The readings for the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time challenge us to embrace Jesus through our faith and sacrifice. These passages reveal that following God often requires sacrifice, courage, and perseverance. The readings remind us that true faith is not simply about belief. It is about trusting God enough to follow Him, even when the journey is difficult. Through prayer, transformation, and obedience, we discover the deeper life that Christ promises. Let’s look at the readings for the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Gospel Text – Matthew 16:21-27

“Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”

Then Jesus said to his disciples,

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay all according to his conduct.”

1st Reading – Jeremiah’s Burning Desire to Proclaim God’s Word

Jeremiah speaks honestly about the struggles he faces as God’s prophet. He feels overwhelmed by the mission entrusted to him and frustrated by the ridicule he receives from others. People mock him because he faithfully proclaims God’s message. At times, Jeremiah wants to stop speaking about God altogether. Yet whenever he tries to remain silent, he feels God’s word burning within him like a fire. He cannot keep it contained. Despite the opposition he encounters, he continues his prophetic mission.

Jeremiah’s experience shows that faithfulness to God sometimes comes with challenges. Catholics who defend the truth, uphold their beliefs, or live according to the Gospel will face criticism or misunderstanding. This reading reminds us that God’s call is stronger than human opposition. Jeremiah continues his mission because God’s word has transformed his heart. His example encourages us to remain faithful even when discipleship becomes difficult. God may not always remove obstacles, but He provides the strength needed to remain committed to His purpose.

Responsorial Psalm – Longing for God Above Everything Else

Psalm 63 is a prayer of deep desire for God. The psalmist compares his longing for the Lord to a thirsty person searching for water in a dry and barren land. He praises God’s love and declares that God’s kindness is more valuable than life itself. Throughout the psalm, the writer expresses joy, gratitude, and trust. He finds strength and satisfaction in God’s presence.

This psalm reminds us that the human heart was created for a relationship with God. While many people seek happiness through material possessions, success, or recognition, true fulfillment comes from knowing and loving God. The image of thirst emphasizes that our spiritual lives need nourishment. Just as the body requires food and water, the soul requires prayer, worship, and closeness to God. The psalm also offers hope during difficult times. When challenges arise, we can find comfort in God’s constant presence and unconditional love.

2nd Reading – Offering Your Life as a Living Sacrifice

In his letter to the Romans, Saint Paul urges Catholics to offer themselves as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. He calls this a proper act of worship. Paul also warns us not to conform to the world’s values and attitudes. Instead, we should allow our minds to be renewed so we can recognize and follow God’s will.

This passage teaches that the Catholic faith affects every area of life. Worship is not limited to church services or prayer. It includes daily decisions, actions, and relationships. Paul’s call to become a living sacrifice means dedicating our entire lives to God. Catholics are invited to place God’s priorities before our own and to live according to Gospel values.

The reading also highlights the importance of transformation. Society often encourages selfishness, materialism, and personal gain. Paul challenges us to think differently and to allow God to shape our hearts and minds. As we grow closer to God, we become better able to discern what is good, pleasing, and aligned with His will.

Gospel Reading – Taking Up the Cross and Following Jesus

In the Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples that He must travel to Jerusalem, suffer, die, and rise again. Peter struggles to accept this message and objects to the idea of a suffering Messiah. Jesus responds firmly, explaining that Peter’s viewpoint reflects human thinking rather than God’s plan. He then teaches His disciples that those who wish to follow Him must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him. Jesus concludes by explaining that those who seek only to save their lives will ultimately lose them (to sin), while those who give their lives for His sake will discover true eternal life.

This Gospel reveals the heart of Catholic discipleship. Jesus does not promise a life free from hardship. Instead, He invites His followers to trust God’s plan even when it involves sacrifice. Taking up the cross means accepting the responsibilities, struggles, and sacrifices that come with remaining faithful to Christ. It does not mean seeking suffering, but rather embracing God’s will with courage and perseverance. Jesus also challenges us to rethink success. The world often values power, wealth, and personal achievement. Christ teaches that true greatness comes through self-giving love, service, and obedience to God. Following Jesus is not easy, but it ultimately leads to eternal life and lasting joy.

The Catholic View

Faith, Sacrifice, and following Christ are the main themes for the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time – image courtesy of Vecteezy.com.

There are several common themes and messages across the readings:

The Final Word

The readings for the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time present a clear invitation to follow God wholeheartedly. Jeremiah teaches perseverance in the face of rejection. The psalmist models a deep thirst for God’s presence. Saint Paul calls us to be transformed and to offer our lives to God. Jesus reveals that true discipleship requires taking up the cross and following Him.

Together, these passages remind us that the Catholic life is both challenging and rewarding. Faith may involve sacrifice, but it also leads to deeper purpose, stronger trust, and lasting union with God. When we place Christ at the center of our lives, we discover that the path of discipleship is ultimately the path to true life.

About Dennis McIntyre

In my early years, I was a member of the Methodist church, where I was baptized as a child and eventually became a lector. I always felt very faith-filled, but something was missing. My wife is Catholic, and my children were baptized as Catholics, which helped me find what I was looking for. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself, walking with Jesus. I was welcomed into the Catholic faith and received the sacraments as a full member of the Catholic Church in 2004. I am a Spiritual Director and commissioned to lead directees through the 19th Annotation. I am very active in ministry, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and providing spiritual direction. I have spent time working with the sick and terminally ill in local hospitals and hospice care centers, and I have found these ministries challenging and extremely rewarding. In addition to publishing articles on Patheos, I have also published articles on Beliefnet.com. You can read more about the author here.
