NBA, Kalshi, and Polymarket: A Risky New Partnership 2026-10-27T13:57:00-04:00 Dennis McIntyre

The NBA has officially entered the growing prediction market industry through new partnerships with Kalshi and Polymarket. League officials say the agreements will increase oversight, improve integrity protections, and create new ways for fans to engage with basketball. However, the move comes as the NBA continues to deal with the fallout from gambling scandals involving league personnel.

Supporters argue that these partnerships provide safeguards and transparency. Critics see a contradiction. They question why the league would deepen its connection to prediction markets after recent gambling-related misconduct damaged public trust in professional basketball. For Catholics, the issue raises broader questions about integrity, stewardship, and money’s influence on sports.

Who Are Kalshi and Polymarket?

Kalshi and Polymarket operate prediction markets. These platforms allow users to buy and sell contracts based on the outcome of future events. Instead of placing traditional sports wagers through sportsbooks, users trade contracts tied to questions such as who will win a game, a championship, or another measurable event.

Kalshi is a federally regulated prediction market exchange overseen by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The company has expanded rapidly by offering markets tied to politics, economics, weather, and sports.

Polymarket is a prediction market platform that has gained significant popularity through cryptocurrency-based event contracts. It offers markets on a wide variety of public events and has become one of the industry’s most recognized names.

Supporters describe prediction markets as information exchanges that reflect common expectations. Critics argue that, from a practical standpoint, many sports-related prediction contracts function similarly to gambling. They are correct.

What the Partnership Includes

According to the NBA, Kalshi and Polymarket will become the league’s “Preferred Prediction Market Exchanges.” The agreements include several key elements:

The NBA also announced a Memorandum of Understanding with the CFTC. League officials say the agreement creates a framework for cooperation and information sharing regarding NBA-related prediction markets. League executives argue these measures will help protect the integrity of professional basketball while allowing fans new opportunities to engage with the sport.

What Is the Difference Between a Sportsbook and Predictive Markets?

There are some major differences between Sportsbooks and predictive markets:

Where They Overlap

The line blurs when prediction markets feature sports categories. If you buy shares in a team winning a game on a prediction platform like Kalshi or Polymarket, the financial motivation and result are virtually identical to placing a moneyline sports bet. However, the market dynamics—better liquidity, lower fees, and market-driven pricing—distinguish the trading experience. The main overlap, as far as the NBA is concerned, is that vulnerability to inside information is the same with sportsbooks and predictive markets.

Why the Partnership Is Questionable

The partnership’s timing has drawn criticism because the NBA is still dealing with the fallout from gambling scandals involving individuals connected to the league. One of the most significant cases involved former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter. The NBA permanently banned Porter after an investigation found that he disclosed confidential information to bettors, placed bets on NBA games, and manipulated his participation in games to influence bet outcomes. Porter later pleaded guilty to a federal wire fraud conspiracy charge related to the gambling scheme. The scandal damaged confidence in the integrity of NBA competition by suggesting that insider information and manipulated player performance could influence betting outcomes.

The partnership also comes after broader investigations into gambling-related activity involving other NBA figures. These cases have reinforced concerns that expanded gambling and prediction-market activity can create conflicts of interest and increase pressure on athletes, coaches, and league personnel. Critics argue that although the NBA says the partnerships will improve oversight, the league is also becoming more financially connected to industries that create temptation and integrity risks. Some observers question whether the solution to gambling-related problems is deeper involvement with gambling-adjacent businesses.

Others counter that prediction markets already exist and that partnerships provide the NBA with greater visibility and control than remaining outside the system. Even so, the conflict remains difficult to ignore. The league is promoting stronger integrity measures while simultaneously expanding relationships with companies whose business models depend on people wagering on future outcomes. This calls the NBA’s integrity credibility into question.

The Catholic View

Predictive markets Kalshi and Polymarket have partnered with the NBA, image courtesy of Vecteezy.com.

Jesus consistently emphasized integrity, honesty, self-control, and faithful stewardship. His teachings focused on serving God rather than pursuing wealth or personal gain at any cost. In Matthew 5:37, Jesus taught His followers to be truthful in all things: “Let your ‘Yes’ be yes and your ‘No,’ no.” The gambling scandal involving Jontay Porter violated that principle because it involved deception and the misuse of trust.

Jesus also warned about the dangers of allowing money to become a controlling influence. In Matthew 6:24, He said that people cannot serve both God and money. While prediction markets and gambling aren’t identical in every respect, Catholics should carefully consider whether financial speculation on sports encourages healthy stewardship or an excessive pursuit of profit.

Jesus also taught that leaders carry special responsibility. Luke 12:48 states that much is required from those who have been given much. Professional athletes, coaches, and league officials influence millions of people. Their actions should encourage integrity rather than create opportunities for corruption.

As the NBA seeks to balance fan engagement, business growth, and competitive integrity, questions will remain about whether expanding ties to prediction markets truly reduces risk or creates new challenges.

About Dennis McIntyre

In my early years, I was a member of the Methodist church, where I was baptized as a child and eventually became a lector. I always felt very faith-filled, but something was missing. My wife is Catholic, and my children were baptized as Catholics, which helped me find what I was looking for. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself and walk with Jesus. In 2004, I was welcomed into the Catholic faith and received the sacraments as a full member of the Catholic Church. I am a Spiritual Director and commissioned to lead directees through the 19th Annotation. I am very active in ministry, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and providing spiritual direction. I have worked with the sick and terminally ill in local hospitals and hospice care centers, and I have found these ministries challenging and extremely rewarding. In addition to publishing articles on Patheos, I have also published articles on Beliefnet.com. You can read more about the author here.
