The readings for the Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time focus on one of the most important lessons in the Catholic life: forgiveness. Each reading reminds us that God is merciful and asks us to share that same mercy with others. Holding on to anger, resentment, and grudges can damage our relationships with God and the people around us. Through these passages, we learn that forgiveness is not simply a kind suggestion. It is central to living as disciples of Jesus Christ.

From the wisdom of Sirach to Jesus’ teachings in the Gospel of Matthew, the message remains clear. God forgives us generously, and He calls us to forgive others with the same generosity. These readings invite us to reflect on our own hearts and consider whether we have truly embraced the mercy that God offers and expects us to share. Let’s look at this Sunday’s readings.

Gospel Text – Matthew 18:21-35

Peter approached Jesus and asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as seven times?”

Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times. That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the accounting, a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount. Since he had no way of paying it back, his master ordered him to be sold, along with his wife, his children, and all his property, in payment of the debt. At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.’ Moved with compassion, the master of that servant let him go and forgave him the loan.

When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a much smaller amount. He seized him and started to choke him, demanding, ‘Pay back what you owe.’ Falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’ But he refused. Instead, he had the fellow servant put in prison until he paid back the debt.

Now when his fellow servants saw what had happened, they were deeply disturbed and went to their master and reported the whole affair. His master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to. Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant, as I had pity on you?’ Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers until he should pay back the whole debt. So will my heavenly Father do to you, unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart.”

1st Reading – Let Go of Anger and Resentment

The first reading from Sirach speaks directly about anger, hatred, and revenge. The author warns that these attitudes are sinful and can take root in a person’s heart. Sirach asks an important question: if we refuse to show mercy to others, how can we expect God to show mercy to us? The reading encourages us to remember God’s commandments and His covenant. Instead of focusing on others’ faults, we should remember our own need for forgiveness. We are also reminded that life on earth is temporary. Given our limited time, let’s not waste it holding grudges.

The meaning of this reading is both practical and spiritual. Anger and resentment often feel justified, especially when someone has hurt us. However, Sirach teaches that revenge does not lead to peace. Forgiveness frees us from bitterness and allows God’s mercy to work within us. When we choose forgiveness, we imitate the compassion that God continually shows toward His people.

Responsorial Psalm – Celebrating God’s Mercy

The responsorial psalm is a beautiful prayer of praise for God’s mercy. The psalmist encourages the faithful to bless the Lord and remember all the good things He has done. God forgives sins, heals wounds, redeems lives, and fills His people with love and compassion. One of the psalm’s most powerful images describes God’s forgiveness. The psalm says that God removes our sins “as far as the east is from the west.” This image emphasizes the completeness of God’s mercy. He does not continually remind us of our past failures. Instead, He offers forgiveness and a new beginning.

The message of Psalm 103 complements the first reading perfectly. While Sirach teaches us to forgive others, the psalm reminds us why we should. We forgive because God forgave us first. Every disciple depends on God’s compassion each day. Reflecting on His mercy should inspire gratitude and encourage us to extend that same mercy to those around us.

2nd Reading – Living for the Lord

In his Letter to the Romans, Saint Paul reminds Catholics that their lives belong to the Lord. He explains that whether we live or die, we belong to Christ. Jesus died and rose again so that He might be Lord of both the living and the dead. Although this reading is brief, it contains a powerful truth. Catholics do not exist only for themselves, but should live every part of life in relationship with Christ. Our decisions, attitudes, and actions should reflect our commitment to Him.

The connection to the theme of forgiveness is clear. If we belong to Christ, then we should act as He acts. Jesus consistently demonstrated mercy, compassion, and forgiveness. Followers of Christ cannot claim to belong to Him while refusing to forgive others. Saint Paul reminds us that our lives have a greater purpose than protecting our pride or seeking revenge. We are called to reflect the love of Christ in everything we do.

Gospel Reading – The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant

The Gospel reading contains one of Jesus’ most famous teachings about forgiveness. Peter approaches Jesus and asks how many times he must forgive someone who sins against him. Peter suggests forgiving seven times, which was already considered generous. Jesus responds by saying that forgiveness should not be limited. He tells Peter to forgive “seventy-seven times,” meaning that forgiveness should have no limit.

To explain this teaching, Jesus tells the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant. In the story, a king forgives a servant who owes an enormous debt. The servant could never repay what he owes, yet the king cancels the debt out of mercy. However, after receiving this incredible gift, the servant refuses to forgive a fellow servant who owes him a much smaller amount. Instead, he has the man thrown into prison. When the king learns of this action, he is angry. He reminds the servant that he should have shown the same mercy that was shown to him. The king then punishes the unforgiving servant.

The meaning of this parable is straightforward and challenging. God has forgiven us far more than we can ever repay. Every person stands before God in need of mercy. When we refuse to forgive others, we fail to appreciate the mercy we have received ourselves. Jesus teaches that forgiveness is not optional for His followers. It is an essential response to God’s grace.

Several important themes unite these readings:

The Final Word

These readings challenge us to examine our hearts and let go of grudges that may have taken root over time. While forgiveness is often difficult, it is at the center of the Catholic faith. As we reflect on God’s incredible mercy, we are invited to share that same mercy with others, becoming living signs of Christ’s love in the world.

About Dennis McIntyre

In my early years, I was a member of the Methodist church, where I was baptized as a child and eventually became a lector. I always felt very faith-filled, but something was missing. My wife is Catholic, and my children were baptized as Catholics, which helped me find what I was looking for. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself, walking with Jesus. I was welcomed into the Catholic faith and received the sacraments as a full member of the Catholic Church in 2004. I am a Spiritual Director and commissioned to lead directees through the 19th Annotation. I am very active in ministry, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and providing spiritual direction. I have spent time working with the sick and terminally ill in local hospitals and hospice care centers, and I have found these ministries challenging and extremely rewarding. In addition to publishing articles on Patheos, I have also published articles on Beliefnet.com. You can read more about the author here.
