Angelic Beings in Pop Culture
Does the Entertainment Industry Really Understand?
Angelic beings are fascinating creatures that humans depict in a positive light. After all, sports teams like the Los Angeles Angels bear their name. Singers like Anita Baker and Richard Smallwood highlight their abilities in a symbolically romantic and spiritual way. Cartoons even show them standing on a human’s shoulder, encouraging them to make good choices.
But do entertainment platforms really provide an in-depth, accurate account of angels’ identities?
Below, I’ll provide a biblical account of these heavenly creatures, revealing their meaning, nature, and responsibilities. I’ll also highlight Be an Angel Day, its creator, and the inspiration behind this wholesome occasion.
A Biblical View of Angelic Beings
Explaining How These Creatures Came into Existence
Angelic beings, called angels, have a specific function within creation. To help readers understand this role, let’s examine the biblical meaning of the word angels.
Biblical scholars suggest that angels, in both Hebrew and Greek, mean messengers (Mal’akh and Aggelos). These messengers bring vital information to an individual or group.
In the Old Testament, an angel gives Samson’s parents instructions on how to raise him as a Nazarite. In the New Testament, an angelic being tells Joseph that Mary will have a son conceived by the Holy Spirit.
These examples reveal how these creatures aid imperfect beings. That said, they exist to be more than workers who tell humans what God says.
Nehemiah 9:6 shows angels exist to worship and praise their Creator. Similarly, John prophetically sees a host of angelic beings in heaven, prostrate before the Lord’s throne, proclaiming his worthiness.
Their worship is eternal, setting the stage for what believers will do once they enter heaven after death.
Comparing Angels & Humans
Since angelic beings model what reverencing God will look like in heaven, they aren’t to be worshipped. Anyone who attempts to do so is committing idolatry, putting angels before God.
Instead, angels are to point people to God. The angel Gabriel’s name reveals this since it means the Lord is my strength. Michael the Archangel’s name does the same since it means who is like the Lord.
Interestingly, it’s worship, or the desire to be revered like the Lord, that helps expose a similarity between angels and humans. God created both with free will, allowing them to surrender to or rebel against Him.
Lucifer proves this as he rebels against his Creator and takes a third of the angels with him when God casts him down to the earth. Consequently, Lucifer turns from a light-bearer to the princess of darkness.
As such, he and he’s former angels (now demons) thrive on tempting, oppressing, constantly accusing, and destroying humanity. Humans have the choice to yield to demonic influences or resist by accepting His son Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
Free will allows both humans and angels to choose to yield to or resist God. As created beings, neither is
- Omniscient.
- Omnipresent.
- Omnipotent.
- Eternal.
While angelic beings and humans share these commonalities, angels hold a higher ranking. This is because they are immortal. After all, they aren’t cursed by sin like humans
Unlike humans, angels can forgo studying history because they’re alive to witness it. Similarly, they can observe and predict human action because they’ve seen the behavior pattern before.
More About the Work of These Messengers
Additionally, angels are also stronger than people. Scripture shows angels can
- Close the mouths of lions (Daniel 6:22).
- Defeat demonic forces that try to hinder human prayers (Daniel 10:7-13).
- Move heavy stones from a tomb (Matthew 28:2).
- Overpower humans (Genesis 32:22-32).
- Unlock sealed prison gates (Acts 12:5-17).
By unlocking a sealed prison gate, the angel was freeing Peter from bondage for preaching the Gospel. Like the help Peter receives, angels serve humans in a variety of ways. In the book Concise Bible Doctrines, Dr. Elmer Towns highlights several ways angels minister to humans. These include
- Administering judgment (2 Samuel 24:15-18).
- Encouraging the downcast (Judges 16:12)
- Giving revelation (Matthew 1:20).
- Offering protection ( Genesis 19:11).
- Providing provision (1 Kings 19:8).
Along with revealing how angelic beings assist humans, Dr. Towns also reveals the angels’ role in Jesus Christ’s ministry. Angelic beings
- Predicted Christ’s birth ( Luke 1:30-33).
- Announced Christ’s birth (Luke 2:10-14).
- Warned Jesus’s parents about Herod’s murderous plot (Matthew 2:19-20).
- Ministered to Christ after he endured temptation (Mathew 4:11).
- Ministered after Jesus was betrayed by Judas ( Luke 22:43).
National Be An Angel Day
A Day to Mimic Angelic Beings
People can minister like and celebrate angelic beings on Saturday, August 22, 2026, through National Be An Angel Day. Jayne Feldman’s work as an author writing about angels inspired the day in August, 1993. Interestingly, she established this initiative as interest in angels was growing in America.
2026 marks the 33rd year people can mimic angelic beings by performing acts of kindness. These compassionate efforts can be spontaneous or intentional. Either way, the goal is to ease someone’s burden and uplift their spirit.
Scripture supports these acts as believers are encouraged to exhibit kindness, bear one another’s burdens, and aid the needy. Hebrews 10:24 also supports participating in this day as believers are urged to stir one another up to love and do good works.
This day of love and service isn’t limited to mature saints who’ve been serving God for decades. Children, teens, new converts, the differently abled, and the elderly can participate.
You can participate by doing acts of kindness like
- Assisting an elderly neighbor with yard work or house chores.
- Babysitting for single parents or couples who need a break.
- Complimenting someone.
- Paying for someone’s groceries or meal.
- Talking to and praying for an unhoused person.
- Visiting hospital patients.
- Volunteering with a church, nonprofit organization, or shelter.
Along with volunteering, you can also celebrate by ending the day watching Touched By An Angel. It’s a great show depicting how angelic beings help individuals enduring difficult circumstances.
However you participate, do so with Jesus Christ’s love, understanding that you may be entertaining angels unaware (Hebrews 13:2).
