Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

Your task is not to seek for love,
but merely to seek and find
all the barriers that you have built against it.
~ Jalal ad-din Rumi
-Translated by Coleman Barks.
I like to follow this poem with
“and release those barriers
to be the love within you.”
It is the barriers to love
that keep us constricted in the finite realities
of our physical bodies and material world.
Releasing the barriers and
healing the wounds that they protect
can lead us to the truth
that lies underneath them.
The truth hidden inside
is the reality of your existence.
You are not your barriers,
your illnesses or your mistakes.
You are the treasure you are here to find
on the treasure hunt we call life.
“I was a hidden treasure
that longed to be known,
so I created the creation
so that through Me,
they can know Me.”
~Hadith al-Qudsi
This is why we are here.
When it is time to change course,
what some call waking up,
often an illness or injury,
or a challenge in relationship or finances –
some major life event will get our attention.
When a disease or discomfort comes
and we opt to treat symptoms
without addressing the root,
without releasing the barriers
that created the constriction and disease
to reunite consciously with the
treasure of love within –
anything short of this is not true healing.
This falls short of our purpose
for being in this material plane.
This is why we cannot heal
without addressing the spiritual,
without examining the purpose
for which we’ve come here.
When we release the barriers,
we find the love has been within
all along.
We are grateful to the challenges
that pointed us to the
truth of our existence
and reason for being.
They give us a gift
far more valuable than
any found in the material world.
They lead us to discover
a whole universe within.
