A Heartbreaking Lack of Empathy

Last updated on: January 14, 2026 at 12:16 pm   By Melanie Springer Mock

Last week, I took several social media apps off my phone. I felt like I had to, because what I read there was breaking my heart. It wasn’t the posts themselves that caused despair. I’ve grown used to propaganda and spin that positions anything the Trump administration does as necessary, good, and right. And while current events, from bombing Venezuela to the horrors of nationwide ICE raids, are appalling, I didn’t erase social media sites because of that: I’m still... Read more

Shalom and the Problem of Fake Peace Prizes

Last updated on: December 10, 2025 at 7:08 pm   By Melanie Springer Mock

My dad died in October from dementia. He was a good man and a good father, and had lived a good, long life. For almost 50 years, he’d served as a minister in Mennonite and Methodist congregations, and it’s no accident that my favorite Bible verse was his, too, as he embodied the words of Micah 6:8, doing justice, loving mercy, and walking with humility. He was also a peacemaker, ardently advocating for nonviolence in the communities where he ministered,... Read more

For Epstein’s Victims, Language Matters

Last updated on: November 19, 2025 at 1:42 pm   By Melanie Springer Mock

The way we use language matters. A number of years ago, at our university’s faculty retreat, an engineering professor was sharing with a roomful of colleagues the challenges he was facing, getting the girls in his class to engage with the material. The men had no problem answering questions, but the girls were mostly silent, he said, and he wondered what he could do to get the girls more invested in their learning. Another faculty member raised her hand, then... Read more

Why Gen Z Feels Hopeless—and What Gives Them Hope

Last updated on: October 28, 2025 at 12:11 pm   By Melanie Springer Mock

Gen Z Needs Hope, And You Can Help Mentoring Gen Z Through Chaos and Corruption Some days, the weight of everything happening all at once feels overwhelming. A churn of bad news about our country’s seeming slide into autocracy is causing so much pain for people here and abroad, and it can seem like there’s nothing to save us from the impetuous acts of powerful people, doing bad things. Given this, we all need some hope, perhaps Gen Z most... Read more

The War Zone That Isn’t

Last updated on: October 5, 2025 at 4:17 pm   By Melanie Springer Mock

Portland, Oregon, is not a war zone. It isn’t war-ravaged. It hasn’t “burnt to the ground,” as President Donald Trump announced Sunday morning, just as he was preparing to deploy 300 California National Guard troops to the city, one day after a Trump-appointed judged denied his attempts to have Oregon National Guard soldiers mobilized to the city. While Trump was making proclamations this morning about Portland’s ravaged streets, I was running through the city, part of some 12,000 people who... Read more

Called to be Creators In the Midst of Destruction

Last updated on: September 7, 2025 at 6:16 pm   By Melanie Springer Mock

Some days, it feels like every part of our government is being destroyed, from the inside. A few long-standing federal programs, like USAID, have been dismantled completely. The Center for Disease Control saw the recent departure of numerous esteemed scientists and medical professionals, folks unwilling to participate in the outright destruction of the country’s public health infrastructure. The Department of Education is being torn down, brick by figurative brick, the unqualified Secretary of Education having been appointed to oversee its... Read more

‘We Live Here Together’: Immigration Matters

Last updated on: August 5, 2025 at 8:55 pm   By Melanie Springer Mock

Our small town festival, which happened last week, is one of Newberg’s best traditions, an opportunity to remember that we live here together: and that our neighbors need not be our enemies. Held every summer in the final weekend of July, the Old Fashioned Festival includes a parade, fireworks, a carnival, musical performances, and a craft fair.  This year, for me, Newberg’s festival also included a rebuke of the troubling anti-immigrant sentiment that is poisoning many communities, including my own.... Read more

Iranian Immigrants Face Anti-Christian Biases in the U.S.

Last updated on: July 21, 2025 at 1:28 pm   By Melanie Springer Mock

What do we talk about when we talk about anti-Christian biases in the United States? According to a February 2025 Executive Order, Christians in the U.S. are facing anti-Christian biases, including the “harassment” of “peaceful Christians” by government entities. The creation of a task force that month intends to eradicate “anti-Christian weaponization of government or unlawful conduct targeting Christians,” according to the Executive Order, protecting the freedom of Christians to worship without fear.  Four months later, Iranian Christians in the... Read more

To Glenda, Selling Alligator Alcatraz Merch on Etsy

Last updated on: July 6, 2025 at 4:03 pm   By Melanie Springer Mock

I saw your face all over social media the other day, Glenda from Florida, because you (and lots of others) were selling Alligator Alcatraz t-shirts through your Etsy shop. Your image appeared not because people were promoting your products, thankfully. Instead, someone had found your Etsy page, and the shirts, and then your social media profiles, then hounded you for the callous disregard your products showed toward other human beings. You were profiting off the pain and suffering of people... Read more

Words that Divide and Unify Us

Last updated on: June 22, 2025 at 8:55 pm   By Melanie Springer Mock

Over the past several weeks, I’ve given several public presentations about a topic I’m increasingly interested in exploring: the ways disinformation is used to dehumanize and divide people, and the imperative of Christians to be, in the words of George Fox, valiant for the truth. The venues in which I presented were fairly diverse: sharing at the Newberg City Club, a nonpartisan, nonsectarian community organization; preaching at Salem (Ore.) Mennonite Church; and then speaking on a panel at the Mennonite/s... Read more
