A Mother’s Prayer in the Silence 2025-09-03T15:09:01-05:00 Christine Moriarty Field

There are few heartbreaks like the silence of a child who has walked away. The unanswered texts. The birthday that passes without a call. The empty chair at the holiday table.

For a mother of faith, that silence can feel like unanswered prayer.

You cry out: Lord, fix this. Heal this. Bring them back.

And when nothing changes, you wonder if God is listening.

But the Bible is full of stories of parents who wept over their children. Hannah cried for Samuel. The prodigal’s father waited on the road. Mary stood at the foot of the cross, watching her son suffer. God has always seen the tears of mothers. And He sees yours too.

Lament is Holy

We are quick to rush to hope, but lament is holy. You don’t need to pretend you’re fine. You don’t need to mask the ache with forced smiles. God welcomes your raw, unfiltered cries. The Psalms are full of them. Your grief is not weakness. It’s worship in its truest form — bringing your whole heart to Him.

Entrusting Your Child to God

At some point, you must place your child into God’s hands. Not because you’ve given up, but because you know you can’t carry what was never yours to carry. Entrusting your child doesn’t mean you stop loving them. It means you release the illusion that you can save them. Only God can.

Choosing Life Again

And here’s the invitation: even with a broken heart, you are called to live.  That promise wasn’t just for your child. It’s for you, too.

Full life may look different now. It may come in quiet mornings with coffee and scripture, in walks with friends, in laughter that surprises you after long sorrow. It may come slowly, tenderly. But it will come.

A Prayer for Mothers in Silence

“Lord, I place my child in Your hands. Heal what I cannot heal. Reach where I cannot reach. And Lord, heal me too. Teach me to live, to breathe, and to find joy again, even as I wait in hope.”

Your silence is not the end of the story. God is still writing. And He has not forgotten you.

Are you facing challenges with your children now?  You are not alone. These seems to be an epidemic of estrangement and difficulty. Care to share your story? You might lift someone else’s heart today.
