Is IVF Truly Pro-Life? A Catholic Perspective 2026-07-16T14:25:33-04:00 Dennis McIntyre

The debate over in vitro fertilization (IVF) has become increasingly important among Catholics and pro-life advocates. IVF helps many couples who struggle with infertility achieve their dream of becoming parents. Because IVF often results in the birth of children, many people assume it naturally fits within the pro-life movement. However, the issue is more complex than it appears at first. The pro-life position is traditionally rooted in the belief that every human life has value from the moment of conception. As a result, many Catholics and pro-life organizations have raised concerns about how IVF creates, stores, selects, and sometimes discards human embryos.

To determine whether IVF is truly pro-life, it is important to understand what IVF is, why some people view it as pro-life, and why others believe it conflicts with the core principles of the pro-life movement and the teachings of Jesus. Let’s take a look.

What Is IVF?

In vitro fertilization, commonly called IVF, is a fertility treatment designed to help people conceive a child. During the process, doctors collect mature eggs from a woman’s ovaries and fertilize them with sperm in a laboratory. The resulting embryos are monitored, and one or more may be transferred to a woman’s uterus in the hope of achieving pregnancy. IVF has become one of the most common forms of assisted reproductive technology. It is often used to address infertility, blocked fallopian tubes, ovulation disorders, endometriosis, or certain genetic concerns. The treatment can involve a couple’s own reproductive cells or donor eggs, sperm, or embryos.

A significant ethical concern arises because IVF frequently creates multiple embryos during a treatment cycle. Not all of those embryos are implanted. Some are frozen for future use, while others may never be transferred. Depending on the circumstances, embryos may be discarded or destroyed. For those who believe human life begins at conception, the status and treatment of these embryos become central moral questions.

Some People Believe IVF Is Pro-Life

People who support IVF often do so because they see it as a way of creating life rather than ending it. Couples who pursue IVF are usually seeking children, not trying to avoid them. From this perspective, IVF helps families welcome new lives into the world. Supporters also argue that infertility can be a painful and heartbreaking experience. They believe modern medicine can be used to overcome biological obstacles and help married couples fulfill their desire to have children. Many Christians view medical advances as gifts that can be used responsibly to relieve suffering and promote family life.

Another reason some people describe IVF as pro-life is that it often results in healthy births. They focus on the children who would not have existed without the procedure. For these supporters, every baby born through IVF represents a victory for life. Many Protestants hold varying views on IVF and may support ethical forms of the treatment while encouraging careful consideration of how embryos are handled. While these arguments are understandable and often motivated by compassion, the question remains whether the entire IVF process aligns with the consistent protection of all human life.

Why IVF Is Not Pro-Life

The strongest argument against calling IVF “pro-life” is that the procedure often fails to protect every human life it creates. The traditional pro-life position maintains that human life begins at conception. If that belief is accepted, then each embryo created through IVF is already a unique human life deserving protection. The moral challenge is that IVF commonly produces multiple embryos, and not all of them are ultimately allowed to develop and be born. In many IVF cycles, embryos are frozen indefinitely, selected based on certain characteristics, or discarded. From a pro-life perspective, these actions involve human beings at their earliest stage of development. Therefore, while IVF seeks to bring one child into existence, it may simultaneously place other embryonic lives at risk.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops argues that every human life possesses immeasurable value from conception and that IVF often results in the loss of human embryos. Church teaching also maintains that IVF separates procreation from the marital act and allows technological control over the beginning of life.

Many pro-life advocates believe that consistency matters. If unborn life deserves protection in the womb, they argue that embryonic life deserves protection in the laboratory as well. Under this reasoning, a procedure that intentionally creates more embryos than will be brought to birth cannot accurately be described as fully pro-life. This position does not diminish the worth of children conceived through IVF. Every child is created in God’s image and possesses equal dignity and value. The ethical concern relates to the process, not the children born from it.

The Catholic View

While IVF has been tremendously successful for families struggling with infertility, it can introduce serious moral issues – image courtesy of Vecteezy.com.

Jesus consistently demonstrated compassion toward those who suffered. Infertility can be an emotionally difficult burden, and Catholics should respond with empathy, understanding, and practical support for couples facing that struggle. At the same time, Jesus consistently valued the vulnerable and powerless. Throughout His ministry, He elevated those society overlooked and emphasized the inherent worth of every human being. A Catholic worldview informed by Jesus’ teachings seeks to defend the dignity of all people, especially those who cannot defend themselves.

When applied to the IVF debate, many Catholics believe embryos belong among the most vulnerable members of the human family. If human life begins at conception, then embryos deserve protection regardless of their location—in a womb, a laboratory, or a storage facility. Jesus never taught that human beings should be measured by usefulness, health, desirability, or developmental stage. Instead, His teachings emphasized love, dignity, and care for the weakest. The vast majority of Catholics believe that practices involving the destruction or selection of embryos conflict with these values. Jesus’ broader teachings on the value of human life lead many disciples to seek solutions that respect every embryo. For these Catholics, truly pro-life ethics must protect all human life, not only the lives that eventually make it to birth.

The Final Word

This is an incredibly sensitive and emotional issue for many families. A close personal friend and his wife have gone through the process and produced two beautiful children. It is hard to see these children and understand how the process could harm families, but life begins at conception. Embryos that are stored, donated to science, and/or destroyed deserve the same respect for their human lives as does any child born through the process. Please pray for all the families facing difficult decisions as a result of this process.

About Dennis McIntyre

In my early years, I was a member of the Methodist church, where I was baptized as a child and eventually became a lector. I always felt very faith-filled, but something was missing. My wife is Catholic, and my children were baptized as Catholics, which helped me find what I was looking for. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself, walking with Jesus. I was welcomed into the Catholic faith and received the sacraments as a full member of the Catholic Church in 2004. I am a Spiritual Director and commissioned to lead directees through the 19th Annotation. I am very active in ministry, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and providing spiritual direction. I have spent time working with the sick and terminally ill in local hospitals and hospice care centers, and I have found these ministries challenging and extremely rewarding. In addition to publishing articles on Patheos, I have also published articles on Beliefnet.com. You can read more about the author here.
