The AIG Bailout and the Egyptian Famine: Lessons from Genesis

Last updated on: May 9, 2013 at 6:06 am   By Faithful Democrats

I’m not a sensationalist by nature, or a prophet of doom.  I’m generally a hopeful and positive person.  But if we are looking for Answers In Genesis about what this AIG bailout might tell us today, it is to beware.  At what price-to our nation, to our poor, to our souls-do we continue to throw good money after bad? A Rant on Republicans, Spending, Hypocrisy, the Economy, and Fundamental Change

Last updated on: May 9, 2013 at 6:06 am   By Faithful Democrats

Recently, President Obama signed into law a new stimulus plan that is intended to jolt the economy, stabilize a volatile market, and rebuild the United State’s crumbling infrastructure.  Now, to be sure, there is a lot of uneasiness with developing an almost trillion dollar spending bill that is not associated with the federal government’s fiscal budget. Many Americans question the logic of spending our way out of an economic slump and paying for those who – neither may nor... Read more

Abortion, Of Course

Last updated on: May 9, 2013 at 6:06 am   By Faithful Democrats

Here’s my take on the issue. As a matter of policy, I’m something of a centrist: I think abortion should be legal only for the first three months or so of a pregnancy. I guess that makes me more or less pro-choice. But as a matter of law, Roe was wrongly decided. The Constitution, after all, has nothing to say on the matter. The issue should consequently be left to the states. (more…) Read more

Budgeting Compassion?

Last updated on: May 9, 2013 at 6:06 am   By Faithful Democrats

This week, I joined young people from all over the nation met in Sacramento, California to take action on a crisis.  Not the economic crisis, or the budget crisis, but a crisis of our nation’s children.  The Children’s Defense Fund, a nonprofit advocacy organization for children, gathered leaders from across the country to discuss a tragedy: the unacceptably high rates of incarceration of African American and Latino youth.   You might wonder.  What does this have to do with Christianity? ... Read more

Rising all tides while rescuing this sinking ship

Last updated on: May 9, 2013 at 6:06 am   By Faithful Democrats

For every dollar we spend, we take moral imperatives into account.  To do so, we must force the tough pragmatic answers by asking, “is this a wise use of our tax dollars?” while requiring ourselves to pursue compassion by asking “is this meant to help others or am I using this only to help myself and those like me?” as we call for framing the budget in a moral context. Scripture on the Budget: What the Bible Says About National Priorities

Last updated on: August 16, 2012 at 3:42 pm   By Eric Sapp

One aspect of the Democratic response to the upcoming Republican budget attacks must be a willingness by “faithful Democrats” to discuss budget and tax policies from a moral perspective and to challenge Republicans to apply the same moral codes to kitchen table issues that they so eagerly embrace on bedroom issues…because as soon as we start talking about budget and taxes, the Republicans will put away their Bibles and turn to Darwinian social and economic theories to support their policy... Read more

The Responsibility of the Nation and Its Government to “the Least of These”

Last updated on: August 16, 2012 at 3:42 pm   By Eric Sapp

Scripture sets a very high bar for public morality as well as for private behavior. Although we can easily rationalize why alternatives to the commands of Scripture might be more “sensible” and “realistic,” if people are going to insist on applying scripture to the bedroom, they must be willing to apply it to the boardroom as well. The Policy Implications of Praying, “Thy Kingdom Come…”

Last updated on: August 16, 2012 at 3:42 pm   By Eric Sapp

The Kingdom of God requires action by each of us, but it also requires action by all of us. It requires that Christians not only succor the least, last, and lost in our society but also that we truly claim our inheritance as God’s chosen people by boldly confronting the systemic bonds of injustice that keep so many of God’s children imprisoned in the darkness of hopelessness and fear. On Corruption and the Exploitation of Workers

Last updated on: August 16, 2012 at 3:42 pm   By Eric Sapp

Time and again the Bible makes clear that what God demands and takes pleasure in is not acts of piety and the scrupulous following of purity codes but our demonstrating His love through our actions and the policies we enact in government, business, and all other institutions. Special condemnation is always reserved for those in power (either government or business) who use that power for their personal gain instead of viewing their power through the lens of stewardship and service... Read more

The Sin of Helping the Rich at the Expense of the Poor

Last updated on: August 16, 2012 at 3:42 pm   By Eric Sapp

Democrats must not get into the business of throwing stones, but neither should we allow Republicans to continue to portray us as moral relativists. We must approach moral conversations with humility “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23), but we should not shy away from naming an action sinful when the Bible unambiguously declares it to be so. Nowhere is this biblical pronouncement clearer than on the issue of materialism and seeking material... Read more
