Trust and courage are recurring themes for the Twelfth Sunday of Ordinary Time – image courtesy of Vecteezy.com.
This weekend’s readings for the Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time speak about trust, courage, and faith in God during difficult times. They show us that suffering and fear are part of life, but they do not have the final word. God sees our struggles, stays with us, and calls us to stand firm. These readings invite us to trust God even when others oppose us or when we feel alone. They remind us that God’s mercy and love are stronger than sin, fear, and hardship.
Gospel Text – Matthew 10:26-33
Jesus said to the Twelve:
“Fear no one. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.
Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Everyone who acknowledges me before others, I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.”
1st Reading – Trust in the Midst of Fear
In this reading, the prophet Jeremiah feels surrounded by enemies. People watch him closely, waiting for him to fail. They even plan to trap him. Jeremiah feels afraid, but he does not give up. Instead, he turns to God. He says that the Lord stands with him like a powerful warrior. Because of this, he believes his enemies will not win. This shows strong faith. Even when fear fills his heart, he chooses to trust God’s protection.
This passage teaches us that fear is real, but we should not let it control us. We can bring our fears to God just as Jeremiah did. God understands our struggles and offers strength. When we trust Him, we can face challenges with courage. Jeremiah ends by praising God. He thanks God for saving the poor from evil. This reminds us to praise God even before we see the outcome. Faith includes trust, hope, and gratitude.
Responsorial Psalm – A Cry for Help
The psalm continues the theme of suffering. The writer feels rejected and alone. Others treat him like a stranger. He suffers because of his love for God. Despite this pain, the psalmist calls out to God for help. He asks God to rescue him and not to hide His face. This honest prayer shows a deep relationship with God. The writer does not pretend everything is fine. He speaks openly and trusts that God listens.
The psalm also speaks of hope. It reminds us that God hears the poor and does not forget those in distress. This message brings comfort. Even when people reject us, God does not. This reading teaches us to pray honestly. We can share our pain, fears, and struggles with God. Prayer does not always remove suffering right away, but it brings us closer to God and strengthens our faith.
2nd Reading – Grace Is Greater Than Sin
In this reading, Saint Paul explains the difference between sin and grace. He recalls how sin entered the world through one man, Adam. Because of sin, death came into the world. But Paul does not stop there. He brings good news. He explains that Jesus Christ brings a gift that is greater than sin. While Adam’s action led to death, Jesus’ sacrifice brings life and grace.
This is an important message. It shows that sin is powerful, but God’s grace is stronger. No matter how great sin may seem, God’s mercy is greater. Jesus offers forgiveness and new life to everyone who believes in Him. This reading gives hope. It reminds us that we are not trapped by sin. Through Jesus, we receive grace, healing, and a new beginning.
Gospel Reading – Do Not Be Afraid
In the Gospel, Jesus speaks directly to His disciples. He tells them not to be afraid. He knows they will face rejection and danger, but He encourages them to stay strong. Jesus reminds them that nothing is hidden from God. God sees everything, and the truth will be known. This gives courage to those who stand for what is right. He also says that God cares deeply for each person. Even the smallest details of our lives matter to Him. If God cares for sparrows, He cares even more for us.
Jesus calls His followers to acknowledge Him before others. This means living our faith openly, even when it feels difficult. He promises that those who stay faithful will be honored before God. This reading challenges us to let go of fear. It calls us to trust God fully and to live our faith with courage.
The Catholic View

Trust and courage are the primary themes in Sunday’s readings – image courtesy of Vecteezy.com.
All these readings share strong themes of trust, courage, and hope. Each passage shows that following God is not always easy. People may oppose us, and we may feel afraid or alone. However, God never abandons us.
- First, the readings highlight trust in God during hardship. Jeremiah trusts God despite threats. The psalmist cries out but still believes in God’s help. We learn that faith does not remove difficulty, but it helps us face it with strength.
- Second, the readings show that God sees and cares. In the Gospel, Jesus reminds us that God knows every detail of our lives. This truth brings comfort. We are never forgotten or alone.
- Third, the readings point to hope and grace. Paul explains that Jesus brings life and mercy that overcome sin. This message assures us that no situation is beyond God’s power to heal and restore.
- Finally, the readings call us to courage. Jesus asks us to live our faith without fear. He invites us to stand firm and trust Him.
The Final Word
Together, these messages encourage us to trust God deeply, speak to Him honestly, and live our faith boldly. Even in hard times, we can remember that God is with us, strengthens us, and leads us toward hope and life.

About Dennis McIntyre
In my early years, I was a member of the Methodist church, where I was baptized as a child and eventually became a lector. I always felt very faith-filled, but something was missing. My wife is Catholic, and my children were baptized as Catholics, which helped me find what I was looking for. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself, walking with Jesus. I was welcomed into the Catholic faith and received the sacraments as a full member of the Catholic Church in 2004. I am a Spiritual Director and commissioned to lead directees through the 19th Annotation. I am very active in ministry, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and providing spiritual direction. I have spent time working with the sick and terminally ill in local hospitals and hospice care centers, and I have found these ministries challenging and extremely rewarding. In addition to publishing articles on Patheos, I have also published articles on Beliefnet.com. You can read more about the author here.
