Book of Abraham Studies

Last updated on: August 26, 2013 at 4:48 pm   By William Hamblin

Since I’ve been discussing the Book of Abraham, it should be noted that the classic Maxwell Institute (pre-June 2012) strongly endorsed the historicity and authenticity of the Book of Abraham, as reflected in its support for the Institute’s “Book of Abraham Project.”   The current status of that project is unclear. Here’s a nice chronological bibliography of books and articles on the Book of Abraham: http://thebookofabraham.blogspot.com/p/bibliography.html FAIR has a good summary of the major issues here: http://en.fairmormon.org/Book_of_Abraham Read more

Catalyst Theory of the Book of Abraham

Last updated on: August 26, 2013 at 3:12 pm   By William Hamblin

I think it is worth noting an important distinction in the “Catalyst Theory.” Simply put, the Catalyst Theory posits that 1- the BOA as we have it in the PGP was not found anywhere on any of the JS papyri, surviving or lost. 2- JS received the papyri, became interested in Abraham, etc., and 3- thereupon received a unique revelation from God of the translation of an ancient authentic Abraham document = our Book of Abraham. Note that David Bokovoy... Read more

The Official Position is That There is No Official Position

Last updated on: August 26, 2013 at 12:47 pm   By William Hamblin

Blair Hodges has replied to my previous set of questions concerning his statement that “the Maxwell Institute as such has no official position on the Book of Abraham.”  I’ve reposted it here, since it is buried in an bunch of other comments and replies. Cynthia L. is correct when she says (below): “it looks like Blair Hodges was simply noting that just because MI publishes an author’s article, doesn’t mean that author speaks for MI or represents its official position. I understand... Read more

No official position?

Last updated on: August 25, 2013 at 5:23 pm   By William Hamblin

Here is an interesting statement from Blair Hodges that new Maxwell Institute “has no official position on the Book of Abraham” (posted on David Bokovoy’s Facebook page.) Blair Hodges Just to be clear: the Maxwell Institute as such has no official position on the Book of Abraham, and the articles from Gee and Muhlestein represent their own perspectives. The Institute welcomes a variety of perspectives on these things. This sort of vague statement naturally raises more questions that it answers: No... Read more
