Bukayo Saka
A Name Unknown to Me
Bukayo Saka is a name that I’m unfamiliar with. As an individual who doesn’t watch soccer (futbol), I am unaware of the popular teams and players in the sport.
However, after a brief search of Christians participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, I came across Bukayo’s name.
Below, I’ll reveal what I know about him by discussing his background and journey to futbol stardom. I’ll also highlight the career accomplishments he’s earned and how the power of faith manifests through his life.
The Saka Family
Bukayo Saka’s Parents & Brother
Bukayo Ayoyinka Temidayo Moses Saka was born on September 5, 2001, in London, England. His first name means adds to happiness which he did after his parents, Yomi and Adenike, brought him into the world.
Along with Bukayo, the couple also has an older son named Abayomi. Yomi and Adenike are from the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria, but moved to England in search of a better life for their family.
They do so with Yomi working as a businessman. Adenike also supports the family by using her accounting degree to serve as an accountant for O2.
Their work ethic and educational backgrounds compel Yomi and Adinike to teach their sons three core values
- Respect.
- Academic excellence.
- Faith.
A Father’s Inspiration
Before detailing the role respect, academic excellence, and faith play in Bukayo’s life today, let’s take a brief look at his greatest inspiration.
Bukayo, also known as “starboy,” began playing football at an early age. One day, while completing 50 keepie-upies in the back garden, he accidentally broke the neighbor’s wooden fence.
Consequently, his father says he could no longer practice in the garden. However, he recognizes both Bukayo’s passion and potential to become a good football player. So after some advice from a relative, Yomi allows Bukayo to try out for different football clubs.
After trying out with different clubs, including his brother’s team, Watford, Bukayo joined Arsenal at the age of eight. Yomi congratulates and supports his son by buying him a jersey featuring the name King Kayo.
Bukayo initially worried that wearing the jersey would make him seem arrogant. But for Yomi, the jersey symbolizes his approval and confidence in his son’s potential for greatness.
Yomi also voices his confidence during a Newcastle match, telling Bukayo he could be like the players they were watching on the pitch one day. His father even drove nearly two hours both ways to get Bukayo to and from practices.
Yomi’s confidence shows football fans the importance of a father’s presence in a child’s life. Without Yomi’s guidance, Bukayo would have never reached his full potential or fulfilled his divine purpose.
Proverbs 22:6 supports this view, encouraging parents to train their children in the way they should go so when they get old they won’t depart from it. Similarly, Proverbs 29:17 urges fathers to discipline their sons because it will give them rest and delight in their hearts.
Bukayo Saka Learns 3 Core Values
For Yomi and Adenike, discipline wasn’t a form of punishment for their sons. Instead, it was about laying a foundation for their boys to build their character and lives upon.
This is evident in the three previously mentioned core values of respect, academic excellence, and faith. Respect is evident with praise from commentators, coaches, and teammates for Bukayo’s politeness and joyful demeanor.
YouTube commenters are also impressed with his humility. They appreciate how he considers everyday items like Twix and cocoa butter essential rather than material goods that flaunt his wealth.
Likewise, academic excellence is a non-negotiable since the Sakas wanted to ensure their sons were as committed to school as they were to futbol.
Bukayo proves his commitment by earning 4 A•s and 3 A’s in his GCSEs. This is the English equivalent of earning A+s and A’s in America. Bukayo uses his thirst for knowledge and his business interests to establish a partnership with Nando’s. Through their collaboration, he has a signature sauce called Perri Perri Saka.
Living By Faith
While having an admirable personality and business knowledge are great, they cannot sustain a person through life’s trials and temptations. Knowing this, Bukayo’s parents taught their sons how to live by faith.
For the Sakas, living by faith occurs through spiritual disciplines such as prayer. Their religious beliefs not only structured how Bukayo lived with his parents but also govern his life today.
In fact, he’s unashamed to share his faith in God with the world. He also considers his religious convictions essential because they affect every part of his life.
He defines faith as believing no matter what and focusing on your beliefs regardless of what you see. 2 Corinthians 5:7 aligns with this notion, saying, “ we walk by faith and not by sight.”
Bukayo doesn’t just talk about faith or believing in the Lord. He exercises his faith by striving to read scripture nightly. He also demonstrates his faith during his pregame routine, asking God to bless, protect, and allow His will to be done.
It’s Faith for Bukayo Saka
Additionally, Bukayo represents Jesus Christ on the pitch by drawing a cross on his left wristband. This same gesture is done by Christian athletes like Washington Commanders Quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Like Daniels, Bukayo’s faith in God has been a part of his journey from the beginning. It’s faith that leads his parents to give him a name resembling the joy and happiness he brings to others.
Sarah has a similar testimony about having to believe God for her son Issac, whose name means laughter. Faith also compels Yomi to tell Bukayo that he could play professionally while attending a Newcastle match.
Furthermore, it’s faith that empowers Bukayo to
- Embrace his identity as God’s child.
- Believe he could play professionally for Arsenal as he walked past Thierry Henry’s picture every day.
- Overcome missing a match-tying penalty kick against Italy in the Euro 2020 Tournament.
- Endure racist backlash as a result of the loss against Italy.
- Face adversity and overcome injuries.
- Model 1 Timothy 4:12, setting a good example for young supporters.
- Exhibit 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 as he pursues a heavenly crown that this world can’t take away.
These examples show the power of faith and believing in God, who promises to reward those who diligently seek him.
Bukayo Saka Rewarded for His Faith
A Future Wife & Stellar Career
For Bukayo, his reward comes in two aspects. The first is his stellar reputation and his relationship with his fiancée, Tolami Benson. The couple has been dating since, and Tolami is seen at Arsenal matches wearing his kit. Their relationship and soon-to-be union are the result of a man who is faithful to and has found favor with God.
Along with finding God’s favor through his future wife, Bukayo is also blessed with a stellar football career. He’s privileged to play in many matches for Arsenal and the England National team.
However, because football contains several league and cup matches, I’ll only mention career stat totals from the FIFA World Cup and the English Premier League. Click here to see Bukayo’s stats across all leagues and matches.
Bukayo Saka Premier League & FIFA World Cup Stats
Bukayo Saka with Arsenal in 2025

Currently, the England National team is preparing to take on Croatia in their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match. The match will take place on June 17 in Boston Stadium at 4:00 PM.
Since Bukayo and England are seeking their first FIFA World Cup Trophy since 1963, let’s take a look at his previous performance.
Bukayo’s only other appearance in this tournament came in the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup. Here, Bukayo played in matches and acquired the following stats
- 288 minutes.
- 3 goals.
- 5/7 goals on target.
- 71% goals on target.
- 2 assists.
- 4 tackles won.
- 2 interceptions.
- 6 fouls drawn
- 7 fouls committed
- 0 yellow cards.
- 0 red cards.
Thanks to these stats, Bukayo has a 2-1-1 record in the World Cup to date.
In addition to competing with the England National Team, Bukayo also plays for Arsenal in the Premier League. With his help, Arsenal finished first in the Premier League and are league champions.
Furthermore, Bukayo is the second youngest player with 50 goals and 50 assists. He accomplished this feat at 24 years and 255 days old, while Wayne Rooney holds this record at 24 years and 84 days old.
Along with reaching 50 goals and 50 assists at a young age, Bukayo also has the following Premier League stats in 226 matches
- 17, 343minutes.
- 60 goals..
- 174/505 goals on target.
- 34.5% goals on target.
- 50 assists.
- 164 tackles won.
- 106 interceptions.
- 378 fouls drawn
- 220 fouls committed
- 28 yellow cards.
- 0 red cards.
Other Notable Accolades and Closing Remarks
Lastly, an athlete of Bukayo’s stature should have notable accolades. Bukayo’s accolades include being a
- PFA Young Player of the Year (2022-2023).
- Consecutive Arsenal Player of the Season Awards (2020-2021, 2021-2022).
- FA Cup Winner (2020).
- 2x Super Cup Winner (2020-2021, 2023-2024).
These awards validate the dedication Bukayo gives to his craft. But he knows that success wouldn’t be possible without the Heavenly Father’s guidance. He also knows his playing football at the highest level brings glory and honor to the Most High. May the Lord continue to bless Bukayo as he places his faith in Him and leads his teams to victory.
“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful” (Hebrews 10:23, New King James Version).
