Why are you so
enchanted by this world
when a mine of
gold lies within you?
~ Jalal ad-din Rumi
-Translated by Coleman Barks.
A beautiful quote for the start of Ramadan.
This week marks the beginning of Ramadan,
the holiest month in the Islamic calendar.
Ramadan marks the time when the Qur’an
was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.
This is a time of fasting and prayer,
a time for charity,
a time for introspection,
a time for going within to be
alone with God in your own heart,
and with community
in giving and sharing and loving.
The fasting is from more than just food and drink.
Traditionally the fasting is from
television and music and anything that
takes the senses outside.
“Then, the knower’s absence from everything that is not Allah
is in a special Presence (hadra), which is that of the Essence,
and which the Folk refer to as
the Presence of Omnipotence (jabarut).”
~Shaykh Muhammad al-Jamal
The Deeper Meaning behind the Pillars of Islam
Even if you are not a practicing Muslim, you can still observe this special time.
Here are some ways you can take advantage
of the holiness that is present in the air.
Spend extra time in meditation.
Make a daily dedication to God
and spend a little more time
listening to your deep heart.
Give a little extra in charity
or participate in a volunteer program.
Reduce the amount of food you eat
or television you watch
or anything that distracts you
from being inside.
Keep a journal and witness what happens
for you in this holy time.
You’re invited to share your ideas
and experiences in the comments below.
Wishing you a blessed Ramadan.
We had a great time with our LIVE Panel Discussion last Wednesday hosted right here on Essence of the One.
Stay tuned, because we’re working on setting up another one together for July, this time with members of our community who are involved in social justice and the legal fields.
