Number Of World Religions?

The Earth is a big place, so what’s the number of world religions found in it? A recent directive by the US Secretary of Defense brought that question to the forefront. As a result, the Department of Defense reduced the number of recognized religious faiths by 180. That number, however, pales in comparison to the actual number of religions in the world, an estimated 4,000 plus.

What’s A Religion?
It makes sense to determine what a religion is before attempting to count the number of world religions. At its essence, a religion entails a specific belief system about a deity or deities. Followers of a religion express their beliefs through conduct as well as worship, including rituals. These beliefs also shape a believer’s ethics.
Most people around the world say they belong to a religion. In fact, research conducted by the Pew Research Center found that some 85% of the world’s population identifies with a religious group. But, based on the definition above, does atheism constitutes a religion which must be counted? Since atheism connotes a lack of belief in the existence of deities, the literal answer must be no. In fact, the US Supreme Court decisions avoid defining religion and have never declared atheism a religion. Nevertheless, the high court consistently holds that the Constitutions protects lack of belief just as it does belief.

World’s Most Recognized Religions
Regardless of the precise number of world religions, the vast majority of those faiths fall within a handful of major religious groups. The most widely recognized world religions are Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Judaism.
The world’s population sits at over 8 billion. Christianity claims more than 2.4 billion followers, representing nearly a third of people on Earth. The label of Christianity for this purpose includes several denominations, such as Roman Catholics, Protestants, the Eastern Orthodox, Anglicans, and other smaller Christian group. As of 2026, Islam represents the second largest religious group globally, with just under one-fourth of the world’s population. Hinduism comes is third with just over 1.07 billion followers, 13%-14% of the global population.

Department of Defense Reviews Number of World Religions
A US Department of Defense review of and revision to its number of world religions recognized last occurred in March 2017. Pete Hegseth, the Secretary of Defense ordered that action be taken earlier this year to streamline the large list with which military chaplains work. Since the chaplains’ mission is to provide spiritual care to all military members regardless of faith, having a working knowledge of which religions may arise in their work seems reasonable. The work undertaken resulted in the recognized number of faiths droppping from 221 to 31, a decline of 180. By comparison, the Veterans Administration recognizes 220 belief systems.
Agnosticism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Muslims, Judaism, Sikhism, and Christianity (including a wide range of denominations such as Baptists, Catholics, Lutherans, and Methodists) remain on the recognized list. Various Wiccans, Unitarian Universalists, Druids, Pagans, Atheists, etc. have been removed from recognition. These changes must take effect with sixty days of the May 20, 2026 by a defense undersecretary announcing the reduction in religions recognized.

So Why Such A High Number of World Religions Estimated?
If the US military only recognizes 31 faiths and the VA recognizes 220, how can the number of world religions exceed 4,000? The 2021 World Religion Database documented 4,200 distinct religions worldwide, and many of them are small groups. For example, that Database counted over 300 Native American religions. And that’s just the US. Consider the huge number of folk religions which exist including African traditional religions, Chinese folk religions, and Australian aboriginal religions. And do those counting even agree on the definition of a religion?
Settling on an exact number of world religions seems unlikely given the size of the world and the billions of people living in it, not to mention the broad definition of religion. Even those who have taken an academic approach to the question reach different numbers ranging from over 4,000 to over 4,200. Perhaps focusing on the number, though, isn’t the important thing. Being respectful of someone who says what they believe is a religion is more important. The US military can’t prepare to counsel everyone, but if the task is beyond the chaplaincy corps, then an good faith effort should be made to get a military member the spiritual counsel they need from outside resources. People trump numbers.
