On December 11, 2022, I was invited to offer the intercessory prayers for Iglesia Luterana Santa Maria Peregrina, in Stockton, Calif. This was part of the Feast Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe — one year after a previous ELCA bishop removed their pastor, Rev. Nelson Rabell Gonzalez, and disrupted the church service.

Rev. Nelson Rabell and Rev. Dr. Leah Schade, Iglesia Luterana Santa Maria Peregrina, Dec. 11, 2022.

One thing that has become important to me during this whole saga is trying to learn the language of this community.  So with the help of Rev. Nelson and the Latino bishops who coached me in the translation and pronunciation, I led the prayers in Spanish.

You can watch the whole service here.  The prayers begin at minute mark 1:13:30.  You can read about the service here.

Prayers of Intercession for Iglesia Luterana Santa María Peregrina, in English

God of our ancestors, we praise you for your faithfulness to those in our history who have struggled for justice and whose stories inspire us to practice hope in the face of despair.

Prayer based on the first reading, Genesis 50:15-21 (Joseph forgives his brothers, “What you intended for harm, God intended for good.”)

For our brother Joseph who was attacked and sold into slavery by his own kin, who suffered from false accusations, and who languished in prison.  May his courage, integrity, vision, and ability to forgive model for us a way to move forward.

God of reconciliation (hear our prayer).

Prayer based on the Gospel reading, Luke 1:39-56 (Mary’s Magnificat)

For Mary, our mother in faith, who was filled with your grace and whose song of justice causes the proud to tremble, the enthroned to quake, and the rich to shudder as they realize your power on behalf of the lowly and oppressed.  May her Spirit-inspired song fill our lungs, our voices, and the sanctuary of your earth with the proclamation of restoration.

Spirit of resistance (hear our prayer).

Prayer inspired by Mary’s appearance to Juan Diego

For our brother Juan Diego who stood at that holy place of Tepeyac Hill and received the Blessed Virgin’s message that he and his Aztec people were seen, their language heard, their land made sacred, and their leadership validated.  For all of those who are colonized, all who walk through desolate and dangerous places searching for safety, and all who have been dismissed and disrespected by the church, may the story of those flowers blooming in the desert sustain and strengthen them to fight for their dignity, identity, and liberation.

God of reparations (hear our prayer).

Prayer inspired by Martin Luther’s courage against an abusive church

For our brother, Martin Luther, who persisted in his struggle against a religious power structure that choked the faith of the people and cared more about its own privilege and wealth than about the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Reform the church again today, Holy Christ.  Deconstruct our whiteness, empty us of our greed, turn us away from the idolatry of corporate power, and redirect our hearts, minds, and actions toward repentance and restoration.

Jesus our savior (hear our prayer).

Prayer of Thanksgiving and Intercession for Iglesia Luterana Santa María Peregrina

We give you thanks, Holy God, for the congregation of Iglesia Luterana Santa María Peregrina.  For their persistence like the widow against the unjust judge.  For their courage like Daniel in the lion’s den.  For their patience like the Israelites in exile.  We pray for their healing, their strength, and their wisdom as they continue in their pilgrimage accompanied by the Blessed Mother Mary.

God in your mercy (hear our prayer).

Prayer for those who have done harm to the community

We pray for those who have lied, that they may be held accountable. For those who bore false witness, that they may make amends.  For those who have kept silence out of fear, that they may know courage. For those who perpetrated or enabled harm, that they may repent.

Spirit in your mercy (hear our prayer).

Prayer for Rev. Nelson, his family, and congregation

We pray for our brother, Rev. Nelson Rabell Gonzalez, his wife, Fabiola, and their children, Hiram and Sofia. Continue to surround them with supportive family, friends, and colleagues who will accompany them in their time of recovery.  Bring justice, restoration, and reparations to them and their congregation.  Bless them with renewed energy for ministry, strengthen their bonds as a family, and shine your light of love into their lives.

Holy Jesus in your mercy (hear our prayer).

For all for whom we have prayed, and for those with no one to name them, we entrust them to your grace, mercy, and power.  In the name of the Triune God we pray. Amen.

Amen.
