Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

When it came to Medina, Muhammad expelled one tribe of Jews. The second he took their stuff. A third tribe of Jews he single-handedly beheaded all the men and any boy who had reached puberty, then he took the women and children and sold them into slavery.
Then there is plain ugly stuff, Muhammad was 49-years-old when he married Aisha who was just 6-years-old. He had to convince the girl’s father to let him marry her because Muhammad claimed this was something God wanted them to do. He did not consummate that relationship until she was of the age of nine, however. But still – 52 years old consummating a relationship with a 9-year-old girl! Because of that, today all around the world, girls at an early age are forced into marriage that their bodies simply are not ready for. And many girls around the world are dying because they’re giving birth before they’ve even completed puberty.
Because their parents said if Muhammad did it, it’s okay for us to do it.
If you want to read a book about this, there is girl who wrote a book called I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced you can buy it off Amazon. it’s a story about how she escaped from her domineering violent husband as a 10-year-old. All that happen because Muhammad set the example. Don’t forget he was the exemplar.

This is what got me, when I was a Muslim I explained that all away but this I could not. The Qur’an declare that it is appropriate to have sexual intercourse with female captives.
One place Surah 23:1-6
“The believers must (eventually) win through – those who humble themselves in their prayers; who avoid vain talk; who are active in deeds of charity; who abstain from sex except whit those join to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hand possess – for (in their case) they are free from blame.”
We who are they?
“Abu- said al-Khudri reposted that at the Battle of Hunain, Allah’s messenger sent nay army o Autas and encountered the enemy and fought with them. Having overcome them and taken them captives, the companions of Alla’s messenger seemed to refrain from having intercourse with captive women because of their husbands being polytheists. Then Allah, most high, sent down regarding that: “And women already married, except those who your right hands possess.”
Sahih al-Muslim 2.3432
Meaning they have just captured women on the battlefield and the men wanted to have intercourse with them right away. But it tells us that their husbands were still alive. And Muhammad allowed them to have intercourse with these women on the battlefield and later allowed them to be sold to slavery. Some of them were pregnant and sold into slavery, and this is allowed by the Qur’an?
So to me, this was absolutely unconscionable. Even as a Muslim, I looked at this and thought there has got to be a way around this. When I was going to from mosque to mosque this was the biggest one to me. How is it that God would allow this? And never did I get a satisfactory response.
So the conclusion is:
1. The sources for the historical Muhammad are of dubious reliability.
2. If they are trusted, then the picture of Muhammad is not flattering.
3. If they are not trusted, then there is no reason to accept him as a prophet.
If a Muslim says Muhammad a prophet of God, you should ask, “How do you know that?” They’ll respond, “Well… look at how wonderful he was.” Then you can say, “The sources also say this, and that’s problem. And if you’re not going to trust the sources, you have nothing to go off of to say he was a prophet of God.”
So that’s Muhammad. Now we’re going to talk about the Qur’an. The first thing I want to mention when you think about the Bible you think about the New Testament. You have the 27 books of the New Testament. The Gospels were written in a society where people knew how to read and things were written constantly as far as records. But in Islam, the Qur’an was being composed, but they did not have a developed Arabic script. There was no book in Arabic before the Qur’an.
If you compare the early/original text from the Qur’an to the modern Qur’an, they look nothing alike. Most Muslims today can’t even read it, because there are a lot of things missing from it. A lot of vowels and a lot of breathing marks are missing. Today’s Muslims don’t know how to accurately pronounce the early writings. The reason is because people at that time had not developed an Arabic script to the point that it could carry the weight of the Arabic prose. How could the Qur’an be composed when they didn’t even have writing? The answer is this: it was composed orally. Remember, Muhammad didn’t know how to read or write, so he dictated the Qur’an to his scribes. The scribes wrote notes and used them as memory aids. The Quranic text was merely the oral notes -the memory aids that were used to remind people of Muhammad’s words.
