Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, faces one of the largest privacy-related penalties in American history after a New Mexico judge ordered it to pay $25 billion, following a jury’s conclusion that Meta misled users about how it handled personal data and protected privacy. The case traces back to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, a controversy that first erupted nearly a decade ago but still affects the company’s reputation today.
The lawsuit highlights growing concerns about transparency, data collection, and corporate accountability in the digital age. While Meta argues that it plans to appeal the decision, the ruling sends a strong message that courts and regulators are willing to impose substantial penalties when companies mislead consumers about privacy protections.
Meta’s Recent History With Lawsuits
Meta has faced legal scrutiny for years over privacy, data collection, and platform practices. The company’s legal challenges intensified after 2018 revelations that Cambridge Analytica obtained data from millions of Facebook users without their consent.
In 2019, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission imposed a $5 billion penalty on Facebook over privacy violations linked to the Cambridge Analytica scandal. At the time, it was the largest privacy-related fine ever issued by the FTC.
Meta has also faced lawsuits from states, international regulators, and consumer groups. In addition to privacy concerns, the company has been challenged over issues such as children’s mental health, content moderation, advertising practices, and the handling of misinformation. According to Reuters, Meta previously participated in multistate settlements involving billions of dollars in claims related to its platforms. These legal battles have made privacy compliance and consumer protection central issues for the company. Despite these challenges, Meta remains one of the world’s largest technology firms, serving billions of users across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and other platforms.
The Latest Privacy Lawsuit and Penalty
The New Mexico case centers on allegations that Meta misled users about how their personal information was collected, protected, and shared.
According to Reuters and CNBC, jurors found that Meta made misleading statements regarding privacy protections and data handling following the Cambridge Analytica controversy. The court concluded that these representations violated New Mexico’s consumer protection laws. Jurors reportedly found more than 43 million violations tied to statements that users encountered over several years. A judge noted that Facebook allegedly failed to conduct the comprehensive investigation it promised after the Cambridge Analytica revelations became public. New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez argued that users were led to believe they had more control over their information than they actually did.
This lawsuit differs from many previous privacy cases. It focuses on alleged deception rather than solely on a data breach or unauthorized data-sharing event. The state argued that users’ information was mishandled and that Meta repeatedly communicated inaccurate information about its privacy safeguards and practices.
Another major difference is the judgment’s size. The $25 billion penalty far exceeds the company’s previous $5 billion FTC settlement and stands among the largest consumer-protection judgments ever imposed against a technology company. This $25 billion ruling marks the largest fine ever levied against Meta, and it stands as one of the largest corporate civil judgments in U.S. history. Meta disputes the ruling and says it intends to appeal.
The Catholic View

Whether Meta ultimately prevails on appeal, the allegations in this case sharply contrast with the values Jesus taught. Jesus consistently emphasized truth, honesty, and integrity. In John 8:32, He said, “and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” His ministry called people to live transparently before God and one another. Unfortunately, Meta has been accused of, and found liable for, deceptive practices in most of its recent lawsuits. This shifts the perspective from accidental errors to a broader corporate culture.
In Matthew 5:37, Jesus taught, “Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’” This instruction encourages straightforward communication and rejects misleading statements or half-truths. The accusations against Meta claim users received information that did not accurately reflect how their data was collected, safeguarded, or shared. If those allegations prove true through the appeals process, they would directly conflict with Jesus’ call for honesty and transparency.
Jesus also demonstrated concern for the vulnerable. Companies that hold personal information wield significant power over their users’ lives. Catholic ethics therefore call organizations to exercise that power responsibly. They must prioritize the dignity of the people they serve rather than placing profits, growth, or public image above truth. The controversy reminds us that trust is difficult to earn and easy to lose. Businesses, churches, governments, and individuals alike must practice integrity if they wish to maintain credibility. The teachings of Jesus point toward accountability, truthfulness, and genuine concern for others, values that remain relevant in today’s digital economy.
The Final Word
Meta’s $25 billion penalty represents a landmark moment in the ongoing debate over privacy, transparency, and corporate accountability. The case reaches back to the Cambridge Analytica scandal but focuses on whether the company misled users about how it handled their information. As appeals move forward, the lawsuit will likely influence how technology companies communicate privacy practices for years to come. For Catholics, the controversy also underscores the enduring importance of truthfulness, integrity, and responsible stewardship of the trust others place in us.

About Dennis McIntyre
In my early years, I was a member of the Methodist church, where I was baptized as a child and eventually became a lector. I always felt very faith-filled, but something was missing. My wife is Catholic, and my children were baptized as Catholics, which helped me find what I was looking for. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself and walk with Jesus. In 2004, I was welcomed into the Catholic faith and received the sacraments as a full member of the Catholic Church. I am a Spiritual Director and commissioned to lead directees through the 19th Annotation. I am very active in ministry, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and providing spiritual direction. I have worked with the sick and terminally ill in local hospitals and hospice care centers, and I have found these ministries challenging and extremely rewarding. In addition to publishing articles on Patheos, I have also published articles on Beliefnet.com. You can read more about the author here.
