Dante Moore Hit: When Football Crosses the Line 2026-09-28T22:03:03-04:00 Dennis McIntyre

During the September 26, 2026, Oregon-USC game, Oregon quarterback Dante Moore suffered a dangerous hit from USC linebacker Desman Stephens II while Moore attempted to slide. Officials ejected Stephens for targeting. Moore left the field on a stretcher and went to a hospital. Oregon later reported that his MRI and CT scans were clean, although Moore was diagnosed with a concussion. The celebration over the hit by Stephens and his teammates while Moore lay there unconscious was despicable.

Football celebrates toughness. Football players compete at extraordinary speed and accept physical contact as part of the game. But toughness does not remove responsibility. The incident raises questions that go beyond football. How should sports punish dangerous behavior? When does accountability become vengeance? What might the values Jesus taught us tell us about how to respond when someone seriously hurts another person? Let’s take a look at the situation through the lens of faith.

What Happened to Dante Moore?

Moore scrambled during the second quarter and began a feet-first slide. In football, this means the player is giving himself up, and the play is over. Stephens made contact as Moore went down. Officials reviewed the play and upheld a targeting penalty, removing Stephens from the game. The scene quickly became emotional. Players from both teams confronted each other, and Oregon coach Dan Lanning later called the hit a “disgusting play.” An ambulance took Moore to Los Angeles County General Hospital. Early reports said he could move all his extremities.

The controversy did not end with the hit. Stephens faced criticism for celebrating afterward with his teammates while Moore received medical attention. Stephens apologized the next day, calling his reaction “completely inappropriate and inexcusable.” USC coach Lincoln Riley also called Stephens’ actions “unacceptable.” USC then suspended Stephens for one game, meaning he will miss the October 3 game against Washington. That distinction matters. The targeting call kept Stephens out of the Oregon game. USC separately imposed the one-game suspension.

Similar Hits, Targeting and Punishment

College football changed its targeting punishment for the 2026 season. Under the experimental NCAA rule, a player’s first upheld targeting foul results in disqualification for the remainder of that game, but it does not automatically produce a suspension for the next game. A second targeting foul during the same season adds a suspension for the first half of the next game. A third or later targeting foul produces an automatic one-game suspension.

That change makes Stephens’ case important. His hit alone did not create an automatic next-game suspension under the new first-offense rule. USC chose to impose additional discipline after considering his conduct. The Big Ten said it supported USC’s decision. Stephens’ previous conduct, according to available reporting, did not include a targeting disqualification during the 2026 season.

The new rule itself provides the clearest comparison with similar targeting hits. Players who repeat the offense in the same season face progressively stronger punishment. In other words, college football tries to combine immediate consequences with an opportunity to correct behavior. That said, is the NCAA’s punishment strong enough to deter future dangerous hits, as we saw in the USC-Oregon game?

The Catholic View

Dante Moore’s injury resulted from a targeting hit. Is College Football doing enough to deter targeting? Image courtesy of Vecteezy.com.

As despicable as the hit was, the celebration by Stephens and his teammates while Moore lay unconscious on the field, and afterward on the sidelines, was just as bad. When coach Lincoln Riley was asked why the player was allowed to remain on the sideline, he responded, “because he is part of our football team.” The apology and the suspension came on Sunday. Was this the result of the backlash, or did it come after reflecting on the incident from the night before? I would give the program the benefit of the doubt. The team has no history of targeting opposing players, but their actions immediately after the hit and for the rest of the game showed little remorse. Situations like this are a teaching opportunity, especially for children and young adults.

Catholic teaching does not require us to pretend wrongdoing did not happen. Jesus taught both mercy and moral responsibility. In Matthew 7:12, He tells His followers to treat others as they would want to be treated. In Matthew 5:44, He commands love even toward enemies. And in Luke 6:36, He calls His followers to be merciful. These teachings point toward a response that protects the injured person without dehumanizing the person responsible.

That gives Catholics a challenging middle path. We can say the hit was wrong; we can support reasonable consequences; and we can pray for Moore’s complete recovery. But we should resist turning Stephens into something less than a human being because of one terrible decision. His apology matters. It does not erase the hit or its consequences. Repentance does not eliminate accountability. But Catholic faith leaves room for a person to recognize wrong, accept consequences, and change. Catholics should want one thing more: restoration.

Oregon’s Response

Oregon’s response offers another striking detail. After Moore’s injury, Oregon’s Coach Lanning gathered his team for prayer and urged them to stay composed. That may be the deeper lesson. Strength is not simply the power to hit back. Sometimes strength means controlling anger, even when it feels justified. Football needs rules that protect players. Teams need discipline. Athletes need accountability.

The Final Word

Justice asks us to confront what went wrong. Mercy reminds us that a person’s worst moment doesn’t have to become the final definition of his life. In football, as in life, we need both.

About Dennis McIntyre

In my early years, I was a member of the Methodist church, where I was baptized as a child and eventually became a lector. I always felt very faith-filled, but something was missing. My wife is Catholic, and my children were baptized as Catholics, which helped me find what I was looking for. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself, walking with Jesus. I was welcomed into the Catholic faith and received the sacraments as a full member of the Catholic Church in 2004. I am a Spiritual Director and commissioned to lead directees through the 19th Annotation. I am very active in ministry, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and providing spiritual direction. I have worked with the sick and terminally ill in local hospitals and hospice care centers, and I have found these ministries challenging and extremely rewarding. In addition to publishing articles on Patheos, I have also published articles on Beliefnet.com. You can read more about the author here.
