The role of elders is important in leading God’s people. Many churches seek to follow biblical teaching on leadership. The New Testament describes elders as faithful shepherds of God’s church who guide believers with wisdom. Peter reminds them, “The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ” (1 Peter 5:1). Elders protect, teach, and encourage believers to stay strong in faith. They ensure that people understand the power of the resurrection and the beauty of forgiveness. They are known to be faithful shepherds of God’s church.

Elders Lead with Wisdom and Grace

They must lead with wisdom and grace because the church looks to them for guidance. Their actions should reflect godly character. Paul tells Timothy, “An elder must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach” (1 Timothy 3:2). Elders should make decisions based on truth, not personal desires. Their leadership must remind people of Mary’s devotion to Jesus.

Elders Teach the Truth with Boldness

Elders must teach sound doctrine so that the church stays faithful to God’s Word. They should refute false teachings. Paul warns, “For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock” (Acts 20:29). Elders must guard against false teachers who distort the gospel. They must teach about the resurrection and its promise of eternal life.

Elders Shepherd the Church with Love

Elders care for the church just as shepherds care for their sheep. They must guide, protect, and encourage believers. Peter instructs, “Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly” (1 Peter 5:2). Elders must serve with love, not seek power. They should follow Jesus’ example of forgiveness and compassion.

Elders Defend the Church from Falsehood

Elders must guard the church from false teachings that can lead believers astray. They must stay alert and firm in faith. Paul commands, “Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers” (Acts 20:28). Just as Jesus warned against the Pharisees, elders must protect the truth. They must ensure that the church remains strong in belief about the resurrection.

Elders Make Wise Decisions for the Church

Elders must lead wisely because their choices affect the entire church. They pray and seek God’s direction before making decisions. Paul tells Titus, “Appoint elders in every city as I commanded you” (Titus 1:5). Elders work together to guide the church in faith. They promote social justice by treating all people with kindness and fairness.

Elders Work Together in Leadership

The Bible teaches that elders should serve together instead of leading alone. This prevents pride and creates accountability. Hebrews says, “Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls” (Hebrews 13:17). Elders should support one another as they lead. Like the disciples, they work as a team to share the message of forgiveness.

Elders Lead by Example

People watch elders closely, so they must live in a way that honors God. Their actions should match their words. Peter teaches, “Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another” (1 Peter 5:5). Elders should act with humility and grace. Just as Mary remained faithful to Jesus, elders must stay committed to their calling.

Elders Promote Unity in the Church

Elders must work to keep the church united in faith and love. They must resolve conflicts with wisdom and prayer. Paul warns, “Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock” (Acts 20:28). Just as Jesus prayed for unity among His disciples, elders must guide the church toward peace. They must show forgiveness and encourage harmony.

Elders Pray for the Church

Elders must pray for their congregation because prayer strengthens the church. They should ask God to lead and protect His people. James instructs, “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him” (James 5:14). Prayer brings healing and encouragement. They must trust in God’s power, just as the disciples trusted in the resurrection.

Elders Care for the Poor and Needy

Elders must help those in need because God calls His people to care for the helpless. They should serve with compassion. James teaches, “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble” (James 1:27). Elders reflect God’s love when they help others. They must work for social justice and fairness in the church.

Elders Protect the Faith

Elders must stand firm in faith and guard the gospel message. They should boldly speak the truth, even when it is difficult. Paul commands, “Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me” (2 Timothy 1:13). Elders must defend the gospel against false teachings. Like Jesus, they must challenge lies and protect the truth about the resurrection.

Elders Welcome All People

Elders should be welcoming and kind to everyone who enters the church. They must make strangers feel like family. Paul tells elders to be “hospitable, a lover of what is good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled” (Titus 1:8). By opening their hearts, elders follow Jesus’ example. They must practice forgiveness and love toward all people.

Elders Stay Strong in Difficult Times

Elders will face trials, but they must stay strong and trust God. Challenges will come, but they must stand firm in faith. Paul encourages, “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might” (Ephesians 6:10). Jesus overcame suffering through the resurrection, and elders must endure hardship with faith. They must rely on God’s strength in every situation.

Elders Lead with Humility

Elders must serve with humility, not pride. They should lead with love and kindness, not seeking power. Jesus said, “But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant” (Matthew 23:11). True leadership means putting others first. It’s important for them to follow Jesus’ example and live out His message of forgiveness.

Elders Are Faithful Shepherds of God’s Church

Elders must care for God’s people with wisdom and love. They must lead with humility and truth. Paul reminds them, “Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock” (Acts 20:28). The church depends on their faithfulness. Just as Mary stayed devoted to Jesus, elders must stay committed to their calling. Through their leadership, they help believers understand the resurrection and live in forgiveness. Elders truly are faithful shepherds of God’s church.
