Resurrection Sermon for an Earth-kin Congregation

Last updated on: March 24, 2018 at 6:28 am   By Leah D. Schade

This Resurrection sermon, originally preached at R.B. Winter State Park in Pennsylvania, in the outdoor Whispering Pines amphitheater, draws from Colossians 1:15-20 and John 20:1-18. Introduction St. Francis of Assisi preached to the flowers. He preached to cornfields, stones, forests, earth, air and wind. He considered them and all God’s creatures to be his brothers and sisters. St. Francis thought of them as his fellow worshipers of God and exhorted them to praise their Creator. I think it is high time... Read more

More than Eco-Palms: Ecojustice and Palm Sunday

Last updated on: March 22, 2018 at 6:39 pm   By Leah D. Schade

On Palm Sunday, thousands of churches will use sustainably-harvested palms in their worship services marking the beginning of Holy Week. But let’s not end there.  The sermon, too, can incorporate ecojustice themes that highlight the connection between Jesus’ crucifixion and the eco-crucifixion happening today. Read more

What Surprised Me About the #NationalWalkoutDay at My Daughter’s School

Last updated on: March 17, 2018 at 11:26 am   By Leah D. Schade

We came to my daughter's school to support the #NationalWalkoutDay. We witnessed great student leadership and activism. But we also came face to face with the canker of white male rage that exists in my daughter’s school. Read more

No, Mr. Pruitt, Fossil Fuels Are Not God’s ‘Blessing’ for Humanity

Last updated on: March 12, 2018 at 11:53 pm   By Leah D. Schade

No, Mr. Pruitt, fossil fuels are not a "blessing" from God. Why would such a “blessing” require the large-scale industrialization of what was once beautiful forests, farms, meadows, and communities?  Any “resource” that results in poisoning water, air and land while destroying human health is no blessing. It is, in fact, the curse of humanity’s arrogance. Read more

When We Make Guns the King: A Warning about Arming Teachers

Last updated on: March 1, 2018 at 2:55 pm   By Leah D. Schade

Those calling for the arming of teachers – or any action that will put more guns into the equation – are like the people in 1 Samuel crying out for something, anything, that they think will save them. We need to heed the warning they received. Read more

It’s Time to Repeal and Replace the 2nd Amendment

Last updated on: March 27, 2018 at 11:16 am   By Leah D. Schade

I’m done supporting the 2nd Amendment.  The Founding Fathers would never have wanted the kind of carnage our nation has endured and continues to inflict upon children, men, and women. You had your chance to show that you could handle this right with equal responsibility.  Instead, you have used it to create an industry that kills children and adults by the hundreds of thousands, even topping one million deaths.  As Neil deGrasse Tyson recently tweeted: Your right to own a... Read more
