Racist violence is swirling in the air this week, telling us to sit powerless in its presence. We must defy it.

In Minneapolis, a white police officer pinned his knee to the neck of George Floyd, a black man who died pleading for breath. A day earlier in Central Park, a white woman threatened a bird-watching black man by whipping out her phone and saying “I’m going to tell them there’s an African American man threatening my life,” because he dared to tell her that park regulations required her to put her dog on a leash.

One of hate’s dirtiest tricks is convincing us that we are powerless against it. But God is bigger than the bigotry that cost George Floyd his life. You are not alone in your outrage.

Please join me in demanding that the U.S. Department of Justice uphold its legal and moral duty to investigate the deaths of George Floyd in Minneapolis and Breonna Taylor, a black woman who was shot to death by police in her Louisville, Kentucky, home.

We must demand justice. I remain convinced that when we stand together, we can bring hatred to its knees and build a beloved community where bigotry has no home, and no one lives in fear of racist violence.

Today, let us say no more to silence. Let us act with the strength of our faith.
