The euthanasia debate is back after a nearly two-year-old child was euthanized in the Netherlands in 2025 – image courtesy of Vecteezy.com.
The euthanasia of a nearly two-year-old child in the Netherlands raises difficult questions about suffering, compassion, medicine, and the value of human life. The child died at the end of 2025. The case was the first reported termination of life involving a child between the ages of 1 and 12 under Dutch rules introduced in 2024. A Dutch review committee later concluded that the physician had acted with due care.
For Catholics, this story also raises a deeper question: What does compassion look like when a child is suffering? The answer requires both truth and sensitivity. The child’s suffering was serious. The parents and doctors faced circumstances most families can hardly imagine. At the same time, Catholics can consider whether intentionally ending a child’s life reflects the value Jesus placed on children and vulnerable people. Let’s take a look at the situation.
What Happened to the Two-Year-Old Child?
The child was born extremely prematurely at 26 weeks and suffered severe brain damage. According to the published account in the Dutch review, the child had severe cerebral palsy, visual impairment, and frequent epileptic seizures that were largely resistant to medication. Breathing, swallowing, and sleeping were also difficult. The child’s doctor and parents ultimately concluded that the suffering was unbearable and could not be adequately relieved.
But physicians disagreed. Independent doctors initially concluded that the child’s suffering was not continuously unbearable. They believed reasonable alternatives remained, including palliative measures and other medication that might better control the seizures. A later independent assessment concluded that the requirements for termination of life were met. The review committee ultimately concluded that the treating doctor satisfied the applicable due-care requirements.
That disagreement matters. It shows how difficult evaluations of suffering and treatment can become, especially when the patient cannot make such a decision personally. It is also important not to turn the parents into villains. The available accounts describe parents confronting profound suffering in their child. Catholics can disagree strongly with euthanasia while still recognizing the grief and emotional burden carried by a family in such circumstances.
What Is the Netherlands Euthanasia Law?
The legal picture is more complicated than headlines sometimes suggest. Under the Netherlands’ general euthanasia law, euthanasia and assisted suicide remain criminal offenses unless a physician satisfies statutory due-care requirements. A patient normally must request euthanasia personally. Minors can make such a request from age 12. Children ages 12 to 15 also need parental or guardian consent, while parents or guardians of 16- and 17-year-olds must be consulted.
Children aged 1 to 12 fall under a separate framework. The Dutch government says termination of life in this age group is permitted only when a child is terminally ill, suffers unbearably without prospect of improvement, and has no reasonable alternative for relieving the suffering, including through palliative care. The physician and parents make the decision together, with the child involved if possible. Doctors must follow medical standards and due-care requirements. A special committee reviews the case and sends its findings to the Public Prosecution Service. This distinction is important for accurate discussion. Calling the 2024 change simply a “euthanasia bill for children” can obscure the particular legal framework involved.
The Catholic View

Catholics approach suffering through the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Jesus repeatedly moved toward suffering people rather than away from them. The Gospels describe Him showing compassion to the sick, grieving, and helpless. Matthew 14, for example, connects Jesus’ compassion with caring for and healing sick people.
Jesus also gave children extraordinary attention. In Mark 10, He welcomed children, took them into His arms, and blessed them. His actions give Catholics a powerful picture of how to receive and value the vulnerable. From this Catholic perspective, compassion means more than acknowledging suffering. It calls us to remain alongside suffering people, care for them, relieve pain where possible, and affirm their human worth.
That creates a significant moral contrast with euthanasia. Dutch policy seeks, in exceptional circumstances, to end suffering by ending life. A traditional Catholic response instead emphasizes caring for the suffering person without intentionally ending that person’s life. Yet Catholics should communicate that conviction with humility. The suffering surrounding this Dutch child’s life was real. So was the family’s anguish. Following Jesus, therefore, calls for more than condemning a policy. It calls Catholics to support children with profound disabilities, strengthen families, encourage compassionate medical and palliative care, and remain present when suffering cannot simply be fixed.
The Catholic response to suffering should ultimately point toward the value of the person who suffers. Jesus’ treatment of children and sick people gives us a model built around presence, compassion, and care.

About Dennis McIntyre
In my early years, I was a member of the Methodist church, where I was baptized as a child and eventually became a lector. I always felt very faith-filled, but something was missing. My wife is Catholic, and my children were baptized as Catholics, which helped me find what I was looking for. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself, walking with Jesus. I was welcomed into the Catholic faith and received the sacraments as a full member of the Catholic Church in 2004. I am a Spiritual Director and commissioned to lead directees through the 19th Annotation. I am very active in ministry, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and providing spiritual direction. I have worked with the sick and terminally ill in local hospitals and hospice care centers, and I have found these ministries challenging and extremely rewarding. In addition to publishing articles on Patheos, I have also published articles on Beliefnet.com. You can read more about the author here.
