Community, cosmopolitanism and co-existence. “Communion”, in both political theory and theology, names a special place of sharing, relationship, partnership, or fellowship that goes beyond mere integration or cooperation. But to what extent has the ideal of a “communion” beyond “union” taken root in the Europe of today? To what extent do Catholics and people of other religions help or hinder the realization of such eternal “European” ideals as freedom, equality, plurality, democracy, reason, and responsibility?
