Mookie Betts Draws Crowds
A Well-Known Name & Fan Favorite
Mookie Betts is a name Major League Baseball fans know well. As a Washington Nationals fan, I know his name helps the Dodgers draw huge crowds in Washington, DC.
I’m also aware he’s one of only 64 Black players listed on an active roster when the 2026 season began. This means he plays a key role in attracting more African Americans to the sport. While his reputation and rarity as a Black professional baseball player are impressive, it’s Mookie’s faith that stands out to me.
Below, I’ll reveal how Mookie demonstrates his religious beliefs on and off the field. But first, I’ll highlight Mookie’s upbringing and journey to the major leagues.
It Takes A Village…
Mookie Betts & His Parents
Markus Lynn (Mookie) Betts was born on October 7, 1992, in Nashville, Tennessee. He’s the only son of Willie Betts and Diana Collins.
To ensure his son had the best life possible, Willie worked as a railroad mechanical supervisor. He is also an Air Force veteran who served in the Vietnam War.
Mookie’s mother, Diana, also provided for the family by working for the Tennessee Department of Transportation. While the couple worked hard to provide a loving, stable environment for Mookie, they divorced when he was ten.
Thankfully, they didn’t let divorce hinder their willingness to put their son’s well-being first. Instead, they worked together to ensure they raised a respectable, hard-working young man.
One way they supported their son is by introducing him to and investing in his sports interests. This isn’t surprising, since Willie ran track and played basketball, while Diana is an avid bowler and a former softball player.
Diana used her softball experience to help her son learn the fundamentals of baseball at an early age. As a result, Mookie wanted to play for a Little League team when he was five.
Turning Rejection into Preparation
Unfortunately, Mookie’s journey into baseball mirrors King David’s, as three coaches rejected him because of his small, scrawny stature. But like King David, while those coaches judged his appearance, Diana understood God looks at the heart.
She used those coaches’ rejection as inspiration to start a baseball team. The team only won one game during their season. Ironically, the win was against a coach who disregarded Mookie.
They won because Diana instructed him to chase down every ball that was hit and get an out. That moment foreshadowed her son’s future success.
Along with Diana, Mookie credits his father Willie’s behind-the-scenes efforts, like taking him to practices. While there, Willie uses his railroad knowledge to protect parents from the elements with makeshift cooling and heating units.
Willie’s innovative mind enables him to teach his son how to be solutions-oriented. He also challenges him to learn how to do something so he’ll know what he needs to do at the right time.
Willie’s example mirrors Proverbs 22:6 from a practical standpoint, imparting the wisdom Mookie needed to excel in life.
Mookie Betts Becomes A Star
Mookie Betts, A Three-Sport Athlete
Interestingly, when Mookie was a baby, one would’ve thought Willie was preparing him for a basketball career. This is because he named his son after former National Basketball Association (NBA) guard Daron Oshay “Mookie” Blaylock.
After all, Betts would imitate both his father and eponym by playing basketball. As a point guard for the John Overton Bobcats, Mookie averaged the following stats in 32 games during his season year
- 14.4 points.
- 5.8 assists.
- 2.9 rebounds.
- 2.4 steals.
- 72% free-throw shooter.
- 38% three-point shooter.
These stats helped him earn accolades like
- District 12-AAA League MVP (2011).
- The Nashville, Tennessee Metropolitan Area 2011 Class AAA All-City Player of the Year.
- The 2011 Max Player of the Year.
- MVP of the 2010 District 12-AAA Tournament.
Along with helping the Bobcats excel in basketball, Mookie is also an avid bowler. He was named the 2010 Tennessee Boys Bowler of the Year with a high score of 290.
Though a great bowler and basketball player, Mookie pursues baseball. During his Junior year, he earned a .549 batting average with 24 steals, leading his team to an undefeated season.
As a senior, he continued to hit over .500 with a batting average of .509 and 30 steals. These stats allowed him to earn honorable mention on the Louisville Slugger High School All-American List.
Mookie’s work ethic also prompts colleges like Mississippi State University, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Tennessee to recruit him.
Mookie’s Time in the Minor League
He initially accepts a baseball scholarship from the Tennessee Volunteers, but Mookie rescinds the offer and joins the MLB draft. This turns out to be a wise decision as the Boston Red Sox select him with the 172nd pick in the 2011 MLB Draft.
However, he spends three seasons in the Minors before making his Major League debut. Overall, Mookie has six seasons of Minor League experience, including time spent recovering from injury.
As such, he earned the following batting statistics
- 1,321 plate appearances.
- 1,125 at-bats.
- 356 hits.
- .316 batting average.
- 164 RBI.
- 92 stolen bases.
- 74 doubles.
- 27 home runs.
- 10 triples.
Along with batting stats like ten triples, Mookie was also an excellent fielder. In both the minors and majors, he’s played as a second baseman, outfielder, and shortstop.
Since Mookie played most of his career as a second baseman, I’ll highlight his work at this position. As a second baseman, Mookie acquired the following stats in 230 games
- 1, 139 total chances.
- .972 fielding average.
- 483 putouts
- 624 assists.
- 32 errors.
Career Accolades with the Red Sox & Dodgers
Acquiring 32 errors didn’t overshadow Mookie’s overall effort in the Minors. So, after three seasons, he finally makes his professional debut with the Boston Red Sox on June 29, 2014.
Overall, he’s spent 13 seasons in the Majors, six with the Red Sox and seven for the Dodgers. To date, he’s earned the following batting stats during his career
- 1, 597 games.
- 7,220 plate appearances.
- 6,342 at-bats.
- 1,206runs.
- 1,827 hits.
- 304 Home runs.
- 947 RBI.
- 197 Stolen bases.
- .288 batting average
Fielding-wise, Mookie accomplished the following as a second baseman,
- 4,044 total chances.
- .987 fielding average.
- 3,059 putouts
- 931 assists.
- 54 errors.
Thanks to these stats, Mookie has accomplished feats like
- Acquiring 6 Gold Gloves.
- Becoming a 7x Silver Slugger.
- Being an 8x All-Star.
- Being the 2018 American League MVP Award recipient.
- Earning the 2018 TSN MLB Player of the Year Award.
- Winning 4 World Series.
He’s also the only player to win an MVP, Silver Slugger, Gold Glove, Batting Title, and World Series in the same season.
How Mookie Betts Displays His Faith
Through Adversity & Conduct
The stats and awards above show Mookie is blessed to have a glorious career every athlete desires. Though prosperous, success hasn’t shielded him from career adversity.
He’s had to endure adjusting to MLB life after his time in the Minors. He’s also overcome several injuries, including hip inflammation, fractured ribs, a broken left hand, a stomach virus, and an oblique strain.
The last two injuries mentioned occurred in 2025 and 2026. Consequently, he’s endured a career-low batting average and a hitting slump during the first part of the 2026 season.
Thankfully, he’s able to endure adversity because of his faith in Jesus Christ. While he’s not vocal about his religious beliefs, coaches and teammates acknowledge his humility, calming presence, and quiet leadership.
The star is also known for his faith on the field through consistency, grace, and gratitude. This is a notable approach since scripture teaches believers to walk worthy of their calling. The Bible also tells believers to be patient with others and give thanks in all circumstances.
Mookie Betts is Committed to Family
Off the field, Mookie represents Christ through his commitment to his wife, Briana, and their two children, Kylee and Kaj.
Though his children are young, he’s intent on being present, loving, and embracing the joys of fatherhood.
He credits his father, Willie, for teaching him these lessons. As his children grow, Mookie can use his father’s wisdom to guide them in accordance with Deuteronomy 6:1-9 and Proverbs 22:6.
Along with being loving parents, Mookie and Briana demonstrate their faith by supporting each other’s career endeavors. 1 Peter 3:1-7 encourages spouses to honor one another. Briana does this by cheering for her husband at his games and handling household responsibilities.
Mookie reciprocates Briana’s devotion by endorsing her lemonade company, Honee. Honee’s Blue Slugger Lemonade is available for purchase at Dodger Stadium.
Mookie Demonstrates Faith Through True Religion
Together, the couple also proves the sincerity of their faith through their love for community. James 1:27 suggests true religion involves caring for the less fortunate.
In response to James’ teaching, the couple started the 50/50 Foundation in 2021. The foundation exists to provide youth with services like mental health, nutrition, fitness, sports programs, academic challenges, and financial literacy.
In addition to performing charitable acts with Briana, Mookie also aids the community by
- Donating $30,000 worth of Nike apparel to assist victims of the Los Angeles Wildfires.
- Establishing youth sports and education programs in Nashville, Tennessee, and receiving athletic equipment from the Obama Foundation.
- Partnering with the Dodgers Foundation to donate $95,000 to the Brother Crusade to support the unhoused and hungry.
Furthermore, Mookie demonstrates his faith by making donations to Mt. Zion Nashville and publicly thanking God on social media.
Mookie’s charitable efforts have earned him recognition as the November 2020 Mt. Zion Hero of the Week. MLB also honored his efforts, awarding him the 2025 Roberto Clemente Humanitarian Award.
Mookie’s humanitarian work and quiet leadership show Christians how to practice their faith so others can glorify God. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father (Matthew 5:16, New Living Translation).
