God’s invitation, provision, trust, and salvation are common themes in the readings for the Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time – image courtesy of Vecteezy.com.
The readings for the Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time give us a powerful image: God invites his people to a feast. Isaiah describes a great banquet that God prepares for all peoples. Psalm 23 presents God as both shepherd and generous host. Saint Paul teaches us to trust Christ in times of abundance and times of need. Finally, Jesus tells the parable of a king who invites people to his son’s wedding feast. Together, these readings reveal a simple truth: God provides, God invites, and God asks us to respond.
The invitation comes from God. But accepting that invitation requires more than hearing it. We must trust God and let faith shape how we live. Let’s take a look at the readings.
Gospel Text – Matthew 22:1-10
“Jesus again, in reply, spoke to the chief priests and elders of the people in parables, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come.
A second time he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those invited: “Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast.”‘ Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business. The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them.
The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.’ The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests.”
1st Reading – God Prepares a Feast of Salvation
Isaiah gives us one of Scripture’s great images of hope. The prophet describes the Lord preparing a rich feast for all peoples on his holy mountain. But God’s promise reaches far beyond food. Isaiah says God will destroy the veil covering the nations, destroy death, wipe away tears, and remove his people’s disgrace. The people respond with joy because the God they waited for has saved them.
The feast represents the salvation and abundant life that come from God—a victory banquet in Zion. The reading therefore gives suffering people a reason for hope: pain and death do not have the final word. God does. For Christians, this passage also prepares us to understand the banquet image that Jesus uses in Matthew’s Gospel.
Responsorial Psalm – God Is Our Shepherd and Generous Host
Psalm 23 changes the image but keeps the message of God’s care. First, God appears as a shepherd. He gives rest, restores the soul, leads along right paths, and remains close even in the darkest valley. Then the imagery shifts. God becomes a generous host who sets a table for his guest and provides abundantly.
Psalm 23 teaches us to trust God’s presence. Faith does not mean that we will never enter dark valleys. It means we do not enter them alone. The psalm portrays God’s loving care through two images: a shepherd caring for his flock and a host generously caring for a guest. That message offers comfort when life feels uncertain. God walks with us, guides us, and welcomes us to his table.
2nd Reading – Christ Gives Us Strength
Saint Paul approaches God’s provision from another direction. He has experienced both need and abundance. He knows hunger and plenty. Yet his peace depends on neither. He finds his strength in Christ. He also thanks the Philippians for sharing in his distress and expresses confidence that God will provide for their needs.
Paul teaches us the difference between comfort and Christian contentment. Our faith cannot depend only on circumstances going our way. We may face seasons of abundance and seasons of struggle. Christ remains with us in both. That makes Paul’s message practical for everyday Christian life. Instead of asking whether we have everything we want, we can ask whether we trust Christ with what we have and what we lack.
Gospel Reading – Will We Accept God’s Invitation?
Jesus brings the banquet theme to its climax in the Parable of the Wedding Feast. A king prepares a wedding feast for his son and summons the guests. They refuse to come. Some ignore the invitation, while others mistreat the servants. The king then sends his servants out into the streets to invite anyone they can find. They gather both bad and good, and the wedding hall fills with guests.
Jesus uses the banquet to speak about the kingdom of heaven. This reading directly connects Matthew’s wedding feast with Isaiah’s image of final salvation as a banquet. God’s invitation extends farther than people might expect. Yet the parable also carries a warning: we can reject God’s invitation. Busyness, possessions, ambitions, and other priorities can occupy our attention. The Gospel therefore asks a personal question: How am I responding to God when he calls me? God opens the door. We must decide whether we will enter.
The Catholic View

God’s invitation to the wedding feast is a central theme of the Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Image courtesy of Vecteezy.com.
These four readings share several powerful themes.
- God invites us: Isaiah describes God’s feast. Psalm 23 shows a table the Lord has prepared. Jesus describes the kingdom through a wedding banquet—the repeated imagery of the table points to God’s generosity and invitation.
- God provides for his people: In Isaiah, the Lord provides the feast. The shepherd supplies what his sheep need in Psalm 23. Paul trusts God to provide for the Philippians.
- Faith calls for trust: Psalm 23 teaches us to trust in life’s darkest valleys. Paul shows that same trust while moving between need and abundance. Christian hope rests in God rather than favorable circumstances.
- God’s invitation requires a response: Matthew gives the readings their challenge. Receiving an invitation does not automatically mean accepting it. In the parable, people hear the invitation and still walk away.
That may be the central question these Sunday readings place before us: God has prepared the feast. How will we respond to his invitation?

About Dennis McIntyre
In my early years, I was a member of the Methodist church, where I was baptized as a child and eventually became a lector. I always felt very faith-filled, but something was missing. My wife is Catholic, and my children were baptized as Catholics, which helped me find what I was looking for. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself and walk with Jesus. I was welcomed into the Catholic faith and received the sacraments as a full member of the Catholic Church in 2004. I am a Spiritual Director and commissioned to lead directees through the 19th Annotation. I am very active in ministry, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and providing spiritual direction. I have worked with the sick and terminally ill in local hospitals and hospice care centers, and I have found these ministries challenging and extremely rewarding. In addition to publishing articles on Patheos, I have also published articles on Beliefnet.com. You can read more about the author here.
