July 24 is International Self-Care Day. In today’s world we are constantly on the go and 24 hours is not enough to get everything done that we feel we need to complete. The concept of “self-care” is not a priority for many people and as a result people suffer from stress, anxiety, fatigue, and a myriad of other symptoms as they rush to complete their “to-do” list for the day. International Self-Care Day is an opportunity to focus on ourselves and prioritize activities that help us to “recharge our batteries” and focus on things we like to do, but never get a chance to. Let’s take a look at how we can use this day to introduce more “self-care” into our schedules.
What Is Self-Care?
The National Day Calendar identifies self-care as:
When you take care of yourself to stay well, you are practicing self-care. Staying well includes taking care of your whole self: physically, mentally, and emotionally. For some, self-care also includes taking care of themselves spiritually. So what exactly does self-care look like? It could be as simple as having some quiet time each day. Others might have coffee with a friend at least once a week.
The very large majority of folks today don’t prioritize self-care practices. We all need time to rest, relax, and recharge our batteries. For some that means participating in activities such as:
- Having a regular sleep routine
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Keeping a reflective journal
- Practicing gratitude
- Getting a massage
- Listening to relaxing music
- Reading a good book
- Learning to say no
- Asking for help when necessary
- Prayer
Prayer Is A Big Part of Self-Care for Catholics

Prayer can be a big part of your self-care program. Image courtesy of Guideposts.
Jesus goes off on His own to rest and pray to God; practicing self-care for His own journey. This served as an example for the Apostles and remains one for all of us today.
Mark 1:35: Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.
Luke 5:15-16: The report about him spread all the more, and great crowds assembled to listen to him and to be cured of their ailments, but he would withdraw to deserted places to pray.
Mark 6:30-33: The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat. So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place. People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them.
So let’s use July 24 to begin a new practice in our lives, or extend an existing one by practicing self-care on a regular basis. What better way to take care of yourself than to spend quiet time with our Lord!
Do you practice self-care and if so, how? How does practicing self-care help you through you day, week, or month? Please feel free to share your self-care stories. As always, comments are welcome and encouraged. I will respond back as quickly as I can.
God Bless

About Dennis McIntyre
In my early years I was a member of the Methodist church where I was baptized as a child and eventually became a lector for the church. I always felt I was a very faith-filled person, but that something was missing. My wife is Catholic and my children were baptized as Catholic and this helped me to find what I was looking for, to be part of something so much bigger than myself walking together with Jesus. I was welcomed into the Catholic faith and received the sacraments as a full member of the Catholic Church in 2004. I am a Spiritual Director, and very active in ministry serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister in addition to providing spiritual direction. I have spent time working with the sick and the terminally ill in local hospitals and Hospice Care centers and found these ministries to be very difficult, but extremely rewarding.
