Besides our national anthem, one of the country\u2019s most popular patriotic songs is \u201cAmerica the Beautiful.\u201d Its lyrics evoke the majesty and beauty of this country\u2019s physical attributes. But what led to the penning of the song\u2019s stirring words? A fitting way to celebrate the 4th<\/sup> of July holiday is to learn the story behind the inspiring lyrics of \u201cAmerica the Beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Evolution Of The Song<\/strong><\/h3>\n The song \u201cAmerica the Beautiful\u201d is a collaborative work. Katharine Lee Bates penned a poem<\/a> whose words became its lyrics.\u00a0Several years later, the words were paired with the musical piece \u201cMaterna,\u201d composed by Samuel A. Ward<\/a>, a church organist and choirmaster<\/a> at an Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey.<\/p>\n Bates wrote her poem, originally entitled \u201cPikes Peak<\/a>,\u201d\u00a0in 1893<\/a>.\u00a0However, its publication did not occur until 1895. The poem first appeared in the July Fourth edition of a church newspaper<\/a>, The Congregationalist<\/em>,<\/p>\n In 1904, Bates revised her poem to add some of the song\u2019s best-known words<\/a>\u2014\u201dAnd crown thy good with brotherhood \/ From sea to shining sea.\u201d\u00a0Bates\u2019 words and Ward\u2019s music were combined in 1910 to produce what Americans know as \u201cAmerica the Beautiful.\u201d Ward did not compose the music for this purpose<\/a> though, having produced the tune to accompany a poem, \u201cMaterna\u201d written by Scottish minister and theologian<\/a> David Dickson.<\/p>\n Patriotic Singing<\/strong><\/h3>\n The words of \u201cAmerica the Beautiful\u201d endeared the song to the country\u2019s citizens. Not only did they view it as patriotic, but it was also seen as somewhat of a national hymn<\/a>.<\/p>\n American troops left the trenches to sing \u201cAmerica the Beautiful\u201d at the end of World War I [Image by WikiImages from Pixabay]<\/figcaption><\/figure>One of the most touching renditions of \u201cAmerica the Beautiful\u201d occurred spontaneously by American soldiers in France at the end of World War I. When the armistice took effect at 11:00 am on November 11, 1918, some soldiers from New England called the Yankee Division occupied trenches in France<\/a>. Enveloped by the quiet of peace, they stepped into the open and burst into song<\/a>\u2014\u201cAmerica the Beautiful.\u201d\nPerforming The Song<\/strong><\/h3>\n**** Because of its popularity, numerous singers have recorded \u201cAmerica the Beautiful.\u201d Ray Charles provided perhaps the most famous and beloved of these. The song appeared on his 1972 album \u201cA Message To The People.\u201d Charles later appeared and performed it at the 1984 Republican National Convention. Those in the audience included Ronald Reagan and George Bush, Sr. Listening to his soulful performance<\/a> offers clear evidence of the superb job he does with this patriotic number. \u00a0Ultimately, Charles\u2019 recording made it to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2005.<\/p>\n The song is commonly performed or played at numerous public events, including sporting events such as the pre-game for Super Bowl and for New Year\u2019s Eve in Times Square. Political events also incorporate it. For example, singer\/actress Jennifer Lopez sang<\/a> \u201cAmerica the Beautiful\u201d during Joe Biden\u2019s presidential inauguration.<\/p>\n Katharine Lee Bates [Image courtesy Wikimedia Commons]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nWoman Behind The Words<\/strong><\/h3>\n Katharine Lee Bates, the woman who penned the touching words to \u201cAmerica the Beautiful,\u201d hailed from New England. She was born in Falmouth<\/a>, Massachusetts to the town\u2019s Congregationalist minister. Tragically, he died just a few short weeks after her birth<\/a>, leaving a tough life ahead for his daughter.<\/p>\n Despite this difficult beginning, Katherine Bates flourished, becoming a professor of English literature at Wellesley<\/a> College. In addition to teaching, Bates wrote extensively<\/a>, producing poetry, travel books, textbooks, and even children\u2019s stories. Many of her books and articles focused on social reform, and she became a noted speaker<\/a> on the topic.\u00a0Bates enthusiastically supported the emerging global peace movement<\/a> following the end of World War I.<\/p>\n Inspiration Out West<\/strong><\/h3>\n In 1893, Bates agreed to teach a summer course on Chaucer<\/a> at Colorado College in Colorado Springs<\/a>. While traveling to Colorado for this summer position, Bates attended the impressive 1893 Chicago World\u2019s Fair<\/a> which highlighted industrial progress and resulting wealth.<\/p>\n At the end of the college\u2019s summer term, Bates and several other professors decided to celebrate<\/a> by embarking on an adventure to Pike\u2019s Peak. But getting to the top of the mountain turned into a real expedition as the brand-new railway to the peak was broken<\/a>. Undaunted, the group turned to prairie wagons and then mules for the ascent.<\/p>\n On The Mountain<\/strong><\/h3>\n The breathtaking views from Pike\u2019s Peak put Bates in awe and inspired her to pen a poem about America\u2019s beauty. The \u201cpurple mountain majesties\u201d to which \u201cAmerica the Beautiful\u201d refers is the shade of Pike\u2019s Peak<\/a> her eyes beheld.<\/p>\n Discussing her experience on the mountain later, Bates wrote<\/a>: \u201cAll the wonder of America seemed displayed there.\u201d\u00a0To her, the view from the peak seemed \u201cone ecstatic gaze.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Gorgeous view from Pike\u2019s Peak [Image by Alice H. She said, \u201c\u2026It was then and there<\/a>, as I was looking out over the sea-like expanse of fertile country spreading away so far under those ample skies, that the opening lines of the hymn floated into my mind.\u201d Her use of the words, \u201cthine alabaster cities gleam\u201d in a later verse of the poem came from her experience Chicago and its World Fair<\/a>.\u00a0Bates\u2019 inspiration fueled her to finish the poem before she departed<\/a> from Colorado Springs that summer.\nSource Of Inspiration<\/strong><\/h3>\n************* ** Learning the story behind the inspiring lyrics of \u201cAmerica the Beautiful\u201d provides a better perspective of the cherished song.
