Steph Curry
A Doubted Game-Changer?
Steph Curry is one of the best basketball players ever to step foot on the court. Like any phenomenal athlete, his skill set helped usher in the next evolution of the game.
So why has Steph been doubted throughout much of his career? Why isn’t he usually mentioned in GOAT conversations like Michal Jordan, Kobe, and LeBron?
Below, I’ll explain why people doubted Steph by highlighting his career and family background. I’ll also explain how his faith has empowered him to become a giant slayer for God’s glory.
The Curry Family’s Faith & Athleticism
Steph Curry’s Parents & Siblings
Wardell Stephen Curry was born on March 14, 1988, in Akron, Ohio. He is the son of Dell and Sonya Curry. Dell and Sonya also have another son, Seth, and a daughter, Sydel.
Interestingly, Dell and Sonya share a love of sports and a Christian faith that shaped their children’s lives. Sonya is a Virginia Tech Hokie who excelled in volleyball and later started a Christian Montessori School.
Her daughter Sydel followed in her footsteps, playing volleyball at Elon University. Currently, Sydel is a digital content creator, podcast host, and mental health advocate.
Like Sonya, Dell is a fellow Hokie and Christian who spent sixteen years in the NBA. His sons, Seth and Steph, have followed the path he trailblazed, with both playing over a decade in the league.
As Christians, Stephen’s parents raised their children according to Proverbs 22:6. Christian values manifest in Stephen’s life by attending Christian schools throughout his upbringing. Additionally, at 14, Steph decided to accept Jesus as his Lord and Savior.
Thanks to this decision, Steph chooses to anchor his life on Philippians 4:13. Here, Paul declares, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Paul makes this declaration amid adverse circumstances. Similarly, Steph has relied on Paul’s words to overcome the challenges of being a professional athlete.
Steph Curry Becomes a Giant-Slayer
So how did Steph go from being known as the son of an NBA player to starring in the league? One way is enjoying the privilege of being a ball boy for the Charlotte Hornets during his dad’s home games. As such, he had opportunities to practice against well-known athletes and didn’t back down.
Another way involves his competitive relationship with his brother Seth. The two competed in everything they did, which often led to fights. Thankfully, their adolescent years provided a healthy sibling rivalry that proves “iron sharpens iron” (Proverbs 27:17, New International Version).
Battling with Seth and other professional athletes became the training ground God used to prepare Steph for his future. He didn’t know it then, but these experiences helped him become a giant slayer in defining moments of his career.
Similarly, a young King David became a giant slayer by protecting his sheep from lions and bears. But unlike King David, Steph had to slay the giants of self-doubt and lack of confidence in his abilities.
This happened when he attended basketball camps for some of the best high school players in the country. That’s when he realized he was just as good as his peers.
This newfound confidence helped Steph become a dominant force at Charlotte Christian School
- Becoming the school’s all-time leading scorer with over 1,400 points.
- Averaging 18 points per game.
- Averaging 48% from the 3-point line.
Off the court, he also lettered in golf and track and field.
Steph Curry’s College & NBA Accolades
Steph Curry with the Davidson Wildcats

After a great high school career, Steph desired to follow in his parents’ footsteps by attending Virginia Tech. Unfortunately, the Hokies didn’t offer Steph a scholarship.
Thankfully, Davidson offered him a scholarship. Stephen believes the scholarship offer is evidence of God’s divine providence since Coach Bob McKillop is a Christian.
During his time with the Wildcats, he acquired the following collegiate career totals in 104 games
- 2,635 points.
- 388 assists.
- 221 steals.
- 28 blocks.
- 87.6% free-throw shooter (479/547).
- 46.7% field goal shooter (871/1,866).
- 41.2% three-point shooter (414/1,004).
As a result of these stats, Stephen earned scoring accolades like
- 1st All-time in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 3-pointers made in a season (162).
- 1st in 3-pointers made per game in the NCAA as a sophomore with 4.50 per game.
- Leading the NCAA in scoring in 2009 with 28.6 points per game.
Naturally, this comes as no surprise since Stephen’s scoring helped him be a giant slayer during the 2007-08 NCAA Tournament. He led the Wildcats to the Elite Eight, beating powerhouse schools like Gonzaga, Georgetown, and Wisconsin.
As a result of these victorious efforts, helped him earn awards like
- Southern Conference Rookie of the Year (2006-07).
- Southern Conference All-Freshman (2006-07).
- NCAA All-Region (2007-08).
- 2x Southern Player of the Year.
- 2x Consensus All-American.
- 3x All-Southern Tournament.
After his junior year, Stephen left college, later finishing his sociology degree in 2022. Davidson honored his athletic success by retiring his #30 jersey and inducting him into their Hall of Fame in 2022.
The Golden State Warriors Shooting Star
After his departure from Davidson, Steph declared for the NBA Draft. As a result, the Golden State Warriors selected him with the 7th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft.
Through 1,069 regular season games, Steph acquired the following stats:
- 26,528 points.
- 6,743 assists.
- 1,602 steals.
- 828 rebounds.
- 282 blocks.
- 47.1% field goal shooter (9,022/19,155).
- 42.2% 3-point shooter (4,248/10,073).
- 91.2% free-throw shooter (4236/4645).
Additionally, in 155 playoff games, Steph continued his stellar play with
- 4,147 points.
- 953 assists.
- 828 rebounds.
- 231 steals.
- 50 blocks.
- 88.9% free-throw shooter (721/812).
- 45.4% field goal shooter (1,388/3,056).
- 39.7% 3-point shooter (650/1,637).
Such a performance in the playoffs allowed him to win 4 NBA championships, two with fellow star Kevin Durant. He’s also an Olympic gold medalist, thanks to making key shots during the 2024 Paris Games Final against France.
Along with obtaining trophies and gold medals, Stephen has also won awards like
- Being the NBA’s all-time leader in three-pointers made with 4, 248.
- Becoming a 12x NBA All-Star.
- Becoming a 2x scoring champion, MVP, and All-Star MVP.
- Being named 11x All-NBA.
- Being named to the NBA 75th Anniversary team.
- Earning the 2021-22 Finals MVP and Western Conference Finals MVP.
- Obtaining the 2015-16 Steals title.
As he enters his eighteenth season, Steph hopes to further cement his legacy with a chance to compete for another championship.
