Why We Need Rest: More Than the Work We Do

Last updated on: April 9, 2014 at 6:14 am   By Linda Kardamis

This is a guest post by Dr. Dan Boone, the president of Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee. He is the author of several books, including the forthcoming release, The Way We Work: How Faith Makes a Difference on the Job (BEACON HILL Press). Read more at his blog, www.danboone.me. Everybody I know is tired. You are tired. I am tired. Your work wears on you. In addition to the work, you battle the monotony of doing the same things repeatedly. Laundry breeds... Read more

Hobby Lobby Chooses to See: Faces Supreme Court

Last updated on: March 25, 2014 at 6:01 am   By Bill Blankschaen

The US Supreme Court will begin hearing oral arguments today as the Green family continues its courageous stand against abortion-funding mandates in Obamacare. For those unfamiliar with the case, the (allegedly) Affordable Health Care Act requires employers to provide health insurance that includes funding for “morning after” pills. The Green family, and countless others, consider such pills to be abortion-inducing drugs. In effect then, they believe the law requires  them to pay for employees to kill their unborn children. They... Read more

Mission Drift: The New Book about Solving the Old Crisis

Last updated on: February 28, 2014 at 8:33 am   By Bill Blankschaen

Mission drift is inevitable. Your church, your non-profit, your business, your family — even you as an individual can’t avoid it. Drift happens. Such is the conclusion reached by Peter Greer and Chris Horst of HOPE International in their new book Mission Drift: The Unspoken Crisis Facing Leaders, Charities, and Churches, published by Bethany House Publishers. But rather than simply diagnose the illness as inevitable and declare your organization’s case to be terminal, the two veteran non-profit leaders offer tangible solutions,... Read more

What Is Faith? [Insert Your Answer Here]

Last updated on: February 18, 2014 at 5:34 am   By Bill Blankschaen

What is faith? We Christians talk a lot about it, especially as it concerns our salvation. Truth be told, we like to leave it there at the point of conversion, confined in the Salvation Box we’ve created for it. And yet we’re called to walk by it, to live “from faith to faith”, and to ensure our faith is evident to all. But it would seem to me to be difficult at best, impossible at worst, to engage something we... Read more

The Great Atlanta Snow Storm: Who Is to Blame?

Last updated on: January 30, 2014 at 7:34 am   By Bill Blankschaen

Sometimes stuff happens. Circumstances collide unexpectedly. Snow falls further north than the computer models predicted. Events reminds us that we are not in control. And we don’t like it. Not one bit. The great Atlanta snow storm of 2014 reminds us that some things are outside of our control. As a recent transplant to Atlanta area from the snow belt of Cleveland, Ohio, I’m used to getting around in snow, unlike most of the people in Atlanta. Snow only arrives... Read more

The Happiest Life: Hugh Hewitt Reveals the Secret to Genuine Success

Last updated on: January 25, 2014 at 12:46 pm   By Bill Blankschaen

When Hugh Hewitt first mentioned to me that he was planning to write a book on generosity,  I was not surprised. I had already begun to know him as a model for living the generous life. So it made sense when I learned the title of his new book would be The Happiest Life: Seven Gifts, Seven Givers, and the Secret to Genuine Success. Hugh is one of those rare individuals who diligently endeavors to – and succeeds at – living... Read more

40 Churches in 40 Weeks: New Film Project Seeks Answers

Last updated on: January 20, 2014 at 5:39 am   By Bill Blankschaen

Today I am privileged to feature a guest post from my friend Sharon Bollum, who is heading up an innovative project called 40 Churches in 40 Weeks TM. Like me, she has concerns about the state of the body of Christ in America and is committed to asking the questions many seem afraid to ask. Check out 40 Churches in 40 Weeks TM and follow their quest on Facebook or Twitter. When I tell people that we are traveling across the U.S. filming... Read more

Why My Children Wear Blindfolds in Your Church

Last updated on: March 31, 2014 at 5:08 am   By Bill Blankschaen

The following letter was, to the best of my recollection, sent in anonymously after allegedly being discovered in crumpled pieces behind a church dumpster. Given the magnitude of the problem of immodesty in the church today and the dire straits of this man whose children wear blindfolds in church, I thought it worth sharing here in it’s entirety without edits. If you have seen any churches that fit his description, please leave a comment with a click here so the... Read more

Why God Is Not A Nice God

Last updated on: January 7, 2014 at 8:07 am   By Bill Blankschaen

Privileged to feature a guest post from my friend P. Andrew Sandlin, founder and President of the Center for Cultural Leadership with whom I serve as Junior Scholar of Cultural Theology and Director of Development. God is not a nice God. There are many lessons we can learn from Samuel’s farewell address in I Samuel 12, but the most weighty lesson is  God’s faithfulness, not ours.  Our faithfulness is possible only because of God’s: “I … plead with you before... Read more
