Caleb Downs
A College Football Fan Favorite
Caleb Downs is a name college football fans know well. That’s because he’s spent the past three seasons making key plays for his teams.
While his play on the field is exceptional, it’s his character off the field that makes him incredible. So what’s the foundation that’s helped mold Caleb into the man he is today?
Below, I’ll reveal the instrumental role family and faith play in Caleb’s life. I’ll also reveal that this foundation empowers and paves the way for him to excel in the National Football League (NFL).
The Downs from Houschton, Georgia
Caleb Downs Parents and Siblings
Caleb Downs was born on December 10, 2004, in Houschton, Georgia. He is the youngest son of Tanya and Gary Downs Jr. The couple also has two other children, their oldest daughter, Kameron, and their son Joshua.
Joshua, Kameron, and Caleb have become well-respected individuals who’ve made their parents proud. Kameron played soccer for years at Kennesaw State and currently attends Medical School at Wake Forest University.
Joshua also attended college in North Carolina, playing with the University of North Carolina Tar Heels for three seasons. After his junior season, Joshua was selected as a third-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2023 NFL Draft. Joshua is heading into his fourth season with the Colts.
Like Joshua, Caleb gets selected during the 2026 NFL Draft. But since he’s the focal part of this article, let’s examine how this generation of Down’s children has become who they are today.
Faith, Family & Football
If you ask Caleb and his siblings, I’m sure they’ll give all the credit to God, their parents, and extended relatives.
After all, their father, Gary, was drafted by the New York Giants in 1994, and his career spanned five years. Then he began coaching and is currently a recruiter for Excel Sports Management, an FCA Representative, and CEO of Trust Downs Foundation.
While Gary enjoys sharing his faith and knowledge of football with others, he makes his family his first ministry.
Athletically, this manifests through making his kids run and work out in the mornings. Spiritually, this occurs by always reminding his children to keep God first by giving Him due praise and never stealing His glory.
Similarly, his wife, Tanya, has helped and continues to help ensure that Caleb and his siblings remain grounded in their faith. She’s also passionate about sports, having played soccer in high school.
While passionate about her faith in Jesus Christ and sports, Tanya is also serious about academics. As a high school calculus teacher, good grades were non-negotiable for Tanya’s children. This standard helps Caleb and his siblings maintain great grades throughout their academic journey.
Along with Tanya and Gary, Caleb also pays homage to his grandfather for helping shape who he’s become. As a military veteran, Gary Down Sr. serves as a source of direction while instilling a sense of discipline and work ethic that his entire family emulates.
Proverbs 17:17 Personified
In addition to his faith, discipline, and work ethic, Caleb credits his order siblings for his competitiveness. His sister Kameron jokingly admits she thought the athletic success he experienced at a young age would eventually shift to him being just average.
Thankfully, her prediction was incorrect, as Caleb will be joining Joshua in the NFL. While excited to be achieving his dream with his brother, Caleb can’t wait to slam his brother on the field.
Off the field, the two exhibit a strong bond that brings Proverbs 17:17 to life. The two share equal excitement for each other’s draft nights and professional careers. Joshua is also a strong influence on Caleb’s decision to transfer from Alabama to Ohio State after Nick Saban retired.
Additionally, the two host the Downs 2 Business podcast. Here, the two have an opportunity to talk sports with one another and fellow athletes. They also end each episode with a devotional, which proves they don’t just claim to be Christians but understand God’s word.
A Faithful Man with an Old Soul
The Name Caleb Means
In the Old Testament, God’s word suggests the name Calev (Hebrew for Caleb) represents someone faithful when others are fearful. Caleb lives up to this name by being unashamed of the Gospel and the name of Jesus. This boldness comes from his father’s admonition never to steal God’s glory and from his personal relationship with the Lord.
Caleb’s boldness also gave him the chance to speak during a revival that the OSU football team has been leading on campus for a few years.
A Young Man with an Old Soul
Along with publicly proclaiming the Gospel and the name of Jesus, Caleb exhibits his faith through pregame rituals. He listens to sermons by Darryl Bronner and artists like Kirk Franklin and Marvin Sapp.
When I first heard about his taste in music, I thought, “This young man has an old soul.” His uncle, former NFL Corner Dre Bly, shares similar thoughts, acknowledging that Caleb plays football like players from his time in the league.
Hearing this, it’s no surprise Caleb’s top five players are
- Charles Woodson.
- Troy Polamalu.
- Ronnie Lott.
- Brian Dawkins.
- Ed Reed.
Caleb Downs Road to the NFL
NFL Draft Prospect
Caleb isn’t the only one who thinks his playing style resembles Ed Reed’s. Speak Easy co-host and Bengals wide receiver TJ Houshmandzadeh also makes the comparison. Fellow co-host Emmanuel Acho believes his high IQ and skill set make him the best player in the draft.
NFL analyst Lance Zerlin also has high regard for Caleb, calling him “an alpha who brings the juice to every snap.” Lance suggests NFL scouts believe he possesses these strengths
- A quick finisher who limits yards after catch.
- Discipline in processing passing routes.
- Disruptive at the line of scrimmage.
- Plays with great awareness.
- Proactive in run support.
While being proactive in run support and disruptive at the line are great assets for any defense, Caleb does have weaknesses.
Caleb’s weaknesses include
- Focusing more on the receiver than the football on pass plays.
- Lacking the strength to defend jump balls.
- Inconsistencies with wrapping and running through tackles.
That said, tackling and coverage concerns didn’t stop the Dallas Cowboys from selecting him with the 11th pick in the 2026 Draft.
Caleb Downs High School Stats
I believe the Cowboys trust in Caleb’s overall resume rather than being deterred by weaknesses that can be strengthened over time.
Caleb’s resume includes a high school career with the Mill Creek Hawks, where he played baseball, basketball, and football. He played fifty-one games for the Hawks and acquired the following defensive stats
- 269 total tackles.
- 249 interception yards.
- 43 passes defended.
- 19 interceptions.
- 1 forced fumble.
- 1 fumble recovery.
- 1 interception return for a touchdown.
- 1 tackle for loss.
- 1 sack.
Offensively, Caleb acquired
- 648 rushing yards for 27 touchdowns.
- 64 passing yards with 2 touchdowns.
- 47 receptions for 569 yards and 6 touchdowns.
Caleb also added 269 kickoff return yards and 248 punt return yards. These stats helped him become a
- Four-time player of the game.
- 2020 All-American First Team Defense selection.
- 2020 All-State 2nd Team Defense.
Caleb Downs at Alabama & Ohio State
Being an All-State 2nd Team selection and First Team All- American, gave Caleb the chance to commit to Alabama. During his freshman season with the Crimson Tide, Caleb played fourteen games, acquiring
- 107 total tackles.
- 4 passes defended.
- 2 Interceptions.
- 1 Forced Fumble
- 1 Fumble Recovery.
He also has 110 all-purpose returning yards with 1 return touchdown with the Crimson Tide. Despite a productive season with the Crimson Tide, Caleb chose to transfer to OSU after head coach Nick Saban retired. As an OSU Buckeyes Safety, Caleb accomplished the following in 30 games,
- 150 combined tackles.
- 8 passes defended.
- 4 Interceptions.
- 2 Forced Fumbles.
Along with 2 forced fumbles as a defender, Caleb also had 6 punt returns for 98 yards and 1 touchdown.
Thanks to this effort, Caleb won awards like
- Being named a 2x All-American (Alabama 2023-2024, OSU 2024-2025).
- Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year (2025).
- Lott Trophy (2025).
- The National Championship (2025).
- The Paycom Jim Thorpe Trophy (2025).
A Final Word for Caleb Downs
Remain Steadfast in Your Faith
Before the 2025 National Champion and newest Dallas Cowboy officially starts his NFL career, I have some advice. Being selected by Dallas, whose record in 2025 was 7-9-1, which means the Cowboys are struggling. Caleb will be entering a new culture that isn’t accustomed to the winning he’s accustomed to.
Therefore, I encourage him to continue depending on God. Doing so will help him endure potential adversity such as a losing season, injury, and the need to adapt to new roles and playing styles.
These challenges can discourage the most mature Christian. That said, Caleb must trust that whatever trials arise, God will bring him through the fire as pure gold.
Along with being refined by the fire of adversity, continuing to depend on God will help him maintain a good reputation. This is important because the fame and notoriety that come with being an NFL athlete could make anyone prideful. Caleb can resist this temptation by continuing to display the same humility and willingness to glorify amid success as he did at OSU.
Lastly, as a courageous man of faith, he must remember he’s setting an example for other Christian athletes. So, he should heed 1 Timothy 4:12 and represent Christ through his word, conduct, love, spirit, faith, and purity.
While such an expectation can be tough to handle, Caleb isn’t bearing this responsibility alone. Athletes like CJ Stroud and Joshua Downs are representing Jesus Christ in the NFL.
This is proof that the Gospel will continue to go forth as long as athletes like Caleb Downs continue to stand strong.
