What did Dolly Parton teach us by sharing Jesus? | Image created in ChatGPT by the author.
Like many, Dolly Parton captured my attention as a little girl when she sang country music on the television screen. I couldn’t stop watching. There was something unique about Dolly that words cannot describe. She lit up the stage, strumming her guitar, beaming with warm smiles and bleach-blonde locks. But there was more.
“I’m not offended by all of the dumb blonde jokes because I know I’m not dumb… and I also know that I’m not blonde.” – Dolly Parton
Dolly’s charm was equally fascinating. Her vulnerability seemed to contradict her confidence, but we soon realized that she was just being true to her core. She was proud of “her people” and her rural Tennessee homeland.
Inspired by her musical talent but never a huge fan of the country music sound, I grew to admire Dolly as a person. When she spoke on the red carpet or being interviewed, we knew she was a devout believer in Jesus.

I never met her, but I feel prompted to share the 7 things Dolly Parton taught me about Jesus.
1. Faithful Servant: God-First To the outside world, Dolly Parton was never shy about sharing the message of Jesus. We can find countless interviews of her expressing God’s love for others. Amid cancel culture, Dolly’s popularity grew despite her faithful display of honoring the Lord in public. She never apologized or disregarded God’s blessings upon her life of success. She gave Him the glory.
“I always ask God to work through me and let me be a light of some kind and help in this world.” – Dolly Parton
2. Non-judgmental: Dolly spoke publicly about God being the judge of others, not her, and she lived the creed. She displayed loving others as God commands and encouraged people to seek God’s love. There must be countless individuals who heard Dolly proclaim the Lord without judging the lost and found Him because of her willingness to be the light of Christ.
“If you’re the fine Christian you think you are, why are you judging people? That’s God’s job. We’re not God. We’re not judges. We’re supposed to love one another.” – Dolly Parton
3. Christ-like nature: To me, Dolly Parton wore love on her rhinestone-covered sleeves. Her positive humor and playfulness were contagious. Whenever she appeared on the screen, I stopped to listen and walked away laughing, teary-eyed, or both. She seemed to love bringing joy to the world.
“It’s hard to be a diamond in a rhinestone world.” – Dolly Parton
4. A Generous Warrior: Dolly Parton’s lifetime philanthropic contribution includes gifting over 300 million free books through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and funneling tens of millions of dollars into medical research, education, and emergency disaster relief. Dolly said that her philanthropic efforts were more important than her musical legacy.
“I don’t really have a strategy for my donations. I just give from my heart. I never know what I’m going to do or why I’m gonna do it. I just see a need, and if I can fill it, then I will.” Shared during her Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy acceptance.
5. Genuine Humility: Dolly reported being disappointed with the first release of my favorite Dolly Parton song, I Will Always Love You. It wasn’t a monster hit until Whitney Houston’s rendition hit #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 for 14 weeks. In a highly competitive industry, Dolly wasn’t jealous, but graciously celebrated the success Whitney brought to her special song.
“When she started that, I almost wrecked. Honest to God. Had to pull over to the side at Walgreens there in Brentwood… to listen to the rest of it.” — Recalling hearing Whitney’s a cappella opening on the radio in 1992, via Biography.
6. A Kind Spirit: To the outside world, Dolly Parton spread kindness and joy. No one is perfect, but over her 60-year career, there are very few reports of Dolly being upset. She was passionate and would rise up to defend her family and those close to her. Even when confronted with rude or invasive questions, such as Barbara Walters’ 1977 interview, Dolly didn’t shout or curse. Instead, she used quick wit and disarming humor while maintaining absolute composure. Walters’ looked foolish, proving Dolly was always several steps ahead.
“You can be rich in spirit, kindness, love, and all those things that you can’t put a dollar sign on.” – Dolly Parton
7. Lived Her Unique Design: God wired us uniquely. There’s plenty of negative gossip about Dolly’s style and cosmetic adjustments. She never hid her choices or apologized for her look. I wonder how many people were intrigued by Dolly’s appearance and heard a message about Jesus they wouldn’t get otherwise. She believed that God loves everyone and encouraged others to be true to themselves. She cared more about sharing the gospel than people’s opinions. We need more Dolly’s in the world.
“I always think of myself as a workhorse that looks like a show horse, and I’ve got to keep that show horse up. So I do whatever it takes.” – Dolly Parton during a USA Today interview.
Recapping the 7 ways Dolly Parton Shared Jesus. She was:
- Loving
- Humble
- Kind
- Compassionate
- Generous
- Faithful
- Lived an Authentic Life
I see Jesus among this incredible list of attributes and I am a better person because of Dolly’s willingness to be His disciple. She is truly one of a kind, and we will miss her music, smiles, encouragement, and compassion. Millions of fans will continue to love and adore Dolly Parton’s legacy. May the beloved Dolly rest in peace as she sings and dances in Heaven with Jesus.
