra-casual reads, you’ll enjoy this book.

In short, Wilson’s book is a swift reading journey into the Bible, highlighting various characters and their weaknesses and then showing how God became their friend and used them anyway.

Hope for all people. Including Christians.

While reading the book, I was thinking this is a nice introduction to the Old Testament to people who aren’t familiar with it. Especially Millennials.

Darren Wilson is the founder of Wanderlust Productions. He has an MFA in screenwriting from Regent University. Wilson is currently the artist-in-residence at Judson University, and he speaks at churches and conferences with increasing regularity. He is the director of the feature films Finger of God, Furious Love, and the newly released Father of Lights and The Greatest Flight.
