Do you know what your boobs are worth??? The Cleavage Conundrum, Part 1 2010-10-28T22:41:30-04:00 Grace Sandra

Interestingly enough this poster of the cleavage of a pink puppet was originally made to promote a stage performance before it got banned from the billboards of Denver, Colorado. Pink puppet boobs got banned yet we all -seemingly- rejoice in our ability to use our breasts to get what we want. Feels like a really weird double standard to me.
Men, be forewarned: This is a post for the ladies! =)
On campus tonight I saw a young girl -likely a freshman- with her boobs hangin’ all over the place. She also looked a tad bit high. We were waiting in line at Taco Bell together and so I very nearly grabbed her by the shoulders, looked her dead in her eyes and said, “do you know what your boobs are worth?
I wanted to tell her to put them away because they are not worthy of the guy behind the counter that I watched practically drooling over them while she chatted on her cell phone. And we can all be certain, he wasn’t the only one looking at them as she walked through the Bernhard Center.
I said nothing. Instead I stood there deep in thought and troubled.
In some ways, I want to be reasonable about this whole cleavage issue: let’s face it, boobs are a dime a dozen, every 2nd person in the world has a pair so what is the big deal if this freshman girl lets them hang out?
On the other hand, who should get to see your boobs? In their entirety or in part? My personal beliefs are that the boobs are for the glorious act of marriage -i.e. gettin’ bizzay- and shouldn’t be cheapened by letting them hang out whenever they please.
I know, I know I sound like a big old prude.
Oh well.
I know boobs are EVERYWHERE, and my little blog post here isn’t going to change the world of cleavage as we know it…
…and I know that everywhere you look you are getting advice about make your boobs look bigger! “more sexy!” “more appealing to men!”
…and I know you can all invest in products like this to help you on your cleavage journey, should you choose…
So what. That doesn’t mean I cannot -or should not- add my .2cents to the matter.
Therefore, I present an alternative perspective…
I’ve given some thought to this over years, but tonight sparked my interest in the subject anew. Seein’ that po’ freshman hangin’ out all over the place really made me sad for her.
For me, even pre-Jesus-in-my-life I thought showing cleavage was uber-tacky. Of course pre-Jesus I had a pretty killer bod and I didn’t need the cleavage to get what I wanted or to use my body to get the man I wanted.
That was then. (Sad, triflin’ then).
Now, I still think cleavage is fairly tacky, but I also believe a woman’s worth is far (far) beyond the ability to present a nice rack or not. For that reason, I choose not to show cleavage.
Ever.
If I do, trust me it’s on accident. If I do, it’s because I’m still learning how to accomodate the um, new cup sizes breastfeeding babies has given me! If I do, it’s because I’m in a bathing suit water ski-ing…and we all know that today’s modern bathing suits are not meant to hold you in while you are skipping across the water.
My point: it’s NOT intentional.
I may have body issues, but one thing is for sure: my worth is not all wrapped in showing men the badonka-donks.
Without giving an answers (today at least), here’s my questions:
1. What does it say about us when we use our boobs to garner attention?
2. What is the greatest asset that we have? Should our physical assets ever outshine our more beneficial gifts & abilities?
3. If we use our physical assets -our bodacious bosoms, say- to garner attention, love, stuff, money, etc. are there moral implications for using our sexuality for benefits?
Well, I’ll just leave it at that, and if you have a thought about the answer to those questions, leave it in the comments.
Any ways you have or have not used your cleavage? Leave it in the comments.
Any regrets about using or not using your cleavage? Leave it in the comments.
