The first months of the year and the last weeks of summer are the slowest moviegoing times of the year. Not coincidentally, perhaps, those are also the two times of year when a lot of the smaller, independent “faith-based” films tend to come out, since they don’t have to worry about blockbusters crowding them out of the multiplex.

This year is no exception. In the last few weeks, I have received a lot of press releases and watched several trailers for “faith-based” films that are coming out between August and October, so I figured I’d round ’em all up in order of their release dates.

Note: this list does not include big-studio films like Ben-Hur (August 19) or Queen of Katwe (September 23) that have major “faith-based” elements but are essentially mainstream, made with bigger budgets and aimed at broader audiences.

This info is up-to-date as far as I know, but the release dates are subject to change.

–

August 12 — The Fight Within

In which a mixed martial artist leaves that world behind, falls in love with a Christian woman, and is drawn back into the world of cage fights by an old nemesis.

–

August 26 — Greater

The true story of Brandon Burlsworth, who is regarded as the greatest walk-on (i.e., non-scholarship player) in the history of college football, and the brother who struggled to hold on to his faith after Burlsworth died in a car accident.

–

August 26 — Remember the Goal

In which a female cross-country coach challenges the students at an all-girls private Christian school to win their first-ever state title.

–

September 16 — Hillsong: Let Hope Rise

This concert movie, which was originally going to come out in April 2015 via Warner Brothers, is now coming out via Pure Flix (the studio behind God’s Not Dead).

–

September 20 (one night only) — To Joey, with Love

In which husband-and-wife bluegrass duo Joey+Rory experience the birth of their daughter Indiana, who has Down Syndrome, and Joey’s struggle with cancer.

–

September 28 (one night only) — Vanished: Left Behind: The Next Generation

In which we see the Rapture from the perspective of some teenagers. Based on Left Behind: The Kids, a spin-off of the Left Behind series of novels.

–

October 7 — Voiceless

In which an abortion clinic moves in across the street from a church (and, to judge from the footage, almost all the light gets drained out of the world).

–

October 21 — I’m Not Ashamed

The true story of Rachel Scott, the Christian young woman who was the first student to be killed during the Columbine High School massacre in April 1999.

–

I think that covers it. If I missed any, let me know and I’ll add them to the list.
