200 Years of Modern Greatness: Happy Birthday to all of Hellas

Last updated on: March 25, 2021 at 7:31 pm   By John Mark N. Reynolds

Two hundred years ago brave men stood for liberty against a cruel empire. They could not fail for  the diaspora came to help them. Greek philosophy, science, religion had done so much to create the world that when she needed us, we came. Children born in other lands returned and paid the debt they owed. Hellenic culture sent out ideas that created Athens, Alexandria, Antioch, Aksum-  classical culture fused with vibrant Christian Orthodoxy that made a commonwealth of nations (Romania,... Read more

Hellas: With No Monument to Preserve Her Except that of the Heart

Last updated on: March 24, 2021 at 9:32 pm   By John Mark N. Reynolds

Rootless, lost, unattached, homeless: these feelings overwhelm those who forget the mothers and fathers that brought them to this place and time. We have been born, children of science, philosophy, and Christian theology, at the end of a long line of good mothers and fathers. Duty demands, morality necessitates, that we honor those who gave us good gifts. Who are the ancestors of the civilized? They are from many nations, tribes, and peoples, yet some synthesized, integrated, and endured more... Read more

The Dove, the Puppy, Athena, and the Mouse

Last updated on: March 28, 2021 at 8:26 pm   By John Mark N. Reynolds

Spring has sprung. In Houston that means critters, sheep gamboling at The College, chickens laying eggs at The School, and the hawks and feral cats lurking nearby. The mosquitos  have not yet reached their full gigantic size- still unable to carry a gator to their bayou home. This is a time for the younglings explore. One morning I came out the front door to find a dove nesting in our window box bringing two eggs to maturity. She looks like... Read more

Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos (A Guest Post By His Grace Bishop Thomas)

Last updated on: March 22, 2021 at 12:39 pm   By John Mark N. Reynolds

Wise words are needed, a wise example more so, and Mary, the Mother of God, provides wisdom for the faithful by her words and life. On this Feast day comes some insights into the wisdom in a  guest message from His Grace Bishop Thomas.* I greet you with special joy on this feast – the advent of our salvation, our freedom from imprisonment (Psalm 141), and the dawning of the Good News. The thrice-holy God has provided us this radiant... Read more

The Hectorate and the Beloved Community

Last updated on: March 21, 2021 at 8:26 am   By John Mark N. Reynolds

The Hectorate, the league of hectors, is acid on the soul of the Church. These are the public intellectuals that rarely attack the “other team.” Once you seem them, you do not want to be them, and you understand much of what happens. Arguments are not really made, instead some correlation is thrown out and taken to be causation. What makes a Hector? What if you are above average? Do you have a few credentials? What if you have seen... Read more

The Ball is Not a Chew Toy, On the Nature of Things (A Nessie the Wonder Dog Story)

Last updated on: March 21, 2021 at 9:33 am   By John Mark N. Reynolds

Nessie has triumphed over her last ball at the cost of her favorite game. To fetch the ball is the highpoint of the day for Nessie the Wonder Dog. She has no balls now, because over the last three days, she has used her balls as chew toys. She has numerous bones, chew toys, soft toys, but every so often Nessie decides to send the ball to the place where balls go when they are reduced to rubble: our trash can,... Read more

What in the world? The Glories of Really Hard Stuff (A Nessie the Wonder Dog Story)

Last updated on: March 20, 2021 at 12:29 am   By John Mark N. Reynolds

Sometimes like Nessie, I just listen in wonder. May I never only listen to ideas I know, things I understand fully, or worst of all have to be the center of the conversation!  When our sage friend Professor Robert Thomas Llizo comes, Nessie (The Wonder Dog), often sits on the floor listening to adventures in academia. Translator, teacher, Llizo is the sort you call in summer only to discover he is in Tunisia, at a Russian Imperial Ball, or translating exorcism... Read more

Solidarity . . . Best I Can

Last updated on: March 19, 2021 at 10:37 am   By John Mark N. Reynolds

Racism is evil. Objectifying women is wrong, a sin that is a particular application of the evils of misogyny. Human trafficking is a great wrong, as is blaming the victims of that terrible trade. The ancient and abominable lie of Adam that the woman caused the man to sin has not gained any virtue over the millennia. These are ancient evils and present problems. Solidarity is a necessity with my friends in the Asian American community against hate and racism.... Read more

Many Levels, Greater Joy

Last updated on: March 18, 2021 at 12:10 pm   By John Mark N. Reynolds

Hope came with a trumpet. Music filled the campus and an amazing thing happened. The instrumentalists began to appear from all over campus: from junior high through our college students they began to play. The nursery began to dance, the sun was shining, and a campus that had been under siege from a pandemic and an ice storm looked up. The old oak trees were strong and while battered building four remained closed, repairs were underway. We need not deny all the... Read more

Searching for Truth: On Pragmatics, Babies and Bathwater

Last updated on: March 18, 2021 at 12:13 pm   By John Mark N. Reynolds

A good life is more than pragmatic, but does take into account what works. If we are just pragmatic, we may lose the truth. Sometimes ideas seem to work, but the “seeming” is deceptive or based on too limited a sample! God’s opinion surely counts as does His judgment for eternity. We all agree we should be wise, but being wise is hard.  Wisdom is an excellent Beloved, even if none of us will see her clearly until Paradise. We follow in her... Read more
