This is not the first time Bono had something to say about foreign politics. (See the video below.) What’s an Irish man doing telling Americans how to vote?

Answer: He’s answering the crazed British racist who came over here to campaign for Trump’s white supremacists when Trump appeared alongside Nigel Farage, of the U.K. Independence Party, who helped lead the Leave campaign in the recent Brexit referendum on whether Britain should stay in the European Union.

On Twitter, Trump said, “They will soon be calling me MR. BREXIT!”

Farage appealed to racism and xenophobia in the UK and here, the same spirit that led the English to dominate, murder and at times commit genocide against the Irish (all this as a “Christian country.” Farage (like Trump) made immigration his central issue. UKIP’s message that immigrants are to blame for many of the UK’s ills and led directly to several race-baiting killings recently.

As an article in the New Yorker noted, “Farage took a shot at President Obama, who had visited London in April and warned that a Leave vote could imperil Britain’s ability to make future trade deals with the United States. ‘And he talked down to us. He treated us as if we were nothing,’ Farage said, twisting the President’s words almost beyond recognition. Then he delivered his coup de grâce. ‘Having criticized and condemned his”—Obama’s—’behavior, I could not possibly tell you how you should vote in this election,’ he said. ‘But I will say this: if I was an American citizen, I wouldn’t vote for Hillary Clinton if you paid me.” To loud cheers, Farage went on, ‘In fact, I wouldn’t vote for Hillary Clinton if she paid me.’

Farage’s visit reminded us that “USA! USA!”-type nationalism isn’t confined to America. Nor is the race hatred that led the English to go into Irish villages and behead children putting their heads on pikes to keep the Irish down and scared centuries ago.

Something bigger than Donald Trump and Nigel Farage is going on. They’re trying to cash in on it. What’s going on is a worldwide Putin-to-Turkey turn to fascism. We are in the fight of our lives. In the Trump/Farage world we’ll turn the clock back to the worst moments in human history.
