Kiki Iriafen

A DC Sports Sensation!

Kiki Iriafen is one of the newest sensations, bringing excitement to Washington, DC sports. Like fellow competitor Jayden Daniels, Kiki hopes to ignite a fan base that’s used to winning championships.

That said, playing in a big media market comes with immense pressure. So how does Kiki manage the expectations that come with being a Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) star?

Below, I’ll discuss her struggles with self-confidence and how she’s overcoming them through faith and a sound mind. But first, I’ll highlight her background and journey to becoming a professional basketball player.

Upholding Nigerian Family Values in America

Kiki Iriafen’s Family

Okikiola Iriafen was born on August 26, 2003, in  California. She is the oldest daughter of Harrison and Yemi Iriafen. Harrison and Yemi are also the parents of Shuby and Oyinkan Iriafen.

Interestingly, Harrison and Yemi are from Nigeria and came to America before Kiki was born. Harrison has a background in agricultural science and provided for his family by working as a businessman. Yemi also supported her family as a home health consultant.

Along with her parents, Kiki and her siblings also rely on support from their maternal grandparents. Their grandfather, Segun Ogunsaju, is a professor, and their grandmother, Fadeke, worked at a college in Nigeria.

Their grandparents’ and parents’ professions provided the values they used to raise and guide Kiki and her siblings.  This explains why they embody hard work and academic excellence.

As the oldest daughter, granddaughter, sibling, and cousin, Kiki is a natural-born leader. She uses her leadership position to be a role model for her younger family members. Academically, she set a great example by graduating from Stanford in just three years.

Athletically, she set an example by achieving her dream of playing in the WNBA. Her sister Oyinkan is following in her footsteps as a basketball player. Likewise, her brother Shuby is trailblazing his own athletic path as a soccer player.

Destined for Fame & Wealth?

Though Kiki and her siblings work hard athletically and academically, they can’t take credit for their success. As a family that embraces Catholicism, they know everything they do is for God’s glory.

Kiki’s parents instilled this value in their oldest daughter by naming her Okikiola. Okikiola comes from the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria and means famous for wealth. Though Kiki doesn’t base her life on riches, the name Okikiola foreshadows the blessings she receives as she follows God’s plan.

Therefore, fans who follow Kiki on social media know she believes God has a plan for her life. This is because Jeremiah 29:11 is the first item listed at the top of her Instagram bio. This verse mentions how God has a plan to prosper, offer hope, and provide a future for his people.

In its proper context, the verse highlights a promise to the captive Israelites in Babylon despite their disobedience to God. Though spoken to a disobedient people, modern Christians quote this verse, understanding that God has good plans for those who obey him.

While this is true, Kiki probably didn’t expect God’s purpose for her destiny to come through basketball. After all, she didn’t start playing until the 9th grade. She credits her parents, huge Lakers fans, for encouraging her to play.

Kiki Iriafen Becomes a Basketball Star

Kiki Iriafen Falls in Love with the Game

Despite having her parents’ support, Kiki initially didn’t like playing basketball. It was difficult for her to learn the game while competing against opponents who’d been playing since elementary school.

Thankfully, this “delay” couldn’t stop her from pursuing the sport that would become her passion. Instead, she says the “delay” motivated her to practice as much as possible until she began falling in love with the game.

King Solomon would be proud of her diligence, knowing that work brings a profit, but talk leads to poverty. Kiki profits from her hard work by having a stellar high school career. In 121 games with the Harvard-Westlake Wolverines, she acquired

Along with these stats, she earned accolades like

A Student-Athlete Searching for Confidence

After high school, Kiki committed to play college ball for the Stanford Cardinal. She thought the transition from high school to college would be simple since she was a Harvard-Westlake star. In reality, she had to earn her spot with the Cardinal.

Not receiving sufficient playing time shook Kiki’s confidence. Thankfully, she focused on her interest outside of basketball to help her cope with this new reality.

Kiki’s experience reminds me of James 1:3, which mentions how the trials believers face test their faith and build perseverance. Building perseverance makes believers mature and complete.

Kiki’s maturity developed as she worked on her craft, displayed selflessness, and stayed prepared for playing opportunities. Her trial shows young athletes how to handle themselves when circumstances aren’t in their favor.

Kiki could’ve complained, acted selfishly, or quit due to a lack of playing time. Although quitting was an option, that would’ve ruined the chance to be a good leader for her teammates. Instead, maintaining a positive mindset while wrestling with self-confidence made her a leader and fan favorite among Cardinal faithful.

Kiki Iriafen College Stats & Accolades

After a rocky start with the Cardinal, Kiki went on to have a stellar college career. In 104 games, she earned

Along with these stats, Kiki also earned several accolades, including

Furthermore, Kiki made the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll list. She also graduated from Stanford in three years with a degree in Design and Medical Engineering.

After graduation, Kiki chose to get a master’s degree in entrepreneurship and innovation from the University of Southern California (USC). Though the Cardinal and Trojans are rivals, attending USC gave Kiki a chance to watch and help her younger sister, Oyinkan, develop her skills.

Transferring to USC also allowed her family to watch her compete. They were present to watch  many of her 35 games and acquire stats like

Additionally, she earned honors such as

The Mindset of a Mystic

A successful college career prompts the Washington Mystics to select Kiki with the 4th overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft.

While it was an exciting time, Kiki acknowledges she had to adjust to the professional style of play. This transition could’ve shaken her confidence, like moving from high school to college.

However, Kiki knows God hasn’t “given us a spirit of fear but of love, power, and a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).  This may explain why she’s invested in her mental health by hiring mental performance coach David Alayme.

Coach David gives her strategies to preserve her soundness of mind. One strategy is imagery journaling. Through imagery journaling, Kiki writes out what she wants to do during games. She says this journaling style helps her visualize scenarios that the brain can manifest because it can’t distinguish reality from what you say happened.

Additional Strategies Kiki Uses

Similarly, she preserves her mind by speaking positively. Proverbs 18:21 supports positive speaking, saying that life and death lie in the power of the tongue. By speaking positively, Kiki trains her mind to remain optimistic in adverse situations and believe that good will occur.

Another strategy Kiki uses is staying present, remembering where her feet are.  This removes the mental distractions of dwelling on bad plays or off-court issues. She also trains her mind by facing her weaknesses. For instance, she shoots less than 40% from the 3-point line in her career. Some athletes would abandon the three-point shot, suggesting it’s just not part of their game.

However, Kiki chose to face her fears and work with shooting coach Barbara Turner to build confidence. As a result, she improved from shooting 18.2% in 2025 to 34.9% during the 2026 season. With a 16.7% increase in one season, Kiki is on pace to become a 50% 3-point shooter by the 2029 season. She proves you can do anything if you put your mind to it.

Kiki Iriafen’s Pro Basketball Accolades

While her three-pointer is a work in progress, the rest of Kiki’s game makes her a force to reckon with. In nearly two seasons, she’s acquired the following stats

These stats have helped her earn accolades like the May 2025 WNBA Rookie of the Month. She’s also a 2-time WNBA All-Star and has been named to the AP All-Rookie Team. With two games left in the regular season and the 4th seed in the playoffs, the young star could lead the Mystics to another championship.

Along with the chance to win her first WNBA championship, Kiki recently won a gold medal with the USA Women’s National Team after going undefeated during the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Germany.

Furthermore, Kiki continues to improve her game and confidence competing in the Unrivaled league during the WNBA offseason. This dedication to her craft will continue to build Kiki’s confidence as she soars to new heights and competes against her idol, A’ja Wilson. Who knows, the Aces and Mystics may play in the WNBA finals one day!
