Today’s religious world (Christian/Islamic/Jewish/Hindu-nationalist et al) thrives on private “facts.” Were you home “schooled?” Do you think Donald Trump is smart? Did you go to a Christian “college” or other type of Madrasa? Are you the the type of Jew or Muslim who feels God “gave” you the so-called Holy Land? Do you believe that George W. Bush was a good president or that it’s wrong to sit next to a woman on a plane? Do you believe in a literal heaven or hell or that God wants you to cut off your kid’s foreskin or send him to Liberty University or blow up a plane for the glorious caliphate, or that Israel should remain a Jewish STATE or that India must “belong” only to Hindus and/or that the State of Indiana belongs to white Christians? Do you believe that women should’t drive cars or have the right lead a nation or the right to terminate a pregnancy or teach at Bob Jones U or have sex before marriage?

Do you think that

your belief system has the corner market on “Truth” (“with a capitol ‘T’)?
only you know “God,” and your interpretation of the Bible/sacred texts/Koran are “His” words?
“He” only speaks to us or our leaders
“His” words are infallible and complete, except…
God speaks to you within your group … even when Debbie Dipshit (or Mullah so-and-so) from the worship team feels “God” is “giving him/her a “Word” or “vision” about your life and you’d better listen to it because she has the “Anointing” all over her from just “bathing in His presence”…
God therefore reveals His plans for world to you, say to establish a caliphate in Syria or to go to Gordon College, instead of to a real school, thus providing special information only YOU have and lending itself to conspiratorial belief that you are a VICTIM of LARGE SECRET FORCES out to take the world away from TRUE BELIEVERS like YOU!

( NOTE: these “do you think that…” bullet points above were inspired by someone I’ll call ‘B’ who asked that I not identify her because she has not yet “come out” to her fundamentalist parents to tell them that she’s no longer a believer…)
