The New York Knicks won the NBA championship Saturday night. No, this is not a fictional story. For long-suffering Knicks fans like myself, this erases all the heartache from the past 53 years. The victory brought joy, excitement, and pride to New York City. Fans filled the streets, celebrated late into the night, and shared a historic moment together.
Yet, the celebration did not stay peaceful everywhere. In some areas, the night turned chaotic and violent. What began as a joyful event became a troubling reminder of how quickly emotions can shift in large crowds. This article will explore the Knicks’ journey, their history of struggle, and the events that unfolded across the city, while also considering a deeper perspective inspired by the teachings of Jesus.
The Knicks’ Championship
The Knicks built one of the most memorable playoff seasons in NBA history. The team showed resilience, teamwork, and a refusal to give up. The Knicks started the playoffs down 2-1 to the Atlanta Hawks, and this became a crucial turning point for their playoff run. They went on to win the next 13 games in a row, often by double-digits. They closed out Atlanta, swept the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Cleveland Cavaliers. This led to the NBA Finals against the Western Division Champions, the San Antonio Spurs.
The Knicks won the first two games of the series in San Antonio, and returned to Madison Square Garden with the fans dreaming of another sweep. The Spurs dashed that dream with a victory in Game 3. In Game 4, the Knicks completed the greatest comeback in NBA history, coming back from a 29-point deficit to beat the Spurs with a tip-in by OG Anunoby with 1.2 seconds left. This gave the Knicks a commanding 3-1 series lead.
In Game 5, the Knicks secured the championship with a 94–90 victory. Jalen Brunson led the team with 45 of the Knicks 94 points and earned Finals MVP honors. Brunson’s effort was second only to the Bulls’ Michael Jordan, who scored 45 of his team’s 87 points in Game 6 of the 1998 Finals. As in all Finals games, the Knicks fell behind early and had to come back for the win and the title.
53 Years of Heartache
This title meant more than just a trophy. It ended a 53-year championship drought and brought the team back to the top of the NBA for the first time since 1973. The championship felt especially meaningful because of the long period of struggle that came before it. For decades, the Knicks faced disappointment and missed opportunities.
The team last won a title in 1973 and failed to reach that level again for over five decades. They came close at times, including Finals appearances in 1994 and 1999, but could not secure another championship. 1994 was especially heartbreaking as the Knicks led the Houston Rockets 3 games to 2 in the series before Houston closed out the series with two wins at home.
In more recent seasons, the Knicks showed promise but still fell short. For example, they reached the Eastern Conference Finals in the 2024–25 season but lost in six games to the Indiana Pacers. This long history of losses shaped the fan base. Many supporters waited their entire lives to see a championship. That deep emotional investment made the 2026 victory even more powerful and intense.
Violence Across NYC After the Win
After the final buzzer, thousands of fans flooded the streets of New York City. Many celebrated peacefully, but some of the crowd turned destructive. Reports showed that at least 63 people were arrested during the celebrations. Authorities also reported stabbings, a shooting, and injuries to police officers.
Crowds damaged property, including vehicles and a school bus that was reportedly set on fire in Times Square. People threw bottles, climbed structures, and clashed with police officers as tensions increased. City leaders noted that most fans celebrated responsibly. However, the acts of violence overshadowed parts of the night. The celebration, which should have united the city, revealed how quickly excitement can turn into disorder.
The Catholic View

The events in New York offer a chance to reflect on deeper values. Personally, I don’t understand how we go from “we won the championship,” to “let’s burn a school bus.” Mayor Mamdani said:
“There were a select number of New Yorkers who celebrated in a way that was, frankly, unacceptable. It was not a celebration; it was an excuse, whether it be to attack someone around them or to be violent even towards our police officers.”
Unfortunately, this behavior seems to be part of too many celebrations today and is completely unacceptable. Jesus teaches us to practice love, self-control, and respect for others. He calls us to love our neighbors and treat others with kindness. These principles always apply, whether in celebration or in daily life. A true celebration should build community, not harm it.
The violence that followed the championship contrasts sharply with those values. Instead of peace and unity, some actions caused fear, injury, and damage. While joy is natural, losing control can lead to harm. This moment reminds us that success does not depend only on winning. It also depends on how people respond. A peaceful celebration reflects character and compassion, which align more closely with the values Jesus taught.
The Final Word
The New York Knicks’ 2026 NBA championship stands as a historic achievement. It ended decades of frustration and brought hope to a loyal fan base. The team’s resilience and determination inspired millions. At the same time, the city’s reaction showed a different side of human behavior. While many celebrated responsibly, others turned joy into destruction.
This contrast offers an important lesson. Victory can unite people, but only when guided by respect and self-control. The Knicks’ win will live on in sports history, but the events in the streets remind us that how we celebrate matters just as much as the victory itself. The Knicks will have a ticker-tape parade in the “Canyon of Heroes” on Thursday. Please pray for peace at the parade, and that the offenders from Saturday’s violence are arrested and charged quickly to send a message for future celebrations.

About Dennis McIntyre
In my early years, I was a member of the Methodist church, where I was baptized as a child and eventually became a lector. I always felt very faith-filled, but something was missing. My wife is Catholic, and my children were baptized as Catholics, which helped me find what I was looking for. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself, walking with Jesus. I was welcomed into the Catholic faith and received the sacraments as a full member of the Catholic Church in 2004. I am a Spiritual Director and commissioned to lead directees through the 19th Annotation. I am very active in ministry, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and providing spiritual direction. I have spent time working with the sick and terminally ill in local hospitals and hospice care centers, and I have found these ministries challenging and extremely rewarding. In addition to publishing articles on Patheos, I have also published articles on Beliefnet.com. You can read more about the author here.
