When the Disinformation Machine Comes to Your Hometown
Last updated on: October 6, 2026 at 11:53 am By Melanie Springer Mock
Seeking Truth in Local Election Lies The signs are everywhere that it’s election season in my small hometown. Campaign signs, of course, planted in yards and medians and empty lots, folded into Halloween tableaus, zip-tied to fences. By their signs you will know them, apparently, at least for a few months each fall. But it’s the other sign of election season that is far more troubling, at least in Newberg, Ore., where the disinformation machine has been turned up to... Read more

Christian Nationalism Finds the Campus Quad
Last updated on: August 31, 2026 at 11:31 am By Melanie Springer Mock
This past weekend kicked off another academic year at my university. I spent part of Friday in the campus quad, welcoming students to their new home. Welcome Weekend activities offer rich opportunities for people watching; these days, I mostly observe the parents, thinking about how their hearts must be breaking as they prepare to say goodbye. Having (relatively) recently launched my own sons into adulthood, I empathize with the parents’ potentially complicated feelings, their pride and fear in letting go.... Read more

Protecting Title IX’s Life-Giving Legislation
Last updated on: July 22, 2026 at 7:47 pm By Melanie Springer Mock
It’s not hyperbolic to say that Title IX, and the opportunities to play sports, saved my life. Continues to save me, I should say, as the practices I learned in high school and college sports have sustained me well into late middle-age, especially in terms of my mental health. I imagine millions of other women might say the same. And yet, a new paper by the far-right Heritage Foundation suggests women’s sports is only a tool of feminist engineering, carrying... Read more

Bible-Infused School Standards are not Christ-Like
Last updated on: June 30, 2026 at 5:03 pm By Melanie Springer Mock
Last week, the Texas Board of Education passed a required reading list for its five million K-12 students, becoming the first state nationwide that will mandate what the Houston Chronicle describes as “Bible-infused school standards.” The reading list, which includes “classic” literary texts alongside biblical passages, was passed 9-5 by the board, which also rewrote the state’s social studies curricula to include “biblical concepts and figures.” The rollout of this mandate will be staggered, starting with students in 2030. As... Read more

Are We Complicit in Others’ Suffering?
Last updated on: June 1, 2026 at 2:36 pm By Melanie Springer Mock
Your war is causing us to suffer, too. We were sitting with our tour guide, eating chicken tagine in a restaurant somewhere in the Atlas Mountains on day five of our Morocco journey. We’d already spent two weeks in Spain and Portugal: twenty college students, one faculty co-leader, and me, and now a tour guide from Marrakech had joined the group to teach us about his beautiful country. When conversation turned to the United States’ war with Iran and our... Read more

When Christian Nationalists Took Over Our School Board
Last updated on: May 12, 2026 at 4:05 pm By Melanie Springer Mock
Why a Local Election Gives Me Hope (And Book Announcement) Almost three years have passed since the May election in my hometown, which began to reverse the destructive course of our local school board. Through a series of events, including an election in 2021 and the resignation of progressive school board members, the Newberg-Dundee School Board had an alt-right majority who made numerous disastrous decisions, forcing educators to flee and decimating the district budget; crafting racist policies that made national... Commencement into a Hard World, But With Hope
Last updated on: April 19, 2026 at 8:04 pm By Melanie Springer Mock
We are weeks away from the hardest part about being a college professor: the commencement. Mixed with the excitement of a year’s end—and a summer’s reprieve from grading—is the realization that the young people you’ve learned to know and love are now stepping away from campus and into the world, beginning a life for which you’ve spent up to four years preparing them. I’m always happy for my students and eager to celebrate this accomplishment, but I’m also really sad.... Read more

For Mothers in Iran, Sending Their Kids to School
Last updated on: March 22, 2026 at 12:18 pm By Melanie Springer Mock
For the past three weeks, I’ve been thinking about mothers in Iran. In particular, I’ve been thinking about mothers in Minab, Iran, who sent their children to school on February 28, the first day of the Israel-United States war with Iran. According to intelligence analyses, the U.S. military allegedly triple-tapped the school, sending bombs that killed children, then returning twice more to kill those who were searching the school’s ruins for survivors. Initially, U.S. leadership refused to take responsibility for... Read more

Where “Boys Being Boys” Gets Us
Last updated on: February 24, 2026 at 9:14 pm By Melanie Springer Mock
I’ve spent the last 48 hours in a white-hot rage about an Olympic hockey game I didn’t watch. Or rather, I’m feeling rage about the game’s after-party, part of which I did watch, on repeat: a drunken hoard of entitled men, spilling beer with an entitled FBI director, and talking by phone with the nation’s entitled president, who can’t help but make a jab at women in a call meant to celebrate the men’s victory. But it’s the players’ laughter... Read more

A Vigil, a Memorial, and Creating Something Good
Last updated on: February 8, 2026 at 3:09 pm By Melanie Springer Mock
On a cold Sunday night two weeks ago, organizers in my small town hosted a vigil for recent victims of ICE violence, including Renee Good, Alex Pretti, and Keith Porter. Over 250 people showed up at what is essentially our town square: a slice of land between Highway 99’s south and northbound lanes, where a giant flagpole and even bigger flag welcomes visitors to downtown Newberg. That night, neighbors gathered to remember citizens who had been gunned down by the... Read more
