Your Child Feels Like a Stranger? A Prayer for the Waiting 2026-07-11T09:36:54-05:00 Christine Moriarty Field
Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
Loneliness doesn’t show up in the Psalms by name, but I think David understood it anyway: the ache of watching someone you love turn their face away, little by little, and not knowing if or when they’ll turn back.
If your adult child has grown distant — fewer calls, shorter visits, a version of them that feels almost unfamiliar — you are living inside a very old kind of grief. And it is a grief worth bringing honestly before God, not managing quietly on your own.

Waiting Is Its Own Discipline
We talk a lot about patience as a virtue we’re supposed to feel calm about. But the waiting that comes with estrangement or distance from your own child doesn’t feel virtuous. It feels like standing at a door you can’t unlock, watching the handle from the other side.
Scripture doesn’t ask us to pretend that waiting is easy. It asks us to keep showing up faithfully inside it — the way the father in the parable of the prodigal son kept watching the road, kept his house ready, kept his heart soft, long before he had any evidence his son was coming home.
The Prayer Underneath the Silence
Lord, I don’t know what my child is carrying that has put this distance between us. I don’t know if it’s about me, about them, about something I can’t see. Help me hold this relationship open in my heart even when I have no proof it will be met. Keep me from hardening. Keep me from chasing in a way that pushes further away. Give me the wisdom to know the difference between patience and giving up.
Faithfulness Doesn’t Require Certainty
One of the hardest parts of this season is that faithfulness — staying warm, staying steady, staying available — doesn’t come with a guarantee. You can do everything right and still not know, today, whether your child will find their way back to closeness with you. That uncertainty is where a lot of us are tempted to either force the issue or quietly withdraw our love to protect ourselves.
Neither is required of us. What’s asked is steadiness: the kind that keeps the light on without keeping score.
A Practical Companion for the Waiting
Prayer holds the heart. But some of us also need practical language — a way to understand what’s happening and hold ourselves steady day to day, not just in our devotional time but in the actual moments when the phone doesn’t ring. That’s what When Adult Children Pull Away offers alongside your faith practice: a real framework for staying rooted while you wait on God’s timing for your child’s heart to soften.
You are not failing at faith because this is hard. You are living the very thing faith asks of us — hope held open, without proof, for as long as it takes.

Let’s Discuss: What would it look like this week to “keep the light on without keeping score”?
