adventures
Last updated on: February 16, 2012 at 7:20 pm By Grace Sandra
First for everything! My first time blogging mid-flight, Dallas to Detroit! Although I think I’m about to get shut down. I’m on a big adventure for these next few weeks. I’ve just left somewhat-warm, Texas to head to somewhat-freezing Detroit. I’m driving in a very-warm car 2 hours home, only to get back up and drive 5 hours to a somewhat-freezing Cleveland. These past three days have been…wonderful…sad. Wonderfully sad… (more…) Read more

A mash-up for feeling like a caged animal
Last updated on: February 11, 2012 at 10:22 am By Grace Sandra
I mentioned a few weeks ago that I’m not who I thought was, and that there are aspects of my life right now that are downright hellish. I feel like a caged animal. As I was spending some time with the Lord this morning I read, Psalm 39:7 – “But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.” That got me thinking about the beautiful poem of May Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings... Read more

Willow’s hair, my hair, black women’s hair is important whether we like it or not.
Last updated on: February 9, 2012 at 1:38 pm By Grace Sandra
I could cry, I could cry, I could cry because I have a herd of work trips coming up and absolutely no hair plan whatsoever. I posted as much on Facebook the other day with a laundry list of my many —wildly expensive— options: Cut & press, every three weeks-ish ($45 – $85) Kinky Twists ($185) Micro Braids ($290) A new wig ( $65 – $700) A sew-in weave ($75 – $250) …and many more. The problem is my hair... Read more

If like me, you want to kill google for shutting down our beloved Picnik read this…
Last updated on: February 7, 2012 at 4:27 pm By Grace Sandra
It’s true blogging friends, picnik is expiring on April 19th and I am having the STRONGEST EMOTIONAL RESPONSE EVER. Deep, deep breath. I can’t tell if it’s because a BIG company bought out a LITTLE company and then shut it down like a bad habit or if I’m just deeply saddened at the loss of the best online photo editing software that was easy to use and remarkably cheap at $25 per year. Sigh and double sigh. After much heart-felt... Read more

Trend Alert: RED!
Last updated on: February 6, 2012 at 8:12 pm By Grace Sandra
Y’all know I’m sort of obsessed with red, right? I don’t wear a lot of red, but suffice it to say I’ve overdone it with the accessories: red winter pea coat, red ballet flats, red heels (two pairs), red purses (two), red laptop case, red tights red key cover, rolling red laptop bag, red wallet, red/white polka dot iphone case, red/white polka dot bathing suit. It’s out of control, y’all. (I LOVE IT!!!!!!!) Red speaks to me. It says, “Grace... Read more

Blockbusta, Blockbusted Blockbuster. Adapt or Die.
Last updated on: February 3, 2012 at 7:14 am By Grace Sandra
As I was driving past our local Blockbuster last night, I felt a tinge of sadness at their closing. We too, abandoned them in favor of Netflix even though at some point I swore I wouldn’t. (more…) Read more

Why should we celebrate Black History Month?
Last updated on: February 2, 2012 at 2:29 pm By Grace Sandra
Why not? I’m always a little surprised when a -very brave- white person will say something to me along the lines of “why is there a black history month?” While I’m sometimes surprised, the questions are welcomed. In my work with many black and white college students over the last 14 years I’ve learned that white people don’t have enough safe spaces among blacks to ask what can be perceived as the “dumb questions,” and blacks don’t have enough soul...
