Spiritual warfare relates to boxing in the sense that fighters must prepare and endure several rounds of fighting to be triumphant in their matches.

Spiritual Warfare

A Reality Everyone Must Face

Spiritual warfare is a reality that every human faces. Individuals who don’t believe in God or are skeptical about a higher power’s existence reject this idea. Instead, they may consider the hardships they experience as mere challenges or bad luck.

But for Christians, Scripture clearly teaches that an adversary is constantly fighting against us. So, how do we stand strong in this fight and walk in the victory Jesus Christ has already won for us by conquering sin, death, and hell?

Below, I’ll use Daniel chapters one and two to highlight how God prepares three Hebrew men for battle. Then, I’ll explain how believers can stand strong and rely on God’s promises to triumph over Satan’s schemes.

Preparation for Spiritual Warfare

Separation & Consecration

If you were raised in church, the story of the Hebrew men in Daniel chapter three may sound familiar.  You may remember details about changing laws, music, or a fiery furnace.

But do you know how specific instances in the opening chapters prepare them for spiritual warfare? If yes, then this section will serve as a refresher. If not, I’ll tell you.

In Daniel 1:4-7, readers meet Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, whose names become Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego while captive in Babylon. These four individuals are among many young men who spend three years consuming the language, literature, and food of Babylon. After this time, they’ll enter the royal service.

While entering the royal service is a prestigious honor, Daniel realizes eating Babylonian food will defile him. He knows Levitical laws forbid him from consuming the food and wine King Nebuchadnezzar serves.

So, he gets permission for Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah, and himself to eat vegetables and drink water. After ten days, their attendant sees they’re healthier and more nourished than their peers, so they continue this diet (Daniel 1:15-16). The four Hebrew men’s willingness to follow Levitical dietary customs shows they won’t let royal treatment compromise their faith.

Trusting Through Promotion

As a result, God rewards their devotion with the ability to understand all aspects of literature and wisdom. This divine wisdom allows the four Hebrew men to obtain favor with King Nebuchadnezzar, realizing they are wiser than everyone else in his kingdom.

Consequently, Daniel uses his wisdom to interpret the king’s dream and receives a promotion (Daniel 2:24-48). Daniel, now serving as ruler over the province of Babylon and the wise men, asks for his friends to be promoted as well Daniel 2:49). So, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are allowed to govern all of the affairs within the Province of Babylon.

While this is a celebratory moment, there is a lesson to learn about promotion that precedes spiritual warfare. As Christians, our wits and abilities are not what allow us to be elevated to higher levels of ministry or professional leadership.

Instead, we must remember that promotion doesn’t come from the east or west but from God. The Lord elevates whoever he chooses for a sovereign purpose, which becomes clearer by obeying His will.

Enduring the Unseen Battle

Testing Through Spiritual Warfare

Interestingly, elevation and obedience don’t mean life will be problem-free with no adversity. In fact, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego realize that promotion puts them in position to be tested through spiritual warfare.

Spiritual warfare arises as King Nebuchadnezzar forces everyone in Babylon to bow down to his golden statue (Daniel 3:1-5). Anyone who refuses to bow down will be thrown into the blazing furnace (Daniel 3:6).

Those unfamiliar with Israelite laws wouldn’t blame Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego for adhering to the king’s instruction. After all, their lives are on the line.

However, if they appease King Nebuchadnezzar, they’ll be committing idolatry, which violates the Ten Commandments. So now their faith is undergoing testing as they must choose to obey God despite death threats or save themselves through compromise.

Thankfully, they stand firm, believing God is able to deliver them from the fire (Daniel 3:17). They make an even bolder declaration of faith, saying that even if God doesn’t deliver them, they will not worship the golden statue. I believe they make this declaration remembering how God blessed them with wisdom and the King’s favor when they were trainees.

Their example shows that amid spiritual warfare, we must be willing to trust in and respect God’s sovereignty regardless of the cost. Their persecution also proves that God is faithful and present with believers as we’re being tested by fire.

Facing Spiritual Warfare with God’s Armour

Along with the assurance of God’s presence, I’d like to highlight other promises that can strengthen Christians in battle. But first, let’s look at the armour Paul, the apostle, says we can use to stand strong like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.

(Side note: the Hebrew men’s persecution happens before Paul’s letter mentioning God’s armour. I’m simply highlighting how each piece of armour applies to their situation).

The first piece of armour is the belt of truth. The three Hebrew men stand on the truth of God’s commands by choosing to worship the Lord our God alone.

They also embrace the truth by not changing what they know about God despite their circumstances. Similarly, believers must know that God is still good and worthy of our worship despite the intimidating temptations we face.

As believers, we can develop this mindset by wearing the breastplate of righteousness. Daniel,  Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego put on this equipment by choosing not to defile themselves with the king’s goods. They make this choice knowing they could not eat certain foods or drink wine Jews did not prepare.

Therefore, they pass spiritual warfare’s test by remaining sober-minded, uninfluenced by Babylonian culture. Their sober thoughts compel them to obey the Lord.

We must imitate the Hebrew men’s actions by being blameless, unspotted by the world, and at peace with God before battle so we can endure during combat.

The ability to endure during combat comes from the shoes of the Gospel of peace. The three Hebrew men demonstrate peace by not showing fear when King Nebuchadnezzar threatens their lives. They also demonstrate peace by marching around the fire with the Son of Man.

Likewise, we must not fear threats when engaging in spiritual warfare, knowing that to live is Christ but to die is gain. We can “walk around” in fire situations knowing that whether we live or die, we have victory through Jesus Christ.

Three More Pieces to Fight Against Spiritual Warfare

Believing we have victory through Jesus Christ comes through having faith that he offers us salvation and eternal life. Similarly, the three Hebrew men had to use faith as a shield to keep them from doubting God amid persecution.

Their faith helps them remain confident that the Lord is greater than any other king and can deliver them from death. They also remain confident in God despite being captives in a foreign kingdom who’ve lost

Even with such loss, their devotion to God was unwavering, though conforming could have gotten them the best Babylon had to offer. From their devotion, we see that the shield of faith will protect us from the fiery darts of being tempted to

The Hebrew men reject Babylon’s worldly pleasures through the Helmet of Salvation. They understand that their eternal fate is in God’s hands. I believe, whether in survival or death, they know their sovereign, faithful God will honor their devotion in paradise.

Christians too must remember that we have eternal life through Jesus Christ, who’ll welcome us into heaven for placing our faith in him. We discover that we have eternal life through Jesus Christ by reading the Bible, the Sword of the Spirit.

Triumphant Over Spiritual Warfare

Promises to Strengthen Christian Soldiers

The Sword of the Spirit contains many promises that can help believers remain faithful to God. We can stay loyal to the Lord while enduring persecution by

These verses and the Hebrews men’s conduct show that believers can endure spiritual warfare through unity.

Lastly, we can hold fast to 1 Peter 1:6-9, which suggests fiery trials determine if our faith is genuine. This passage also says that those who trust God in trials will receive the salvation of their souls.

Remaining Faithful to God

Because of the three Hebrews’ faithfulness, King Nebuchadnezzar issues a decree declaring that no one shall speak ill of the Lord God. He also declares that no god can rescue like the Lord, God of Israel.

The King’s testimony shows that God allows Christians to experience spiritual warfare to make his name known among non-believers.

Interestingly, in Daniel 6:1-28, Daniel also faces spiritual warfare for refusing to pray to King Darius. Consequently, God allows Daniel to be thrown in a lion’s den.

However, an angel prevents the lions from devouring him. As a result, King Darius declares that the nation shall worship the Lord God of Israel alone.

Daniel’s trial teaches modern Christians that we must stand strong amid spiritual warfare so others can receive salvation. Though trying in the moment, how we handle spiritual persecution could affect someone’s willingness to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

Therefore, we can be triumphant in spiritual warfare by remaining faithful to God, knowing he’s using our lives and circumstances for his glory.

“In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation” (1 Peter 5:10, New Living Translation).
